New to the Garage Journal Forum. Came across this site on TractorByNet. I am building out ranch weekend getaway man cave. The land I am restoring to native grass land about 80 miles west of Houston, TX. To date I have build my barn (bedroom, bathroom and outdoor kitchen) and now am looking all over for items I may need one day to work on farm equipment etc.

Was out at an estate sale and came across a new in box never used Wilton 8" vise. It's a beast and weighs about 75 lbs. I have been searching here and the internet for how I would like to mount this thing. My 4" vise in on my bench but this one I would like to be mounted mobile. I have seen many metal stands with wheels up-turned so once you tilt it you and roll it to where it is needed. Great idea but they have all been made out of steel. I would like to keep it simple at first as I am not a welder at this time nor do I have the steel to build it. In the meantime I would like to make something out of wood.

I have been thinking about taking 2x6's and start out at like a 2.5' square base and then build up like a pyramid to about a 10" square top to mount the vise.

In the end the stand would be near solid wood.

1) What do you all think about a stand like this?
2) How Tall should I make it?
3) Thinking about leaving a fork lift slot one 2x6 up so I can use my forks to pick it up and move if need be in addition to finding a way to mount "inverted" wheels for a tilt and move. Your thoughts?
4) Would a vise this large do well on a hitch receiver type mount? When I start welding I am thinking about trying to build this into the stand somehow. Seen several online but mostly on smaller vises.

Your insight is much appreciated.

Thank you,

in my limited use of vises on stands, if your vise weights 75lbs, the base better weigh at least 2-3 times that to make the vise usable. That pretty much rules out a wood stand. How about a picture of the vise- I would think a Wilton with 8" wide jaws would weigh a lot more than 75lbs, unless its one of those China jobs.

What will be the main use for the new vise? If just holding pipe to cut or what not you may be able to go with a wooden base. If you plan on putting any real torque to anything gonna have to go either really heavy or really wide. Vise bolted to a fixed work bench are just that "fixed" in place. When ya go mobile and intend to do any say bending a piece of metal or tube, its all a big lever and the mechanical advantage of the "levering" will just over power the base. I personally dont like mobile vises or anvils, but they have a purpose sometimes. Better for straight up and down letting gravity do its thing. I dont know if I put into words the best way to describe what Im talking about. But hopefully its something to consider.

I would go with a steel bench for a vise that size. It could be on locking casters . There is a guy in the Woodlands that has all kinds of steel tables at pretty good prices

This will get you to him... he has a lot of stuff not listed...give him a call and tell him what you’re looking for...he gets new stuff all the time... he had some nice stainless top 1/2 inch tables for about 300 dollars recently

I made a frame out of 2x6 and plywood around the top half for strength. this was supposed to be temporarily till I get around to making a metal one, that was 2 years ago. I kinda like it now. BCD I'II try and post a pic.

Yeah, that has definitely been my experience- I built a stand for a smaller vise, probably 6" and maybe 50#, with a 4x4 pressure-treated frame with a half-dozen or so big brake discs loaded up in the bottom, casters low on one side to wheel it when tipped... and for most projects I end up having to steady the vise with one hand to keep it from rocking. Forget using it to bend anything substantial.

With a 75# vise it'd be even more top-heavy unless you REALLY load the base up, and now you're muscling around 200+ pounds that mostly wants to just fall over on your foot... :willy_nil

Maybe mount the 8" to your bench and build a receiver mount for the 4" for mobile projects, unless there are particular jobs you need a big mobile vise for?
