Layout lines on vapor barrier

I think my hydronic tubing and rebar might go faster if I can put at least some layout lines on the stegowrap vapor barrier. Usually I use inverted rattle can marking paint to do layout. Will that damage the stego plastic? Is there a better way to mark that stuff?

I can't say that I definitively know the answer to your question but the stuff is pretty rugged and I can't imagine spray paint would bother it. It's commonly done but that's not to say it's right or doesn't somehow degrade the membrane. I don't think I'd worry about it.

I got a kick out of Eric's pic. It looks like they taped all the seams and then drove rebar through it to establish their grade. "Don't worry Mr. Inspector, we'll tape them up before the pour" You guys ever heard of a laser?

thanks

When I got the first reply I found and used the inquiry email at stego. They responded quickly and agreed with LLWillys:

Spray paints of various kinds have been applied to Stego Wrap for decades and we are unaware of any issue with the performance of the wrap as a result. Although some spray paint ingredients have potential to generally affect plastics (e.g. acetone, BTEX and other hydrocarbon solvents, etc.), including polyethylene, we have not tested Stego Wrap in contact with spray paints and cannot quantify the effect they may have. That being said, the propellants often used for spray paints are usually very volatile and therefore typically flash off quickly. The residual paint components are usually applied very thinly and represent small amounts in comparison to the mass of the wrap. “

Why can you not use the grid pattern of the welded wire mesh for the ‘lay out lines’?

I mostly need the marking for the hydronic pex tubing install to make sure I don’t have pex interfering with rebar chairs that haven’t been set yet. If hydronic tubing was on top of steel I probably wouldn’t need much in the way of layout.

Did you put the vapor barrier on top of the insulation?

I used a sharpie to mark layout lines on the foam board. I'm guessing that would also work on the plastic.
