honestly i really like it mr mx .. get some controls on it, and maybe double up on the relief valve .. also i'd insulate the hell out of the water jacket, you need to keep heat in there to get it to run clean, creosote is a pain in the ***, and maybe add a heat dump

Thanks! I was thinking I might need to put some insulation on the extra water tank but I didn't think about the water jacket on the heater itself. I haven't had any problems with creosote since I repaired it. I think the stack temps have been high enough when I do a good burn to keep it down. The past couple days though I have only had to really fire it hard for 20 minutes or so in the morning to get it going and in the evening when I fill it for the night. The rest of the time it has just been idling and even at that it has remained fairly clean. I check it every week and so far all I have had to do is shoot some compressed air in to the tubes from the top chamber and what's in there drops back down into the firebox and burns again.

I thought about insulating it though but just didn't know how to go about doing it. I think my plan was that if it worked well enough I could box it in with some thin plate medal with some mineral wool inside but I didn't want to go through the trouble before I found out what it could do.

Do you mean add another pressure valve? If so where should I place it.I had thought about drilling and tapping a hole right in the top close to the exit but when I found that 4 way I decided to put it there. I do have a couple 3/4" threaded fittings at about the middle of the tank that I could use if that would be okay. Right now I have my pressure gauge in one and my fill valve in the other but I could double up on those two if needed.

lol .. it's an extra circuit you plumb to deal with those times when the fire is roaring and the floor is satisfied .. a gas boiler can shut off and stop making heat just before the floor is satisfied with the proper smart controls, you obviously don't have near that level of control with a wood fired boiler .. you can either just pipe it outside where it will be wasted or dump it into a storage device and pick it up again later .. a storage device can be something as simple as an insulted wood frame box lined with plastic sheet .. a heat dump where you just scrub off heat is controlled by a three way valve that operates like a thermostat in a car engine .. obviously if you're picking up heat from a storage device you need some kind of logic controller like a tekmar 155 maybe

as far as relief valve placement goes i would just put it beside the other one .. has your insurance guy seen it yet ?? im guessing no

OH!! Now I see what you mean now. I'll see about adding a second valve. I think I have another one laying around here somewhere.

Insurance company????? Hell.....they don't even know about the building yet. I did this all pretty much under the table. The county did catch on after a couple years though. They do fly overs and take pictures ever few years to see what people have been up to and I guess my camo job didn't work very well so one day I got a knock on the door from the county tax man wanting to know what the deal was with the building in the big picture he was pointing at. I knew I was busted and there was no need in trying to argue with him about it so I turned on the charm and told him it was only a pole barn for storage that got out of hand and turned into a work shop/storage type a deal. He was pretty cool about it and asked me what size it was. I told him it started out being 32X40 but I had already added a couple of additions. He said do you mind if I take some measurements just for the records? What could I say? I said well sure.....can I hold the tape measure for you? He said no I can take care of it myself, thanks for your cooperation.

When he went down to the building all he did was look and scratch his head. He then stepped off the distance in front of the building and didn't even look in the back. He was also careful about not looking at finished floor, the lighting and plumbing that was stubbed out of the front of the building. When I got my next assessment I saw where he had wrote it up as a outbuilding- shed detached of 1280 sq ft.

If I ever finish this thing I'll get all that straight but for now I'm laying low.

i get a weird feeling about posting stuff like that in a public forum .. fingers crossed your county tax assessor isn't a member here sir

also, i wonder if they didnt't spend the money flying over folk's homes they probably wouldn't need to wring so much tax money out of our pockets .. i got no love for government

Yeah I know what ya mean, no sense kicking sand in their face. I guess that's why I didn't give the guy a hard time when he came by and busted me. He had to see that the building was pretty much finished out inside.....I mean he walked right by my 14' wide door that was wide open when he stepped off the front wall width. Also he pulled his truck right up to the big door and had to be looking straight into the building. I guess being in agriculture zoning he cut me some slack and of-course me not giving him a hard time had something to do with it also.

He did tell me a few stories of people that were not so forthcoming and all he said was those people would not be too happy when the got their new assessment.
