County told me I need a permit for everything. In this case its probably has to be documented for insurance reasons.

I believe the real reason that you are supposed to have a permit for everything, is for tax purposes.

Think about it. Hmmm.

Yeah. Hmm.

Exactly. My angel of a wife (Sherri) and I extended the back of our house to make room for a pool table in the play room a couple years ago.

Six months later the county assessor sends out two guys with tape measures to check out the addition. Up go the property taxes.

Only thing im getting a permit for is my new garage and drive way. After that I'm doing a patio and finishing my basement. Gonna make more parking and other various projects including 2 lifts in the garage. All permits are for is so they can raise your taxes. They say its for your safety but the main reason for them is so they can keep tabs on you without having to physically watch you and raise your taxes every time you improve your property. I got a permit for my pellet stove it was cheap anyway but i got it incase for some ungodly reason it catches fire and burns my house to the ground. The insurance company cant get out of replacing my house because it was an unlawfully installed stove. I had the township inspect it and had a stove guy come out and inspect it as well so I'm covered.

Amazing to see all the same stories across the country. We all realize permits are another tax to citizens and nothing else.
Along the same lines, my brother-in-laws house burnt down some years back and he asked me to frame the steps from first floor into his basement on his new house. He then asked me about framing out his basement, I said do it while you have me here already. The township somehow caught wind of this and told him he needed a permit to frame the basement. He had a permit to construct the house already and he needs another separate permit to frame the basement?!? WHAT A SCAM !

Commerical use and insurance coverage.
If it was installed without a permit the insurance wouldn't cover his employee liability.

I can see a permit for outside of the house, but if you want to add a wall, or finish off a basement, I feel it's no ones damn business.

I understand inspections, but no the permits. When I started my garage, I read through the paperwork and as long as the structure was more than 25' from the house, I didn't need a permit. While the footers were being dug, I had to run to Lowes. When I got back, there was a guy standing there with a clipboard. He ask me where my permit was. I told him that I'm more than 25' away, so I didn't need a building permit. He tells me that I am correct on that, but I need a "Township Permit". Well WTF!!!! Then he tells me he just happens to have all the proper paperwork in his truck. Well go figure. He fills out a few things, has me sign it, and I'm out $140.

About a month later, I'm finishing up the garage, and decide i need a driveway to the garage. A County Engineer truck pulls up. Where's your permit. I show it to him that it is taped in the window. He then tells me that what I have is a Township Permit. Soooo :dunno: Then he ask....where's your driveway permit? What the hell? I needed a permit to put a driveway in because I had to put a culvert pipe under the drive.

Why can't people tell you all of this **** up front. When I went to get a building permit and show the County Engineering office my plans and they tell me I don't need a building permit, why the hell didn't they tell me that I needed a Township permit and a driveway permit. Bastages!!!!

They don't magically come out to all of the sudden inspect and ask for permits if you didn't file any. Nope, thank one of your Neighbors if it happens that way. Where I live you need a permit for everything. I have a cabin in rural pa. Just the cabin itself needed permits nothing else

Down here, if you own over three acres, you don't need a permit for ANYTHING...........

Garage, shop, house no Building Dept. no Inspectors, nothing...

Just sayin'

Seems to me that if your property taxes are based on your property value and if you improve the value of your property then by mathematical definition, your taxes should go up.

Anything less would be fraud/theft from the community, which is to say your neighbors.

Around here they do. I'm on a road that is a shortcut between the main State route. Plus the Township garage is just 2 miles from me. Both the county and Township drive past my house on an average of 2 or 3 times a day, each. That's how I got nailed for not having permits.

Permits aren't always a bad thing. When you see crappy work that doesn't meet any code and a permit has been pulled, it generally gets caught when inspection time rolls around. If you had no construction knowledge and were having your kitchen remodeled to the tune of 30 grand, you might want someone that knows more than you inspecting the work.

They come around my area periodically to see if anything has been added on people's property. That way they can raise our taxes. I can see getting a permit for a lift. That could fall on someone and could cause an injury or even a death. So, it is probably a good idea to get one for a lift.

Yes, but when your property values go down the city never seems to lower the taxes. Last time we had our house appraised for a loan, the value came in $100+k less than what the township appraiser said it was worth. We took our appraisal to the township, and they only lowered it some.

I've been saying it for years that there should be a law stating that a town must buy any house on demand from the owner for 3/4 of it's assessed value. If the town really thinks the house is worth their ridiculously high assessment, they could turn around and sell it quickly for say 90% value and make a healthy profit.

Just think of all the money the town could make.:lol_hitti
