I've been kinda wanting a Leatherman for awhile. I don't know why but the boy scout in me likes to have a backup when things go bad. I was looking at the Wave, Surge, Skeletool? and just noticed this MUT model in the latest Matco flyer.
I looked it up and it looks like it's mostly for military as it has many weapons tools mainly for M16/AR15.
I really dig the look of it and the fact you can use the bottom of one side for a hammer and it has the bit holder. You can replace a bunch of the stuff it they break or get damaged and overall it just seems to be a good quality tool. I actually built an AR15 a couple years ago but I never got real into them. I prefer AK's myself but I'm wondering if this leatherman is just too specific for a civi to own. I don't need the punch or bronze carbon scraper but could use the torx driver and bit holder, hammer, etc..
Most of the leatherman's seem to have stuff I don't need anyway like a bottle opener. If the zombies come and I have an AR I guess the punch may be useful right?

my advice from personal use is stay away from the "Juice" models , poor design.
The bar that supports the tools snapped off on one i had , i took it back to replace it and a few months after using the new one the same bar snapped on them. Can't be bothered taking it back again as all the bar does is 'clip' the small flathead screwdriver in place but still i cannot recommend that model.

stay away from the skeletool as well. Well documented on the net how the pliers snap very easily.

I have a surge, and it is quite hefty and badass.

I don't think for everyday use that a Tactical model multi tool is the way to go. Matco and other places sell them because they look cool and it's new. I own just about every major multi tool made. The only one I really use is my Leatherman Wave. It's hands down the best Multi tool I own. Out of my Leathermans the Wave is my favorite. I keep one in each one of my vehicles and they get used often. Very solid and well built

In general here is my opinion of those multi-tools. If you carry it on you you'll use it a ton. If you don't, you'll forget about it and grab the correct tool from your toolbox.

I had a micra and until I lost it I used it every day. I tried the bigger ones but could never get used to having it hanging on my belt or in my pocket.

I have the Supertool 300.. love it.

I don't carry it everyday, but if i go on a trip for work, or vacation it goes with me.

I also carry a pocket knife daily.

I've been carrying a juice S2 for about 7 years now. I think I'm on my 3rd one now, because I lost one to airport security, and lost another somewhere else.

Use it all the time, have not broken anything. I only have two complaints: first, the blade doesn't seem to be as tough of steel as some of the others - requires sharpening pretty often, and second, I'd like locking blades - other than that it fits nicely in my pocket an I'm very happy.

Get a Victorinox Swiss Tool. The quality is amazing.

The MUT is specifically designed for M16/AR15 maintenance. If you want a LM, look into the Wave or Charge and order a separate bit kit or 1/4" insert bit adapter.

I was luck enough to buy a Schrade Multi-tool the other day at a local pawn shop. Gave them all of $1, plus tax. Haven't carried it yet, but it looks good and handy. For the price, I can't complain, even if it *****.

I've got a Gerber Legendary. My wife bought it for me right after it came out. I carry it all the time and use it a lot. The scissor broke and I sent Gerber an E-Mail. They asked me to ship it in and sent me a new one. No receipt, no further questions, just good service.

I agree with the earlier post. If you carry a multitool you'll use it a lot. If you have to reach for it you'll get something from the toolbox.

i disagree. I love mine and have used it quite hard. I'm sure a lot of the breakage instances were due to improper use. BUT, if it does break leatherman has a 30 year warranty iirc, just get it replaced fo free.

I know the MUT is for specialized for gun maintenance but I got one anyway. It holds 6 different bit sizes out of the box, has a hammer, replaceable wire cutters, carbon scraper (I can use this on cars) and a nice knife and saw blade. I like it, it's not for everyone but it's nice. I don't get using the punch for taking down AR's though. I just use a bullet tip.

I know it's a good tool but I wanted a leatherman because it's the original multi-tool and it's made in the USA. I have to support my fellow American's to the north. Everything else (although nice quality) just seems like a knock off to me.

I've had a Micra on my keychain for years, but I've only run into a few times where it actually came in handy for something. The Wave is more useful, but it stays in the truck unless I need it...

I'll agree here. I've been carrying a Leatherman on my belt everyday since 1999 (except at work, funerals, weddings and airports).

Once you start wearing one and always know that it's there, you wonder how you ever lived without it. It comes so naturally when I need a tool, even in the garage, my arm goes back for my multi-tool. I feel naked without it.

I had the first generation Wave when it first came out 10 years ago. Then the second gen where they beefed it up quite a bit.

Now I'm rocking a 25th Anniversary Charge and love it. Yeah, they've all had the same awesome saw and diamond-coated file.

Yeah, Les Stroud has a Wave, but Jamie Hyneman (Mythbusters) has a Charge!

I have a wave myself and I love.

I'm into AR15's though and I was thinking of getting a MUT.

I also own other firearms and it would be a great little multi tool to carry to the range or while out hunting.

I believe if you look closely at the "Bourne Supremacy" episode, you will notice that when he pulls the flaming magazine out of the toaster, he is using a Gerber MP600.

Full disclosure, I do work at Gerber, and will not hedge on the truth, as they do not see fit to hire me full time.

But the MP600 is the best I have seen anywhere in my travels. If you want "outboard" tools, meaning you don't have to open the pliers to access the components, avoid the Suspension as the locking mechanism is problematic with the open frame design. I suggest the Flik for sheer ease of use, or the Grappler, if you require "vise-grip like" function.

I'm getting myself into trouble here, but here goes. If you are just getting a multitool that you want to work at the range by all means get the MUT. It is a well designed tool, if just a teensy overly complicated. If you want a specific tool for an AR or M class rifle, I suggest a Gerber E-fect in combination with an Otis brand cleaning kit.

Like the man said earlier, the MUT is a fine tool, but always know what you need/want, before you buy. These thing are too expensive(as is the
AR) for guessing games.

i got a fuse for free. i carry it around and use it everyday. the fuse is one step up from the wave. the only difference is the fuse has a locking mechanism for all the tools. i would definitely recommend either the fuse or wave.

I bought a blast back in highschool that I still use, and bought my dad a Wave. He uses his every day at least once. Gotta love my leatherman.

Leatherman is one of my most used tools--- after work that is-- to open up a bottle of brew!!

Otherwise, for me, it is for domestic duties only.

Get a Victorinox Swiss Tool. The quality is amazing.

When handled a Swisstool about 6 years ago I had to have one. Much better design, and higher quality, than the Wave I was carrying at the time. Or any other multi tool I've ever handled. Mine is one of the large straight sided ones not the newer curved style.

One strange thing about it was the pouch they supplied with it was a ballistic nylon POS. The belt loop was already starting to wear thru' by the time I got around to making a custom leather one for it.

I had the first generation Wave when it first came out 10 years ago. Then the second gen where they beefed it up quite a bit.

My Wave probably was 1st gen. What did they revise with the 2nd gen? I stopped looking when I got my Swisstool.

+1 Love the Wave.

And I use it A LOT for fishing in salt water environment - has held up really well...

I am a huge fan of using the "correct tool for the job", so I think that outside of certain kinds of jobs, there are 2 basic good uses for multitools.

1. Just for the knife, pliers, bottle opener, and screwdrivers - I have a leatherman skeletool. 2 of them actually the original skeletool and the cx model. (lost my original so I replaced it then later found it). I think they are fantastic and do everything great. Small enough to carry clipped into your pocket as well.

2. A full on multitool to keep in something like a boat. A leatherman wave or something similar is what I'd get for these situations.

.

This is so true. I've had my Leatherman PST since 1992, and it's still going strong. (That was back when the PST was the ONLY Leatherman you could get!)

I've often thought of getting one of those new fancy models, but I don't care for the additional weight (if you want to put it in a pocket) although the Skeletool seems to bring that back down; and I also don't want to offend my handy pocket companion who might think he's getting replaced... Guess I'll keep going until he fails, but at this point, that doesn't seem like anytime soon!

I really like my Charge AL.

Better blade than the Wave, better looking, easier on your hand. Bought the kit with the screwdriver bit.

I like my skelatool, but I do have one major complaint.
The knife blade was awful on every single leatherman I've used.
They don't hold an edge at all.

I probably wouldn't buy another leatherman because of it.

I would look into Gerber or Victorinox if I were you.

I carry a regular Leatherman at work. I've used the thing many times while on calls or at the FD. It's provided great service since I got it atleast 15 years ago, or whenever marlboro offered them free with the miles.

Me, being a non-smoker, I have to thank the guys I worked with for giving me their miles. lol

I just lost my Skeletool CX today. I have no idea where it is, I was a little hungover this morning and I'm not sure if I brought it to work or not... I guess it could be in my fleet vehicle too. I usually attach the carabiner to the belt hook of my jeans so I have easy access to it at all times.

I bought my Skeletool because I got a Snap-On multitool for Christmas (one of those made-in-China deals from Costco). It saved my **** when I was in Cuba because I snapped the throttle cable on my moped when I was at least 10km from my resort. So I took apart the throttle with the screwdriver on the multitool and then I pulled on the throttle cable to get myself back to the resort (I must've been at least 10km away).

However, the quality of this Snap-On tool is very questionable. Rivets are breaking off of it, the bottle opener on the additional keychain accessory broke the first time I opened a cold Becks with it. Oh, and the phillips screwdriver isn't machined, it's molded and doesn't fit nicely into screws. Shame on you Snap-On for even letting a tool like this hit the market with your name on it...

So I bought a Leatherman Skeletool CX and... WOW
The quality is shocking, the knife blade (154CM stainless) is 100x better than my Snap-On one and I use it on a regular basis. Now if only I could find the damn thing.

I also have a Leatherman Charge TTi but I haven't really put it to good use yet. I loved the small size and simplicity of the Skeletool. The carabiner on the Skeletool is a definite bonus too. If I don't find mine by Monday I'm going to order another off eBay. Hell, I might even go back to work tomorrow to try to find it just to justify the purchase of another if I can't.
