So i had the meter moved on Wednesday. The first crew showed up at 8:15am direct bored the the gas line from across the street in the neighbors yard. Packed up and gone by 845am.
2nd crew showed up at 910am to set up the new line, cap the old and move the meter to the other side of the house. These guys sat in the truck for 45mins. Finally got started. Everything was moved by 2pm, Plumber showed up at 205pm and connected the new service, cut and cap the old entrance.

Throw in the cost of the plumber, the entire job cost me $3927.67

That was definitely not in the budget, so now no insulation in the new garage this year.

I voted to leave it and then I saw the pic. Move it. Somebodies gonna hit it more than once and you'll not only be paying to fix the bumper but also a plumber to repair the gas line damage.

Probably a good thing you had them move it. Our Gas supplier showed up here one day last summer unannounced and placed Pipe Bollards around an existing Gas Meter next to our building. The issue was we added a driveway, rather a area to park trailers next to the building which was not in the original plan. The Driveway had been in service since 1997 without incident.

I ask why and they said some new federal mandate came down and they have to do this everywhere. The Bollards would have reduced you driveway 1 more foot if they show up at your place.

Good move.

That's a big chunk of change out of your budget but don't let it stop you. Places like Menard's run sales and you can pick up mini-rolls of fiberglass R13 for $7-8. The regular price is ten bucks. You can pick up 1 or 2 here or there and it'll add up before you know it.

I spoke with early crew. Had them in for coffee to warm them up. It had to be our coldest day so far in Chicago area.
They told me that since Nicor (our gas company) was bought and sold 2x in the last year a lot has changed.
Long delays, stupid upper management and extreme charges.
I happened to know one guus cousin who also worked for has company.
If i tried to move it 2 years ago and he would have spoke with his supervisor they would have chalked it up to a training exercise and no charge.

Oh well. Grind out some OT and do a box at a time of the 620 spray foam.

You will be glad you moved it. My family has owned our Arkansas property since 1954. The gas meter was right up against the driveway. The meter was broken 7 times by various vehicles. The last time by a drunk running from the police that shot up our driveway hitting the meter and dragging it 100 feet into a neighbors yard. That does not include the occasions where it was just bumped and didn't break loose. Each time the gas company absolutely refused to allow us to move the meter. However, the State stepped in and made them move every meter that was in "danger" of being struck by a vehicle. Ours was moved a year ago. I would have gladly paid for it, if the company would have allowed it. Now it's moved and they eat the cost. It really took a burden off us.

Put in a couple bollards to protect the gas meter, it will be a lot cheaper than relocating it.

Bollards are required when a gas service is in a driveway or parking area and would have cut his usable driveway down to about 7'...

He should have moved the service around the corner of the house to the back. It would have been the least amount of work to relocate it. There is no reason the gas company couldn't have done it that way.
I'm amazed the AHJ even lets him have a driveway right up to the property line.

Nicor and Illinois are really effed up
My neighbor had his meter moved this summer, by NIPSCO, and it was $800

Out of curiosity, did you ever get an ACTUAL reason 'around the corner' was no good?

Is there a spec/code on 'E-meter to gas meter separation'?

And yes Illinois *****. I am well aware of that aspect of our criminal govt and lawmakers.

But its moved, money is spent, time to move on. I am applying at McDonalds for their late night shift to help make ends meet.

I would pay for the permits for a new service or an upgrade, have them shut it off and move it, turn it back on.

Or learn how to do a utility or service upgrade. I didn't end up doing this cause I wanted to be an electrician or a plumber, did it because it was a problem in my way.

All discussions are a moot point now.

Moving it was the best solution.....

While it may have only gained 18"....if you are trying to get something down the drive and it's 1" too wide to get past that meter....well.....18" is a bargain....

I'm guessing they wouldn't all it to be in the back around the corner because of the need to read it. My meter now has electronic reporting...so....it can be anywhere.

If it isn't moved it needs to be protected from being struck. Subtract the cost of concreted posts to protect the meter. This will be the true cost of moving the meter.

Probably. I'm still waiting for a comment to use a Snap On gas meter so the truck can replace it when it breaks.

Although, now that I think about it, since it is a meter, maybe we should recommend a Fluke.

Did you plan on this extra job before you started this project?
If a $4000 bill put you in dyer straights and you had to get another job to make ends meet, you really should have waited on this.

No i didnt plan on it. or at least not at that extent. Like others, I had assumed it could just move to the back corner.

I took the mcdonalds comment to be a light hearted attempt at humor.... the more important question is why the need to accuse the OP of not being financially stable? Make you feel better?

GJ is a much nicer place than many other forums- you find people making $300k hanging out with folks barely scraping by... all attracted by a desire to talk projects, tools and stuff.. Lets keep it like that.
