LED lighting arrangment suggestion

I have a 25' x 25' two car garage with a 9.5' ceiling. I have picked up 8 T8 fixtures and 16 samsung LED T8 bulbs.

Before I get cracking on installing them, I thought I would see if the GJ folks had recommendations for how to arrange these fixtures in my space to get the best illumination.

The garage is an attached 2 car, with 4 man doors and 2 car doors. Man door 1 leads to the backyard. Man door 2 leads to the living room. Man door 3 is at the bottom is a flight of stairs in the garage leading to my parts room in the basement. Man door 4 leads to the front porch.

The wall furthest away from the house is where I have my welding carts, two work benches and tool box. 2' wide welding cart, 6' steel bench, 6' tool box, 8' wood bench. I plan to put the lights over the bench on a separate circuit from the rest.

Only other thing to mention is there is a beam running the length of the ceiling (front to back) right in the middle. This beam drops down about 9", which could obstruct light if a fixture is placed too close to it.

Sketch and pics required, but fist impression is you'll need more fixtures and bulbs.
I will sketch up the garage layout this evening. I was afraid I was going to need more ..no biggie. Just want good efficient illumination.

I was having a hard time making the CAD application on my phone do what I wanted it to do, so I sketched up my garage the old fashioned way to scale.

That support beam running down the middle of the garage is 6" wide and 9" deep.

Is this sketch detailed enough to get an idea of the garage layout? The primary use of the garage is automotive work.

myanangel - The sketch is fine. You can either wait until I have time to lay it out or try doing it yourself.

For the “how many fixtures do I need” question: You can use Visual-3d and set the 30” workplane to 90fc.

To take it to the next level, install and learn Dialux evo. It’s serious software and it’s free.

Thank you for these links, very interesting stuff.
I took a look at both the photometric viewer and Dialux. Looks like I need about double the lights I have at the moment. I also played around with Dialux, but that is one serious program, which would take a significant amount of time to figure out how to use. I will continue to play around with it, but i dont expect I will figure it out anytime soon.

Thank you for looking at my setup, whenever you have time ...I am very appreciative.

If you do car work. putting the lights right over the car is sort of useless. Put them around the perimeter of where the car will be parked. More light will get in the windows and under the car that way.

(I have access to very high end CAD programs. For stuff like this, pencil and paper is hard to beat.)

You don't need all that light except for where you work. I know people say 1,000 lux, but you only need that over work benches. Most under car work I do I need a trouble light anyway.

Sorta like the attachment (sorry, quick and dirty and crude). Personally, I'd grab two more and put them near the air compressor and one more between the garage doors if there is space with the doors up. Maybe a 3rd one by the shelves.

I think I figured out to use the Dialux application. I modeled my garage and then started arranging lights based off of the above recommendation and info found in Platonic's best light fixture thread.

I couldn't find my samsung bulbs in their inventory, so I added the specs manually (3800mn, 4000k, 36w)= 2 Bulbs

I added surface calculations on top of both benches, parts cleaner and the floor.
The benchse have an average of about 90 foot candles, the parts cleaner about 80, and the floor 75.

Does this look like a good arrangement or is it overkill?

I created an IES file that simulates 2 LED 2160 lumen lamps here (linked).
It's not actually a "zip" file, just delete the ".zip" and it's ready to use.

I updated my model using your IES file, and slightly rearranged the fixtures.
This is what I have come up with. Does this look like a good plan to move forward with?

Floor Surface:
67.2 FC - Average (The majority of the area surrounding the vehicle is 75FC)
0.0 FC - Min
105 FC - Max

Metal workbench:
90.6 FC - Average
69.7 FC - Min
104 FC - Max

Wood workbench:
88.1 FC - Average
63.0 FC - Min
105 FC - Max

Parts Cleaner:
86.0 FC - Average
64.2 FC - Min
102 FC - Max

Looks good to me. Well done.
Wonderful, thank you for the guidance...and teaching me how to fish.

The dialux application seemed daunting at first, but with a little trial & error it started to all make sense. I am sure I don't fully grasp all the various calculation angles etc. But the basics I understand.

I will post up pics once all installed.

Cheers,
Morgan

Start by making a hand sketch with all your measurements, then use the construction section of dialux to build your model. It takes some trial and error to figure out the application, but step 1 is building your model.

I am attempting to figure out my lighting needs as well on a new construction. I downloaded the Dialux but not having much success figuring out how to compute my required lighting needs...

Could someone offer a vector?

Keep playing with the construction section of the application, it's just a matter of placing rectangles and cylinders appropriately. Once you have your space modeled then worry about the lighting (luminaries)
