Led recessed lighting spacing

We are putting led recessed lighting in a living room. The room is only 20'x12'. Trying to figure out the spacing of the lights in the ceiling. How far away from the wall should they be and how far apart should each light be from each other? I'm thinking of putting six 6" lights in the ceiling.
Thanks
Todd

I did that project once. I think I spaced them about 30" off the walls. I energized one and held it up to the ceiling and looked at the spread of the light. Look at the back wall and see the light pattern on the wall. Worked out great.

6 lights in a 12 x 20 room is just ambient lighting. If that's what you want I think that's the minimum. I do like them near enough to a wall that you can use eyeball trim and aim it at the wall for paintings or anything, really. What I like about eyeballs and recessed lighting in general is not seeing a glare in my eyes when I walk into the room. I'd rather see first what is in the room rather than be drawn to the lights.

If it was me, I think I'd go at least 8 fixtures. You can do it symmetrically or you can avoid some areas. Not seeing the room and how it's furnished makes all comments very generalized.

The lights sold today are terrific. Select your lighting temperature for warm or cool and dim or brighten as the room use changes from cleaning to relaxing.

I agree with Zeke. And definitely wire in a dimmer. But I’m gonna say that in a living room you probably won’t like all the light coming straight down from the ceiling. I suggest some table or floor lamps as well.

Dimmer is definitely needed. And keep glare off the TV screen. Don’t put a light in front of it.

IMHO flat lights on the ceiling are best for use while cleaning your floors. I have many in my ceilings. Actually have them in almost every room. If I’m not cleaning floors the flat lights are dimmed fully or off.

But I use sconces and eyeball lights pointed at artwork on the walls too. Much more pleasant in the room.

In my kitchen which is 20' x 15' or so, I went with five LED 6", five LED 4" bullseye swivel and two pendant lights over the island. Plus LED under cabinet lights. All on dimmers. I used the KASA dimmers available on Amazon which are hooked up to the internet via my router and I can change them remotely via iPhone or I can ask Alexa to do it in the house. My recessed lights were Halo color selectables (all white 2700K - 5000 - I have them currently set at 3000K) Those Halo's are very nice lights and very easy to install. I think it is best to go heavy on the recessed lighting and then dim if you want. There are on-line tools available to help you determine the number of fixtures & spacing like this one.....
