The right hand pedal on a bicycle is left hand threaded so it doesn't unscrew it self while you're peddling.

The left hand gauge wheels on Kinze planters. At least our older Kinze 3500. Guess they thought they may loosen up while going through the field.

We don’t have that problem on our JD 1990 air drill though. The gauge wheels are on the left and they have right hand threads.

It's actually the left side pedal that is left hand threaded...if either left or right pedal isn't installed tightly, the pedaling motion will cause them to unthread.

Draincock on radiator

Now that's just plain evil...

As noted by several others, one end of any link rod arrangement is left-hand threads, so it always takes a few extra seconds of ponderment to adjust or reassemble these.

I never understood the logic behind why some old vehicles had left-handed wheel stud threads. There's no rotational force that could unscrew them (if they do loosen, it's from stretching and vibration, and the thread direction is irrelevant).

The only thing I could think of is that perhaps they were trying to make things easier for a very specific type of ***** -- the kind of goober who will place a lug wrench on a nut and then yank the same direction even if he's on the other side of the car. Perhaps some long-dead engineer or executive was just this sort of *****, so millions of others had to suffer.

I remember seeing kits with new studs and nuts to convert the left-hand threaded side of your vehicle to right-hand threads.

All 60s (70s?) Chrysler products. Not sure when they changed.

My guess is 1965.....when they also ditched those stupid tapered rear axles.

I had a 1966 Sport Fury and pretty sure it did not have tapered axles.

Water pump puller for early Saab 900's, 79-84(?),
also the pump was on top of the block so when it failed coolant has a straight shot to the oil,

Radiator cap on 17 D-max...the propellerheads out did themselves on that one...the question is "Why?"

I'd say you got to be kidding, but I know better. That said, that's ********. The engineer that thought that was a good idea and the manager that approved the design both should have been terminated.

I remember a Pontiac with reverse threads on the left side. I didn't know it was all of GM at one time.

I was wrenching a lot in the 60s. The only GM products I remember having LH lugs were some Pontiacs and Buicks. Never encountered a Chevy, olds or Cad with them.

First thing I did when I got my 56 Dodge 1/2T was to replace the bolts with studs, all RH. Hated the LH and bolts both.

Vises and other "centering" devices where both jaws have to move in opposite direction closing or opening. Shaft will have LH threads on one end, RH on opposite end.

LH discharge lawn tractor decks have LH threads on the blade bolts, at least the ones I've worked on. Some rear discharge decks have them too. I also recall working on some Kubota lawn tractors with LH threads on the LH blade bolt and RH threads on the right side. My parents had a 1970 Dodge Dart with LH lug nuts on the left side.

Threads on one side of my 53 Dodge,
and Power-Lok case screws (as others have said).
Also some ring gear bolts have left handed threads.

If your not sure if you have LH or RH bolts on something,
put two wrenches on two bolts next to one another.

Pull the wrenches towards each other (trying to spin one left, the other right),
the bolt moving in the correct direction to loosen *should* loosen before the one you are tightening breaks.

^I figured this out AFTER breaking a ring gear bolt in a Chrysler 8.75 gear set. :(

Volvo had a a/c condenser fan motor on the 740 series that had a left hand 8mm nut holding the blade assembly on.

I also learned the Fred based version of the limerick.

As I remember some left handed threads had the grooved hex heads like this.

Acetylene torch fittings have left handed threads.
