Lego Workshop and Barracks

We built a 2400 sq ft steel building back in 2004 to hold all our vehicles and to be a workshop. My wife (now a retired airline pilot) over the years developed a huge collection of Lego’s. It took it a pretty big corner of the workshop. We had always wanted to build a guest house on the property. Since the county assessors treats all steel buildings like they are storage spaces (they can’t legally come on the property to inspect them), we decided to combine the projects and build a multi use steel building. 2400 sq ft, but this one is 30 by 80. Three sides with stick framing. The back 8 feet is now an empty corridor but we hope to one day make it an indoor shooting range. The interior came out way better than we had hoped. We bought some of those Casper mattresses for the bunk room and they are amazing.

My wife came up with the nickname of the Long Barracks (from the Alamo) as opposed to the other building which we call the shop.

Interestingly enough, the power bill only costs about $40 per month with the AC blasting away this summer.

When can I move in? A shop, Lego room, and gun range? I don't even need the guest quarters. Legos were a major portion of my childhood and probably drove me to my career of architecture. I recently bought a 30lb tub of very old Legos to build some sets from my childhood as most of my collection was stolen from my Mom by some movers. My wife had never played with them before and is now hooked.

There are three of those rolling bin racks - most of the Legos in the bins were bought in bulk and then sorted. There are even specialized things like Lego food - pizzas, drumsticks, cooked chickens. We even drilled out the streetligh bases to put in bulbs for DC power.

I am quite jealous. If i hadn't lost my collection in a house fire, I probably would've played with legos indefinitely!
Your place is awesome. It reminds me of the basement on the lego movie.

She is getting her trains and buildings set again. She added two tables when we moved the stuff in from the old building. The big Lego dude was a retirement gift from a co-worker - his son-in-law is a skilled carpenter and built it. It has lights in the display case and her name on the glass. I don’t know enough about all the sets but apparently a lot of it has appreciated in value. I hate to think of how much work our heirs will have sorting it out one day.

So are all those lego kit boxes on the shelf untouched? As in, never been built? Why would you buy a set and then not build it? Or do you just put them back away after a build.

What does a highly paid airline pilot do with her toy collection?

Whatever she wants.

The look on the Kids faces would make it all worth while, young and old alike. Thanks for sharing your wife's love of Lego with us.

That's some serious organizational skill. I still have a couple tubs of Legos that's a blended mess of my childhood Legos from the 60s in Denmark and my now adults son's mindstorms stuff. I can't imagine actually trying to find a specific part.

Really cool setup. Love the Lego trains and the City Buildings....

My fraternity brother works for Lego North America and I always say that he has the best job - only guy I know with his own Lego bust in his office.

I just reassembled a bunch of my Space Lego sets from when I was a kid. My son is into them and really enjoys the Star Wars sets. Also, I just bought the Saturn V rocket for us to work on together - it's 39 inches tall when done!

Really cool! I have quite the collection from my childhood of 80's and 90's sets and spent a good chunk of my childhood making a 4x8 town with a train going around it.

Growing up, I was glued to my legos. So glad to have grown up with those versus a tablet.

If you have a gt3 technic set you want to sell...send me a PM! :)

I did exactly the same in our 30 x 80 one story
building in florida. Our steel bldg was built in 2001,was insulated with AC and slab. built a luxury 800 ft one bed inside. Added another full bath. The enntire retro done 2 years ago cost 22K, wife and I did everything except plumbing and electric (did a sub panel for the apartment. I'd be glad to advise anyone doing the same.

tez929rr, please keep us updated with an occasional progress photo. I remember the old setup (because I took photos) the double level train was most Lego impressive.

Did you set up the slot cars in that corner of the shop when the Legos were gone?..or are those hers too?

The slot cars are mine but currently just mounted on a plywood sheet (with cutouts) that can sit on the pool table. We moved the pool table and shelving to the back corner and now we can get all the cars out without moving anything else. The mower and tractor need my truck moved out but nothing else. Ignore the tall Costco tool chest - I replaced it with a HF 56” and haven’t decided what to to with it yet.
