Thanks Ray!
OSB (particle board) is commonly used to sheath structures up here. It's quite strong, but it needs to have some type of siding applied over top of it for weather protection. OSB on its own won't last long exposed to the elements.

Got a little more done today...

I cleaned up and hauled away the debris from the old shed this morning.
8414.JPG

I then picked up all the electrical outlets and switches I needed and mounted them all. I still need to run the wires, but it's one step closer! I have 14 120V outlets and 2 240V ones. I also mounted the sub-panel to the wall and hung up a couple of cheap T-8 shop lights to use until I get the power hooked up in the shop.

Haven't done much other than cleaning up for the past few days. On the plus side...the building inspector came by today to have a look and passed the shop with flying colours! Woohoo!!

Slowly but surely I've been getting more done. Siding has been ordered and I'm just waiting for delivery. Tonight I started on the house wrap, got the main portion done with one long length. I did all but the door end by myself...boy was that fun! Hopefully I can get the gable ends done tomorrow morning.

I also got the main lights mounted and wired over the past few days. There are three rows of three, 4-foot T-8's, and the two hanging shop lights in the pic will be moved to above the work bench once I get power out to the shop. Enough light for even the weakest eyes! I also added a few more 120V outlets. There's now a total of 18...there can never be too many, right? :D
8447.JPG

I snagged a couple more small benches the other day so they're temporarily sitting in the shop, plus I moved my tool boxes over. I'm still amazed at how much more room I have compared to the old garage! :)

I wonder if our US friends even know what Coop is? :)
As for new projects...once the Essex is done I have a '26 Model T touring body waiting to be built into a 40's style jalopy.

Looking good Al!! Can't wait to see it with the siding on it.
Thanks!! I can't wait for the outside to be done as well. I didn't think I'd get this far along this summer, to quite honest. I'm glad that I am, though.

Not much to update, just been doing some little stuff while I wait for the siding to show up.
I got the house wrap finished, the gable-end vents installed, the outside lights put up, and I spent today drilling holes through the studs for the wiring. I also cleaned up some of the scrap and garbage that's been left over from the build. Here's a few pics from today...

Another small update on the build.
I got the soffits installed as well as the fascia trim on the eaves. Gable end fascia trim will be done later as they didn't get enough to do everything.
Today I started on the siding and got all but the top row done on one side. If the weather cooperates I'll hopefully get it all done this weekend.

Thanks, Motown!

It was raining most of the day today but I got a bunch more of the siding done. The door end is on hold as I'm waiting for the pre-fab boxes for my lights and outside outlet.

That was as high as I could manage to do without help or a scaffold. Hopefully I can talk one of my buddies into lending me a hand tomorrow so I can finish off the two sides and the north end.

Thanks, Robert! Yes, it really is cool to have a piece of my teenage memories to cruise around in. When he offered to sell it to me I really couldn't say no. I have some changes planned for it, but it will continue to look pretty much the same as it does now.

Holy ****, am I ever tired and sore!! Siding a building with no experience and no help is a *****!! I have 3 of the 4 walls finished as of this evening, and I only swore a few times. :p

The only thing left to do on this end is the fascia trim and some landscaping.

The garage isn't even finished and it's already a mess! Most of it is materials for the garage so I guess that's ok.

I know your pain, you should try siding with hardiplank by yourself if you think vinyl is bad! Garage is looking great, ties into the house nicely and looks really clean. Wish I had a garage like that!

Thank you! I can only imagine trying to work with hardiplank or similar stuff. At least vinyl is lightweight. :spit:

Looking great Al...last meeting with the RM tomorrow night for my variance to pass, then I go full throttle to try to get mine done for winter!

Thanks! I'll cross my fingers for your variance meeting. You'll have to start a build thread, of course.

I tossed around the idea of doing a 12/12 pitch to my roof to match the house but Im already at the height limit and didn't want the headaches from the town tyring to get a variance for it. The cost was prohibitive as well.

Oh yeah...I might have the power hooked up tomorrow, or by the weekend at the latest. The guys were over starting to tie everything in in the garage today, they'll be back tomorrow to finish that up. I dug my trench while they did their thing so they just need to run the wire and hook me into the main panel in the house. Woohoo!!!!!

Thanks, Scott! I guess you could say it went up quickly...I just don't know when to quit! I hadn't planned to get this far with it this year, but the project kinda snowballed on me. I'll be taking my time finishing the inside though, just plan to do it a little at a time over the winter as I can afford it.

Here's a couple of pictures from earlier this evening. There's a total of eleven, 4' T-8 fixtures on 3 switches. You can never have too much light!

The black metal "ladders" are some old heavy-duty shelving from our local furniture store. They were going to toss it in the garbage so I grabbed it to build a workbench out of.
9037.JPG

I also had the electricians add a 3rd 240V welder outlet, and I added a ceiling fan. It feels so good having power out there finally!! :)

Probably the last update for awhile. There's not much left to do on the outside and the inside will be done slowly, over the winter.

I got the rest of the siding done and the outside lights mounted today. I surprised myself in that everything lined up and was level! :p

I also set up the sound system I've been putting together for the shop. The main speakers are the only thing I had to buy and I found them on sale for 80% off. The receiver, dvd player, and Bose subwoofer all came from one of my junk runs. Somebody upgraded their home system and tossed this stuff away!

Ok, maybe one more. :)
I've now got the trim around the doors painted and the gable-end fascia trim installed.

You moved through this very quickly and it looks great. I agree with you on never having enough outlets. Nice find on the furniture store racks, I look forward to seeing how you re-purpose them. Great score on all your stereo equipment. Looking good

Al,

I live just outside of Sherwood Park. We both started about the same time and I am impressed by how much ahead of me you are. Did you get your building inspected? I have to add some studs to my walls where the top plates are spliced and I see that you didn't have to add studs.

Nice shop. Nice truck. I have a 49 chevy 1 ton and this garage will be it's new home.

Thanks, Larry! I'll be starting on the workbench once I have the hotrod put away for the winter. Pics to follow.

Thanks Albert! I think part of the reason I'm further ahead of you is your shop is considerably bigger than mine so you have more to do! Another reason is that my business has quiet times, so I'm able to get work done on the shop during the day while everyone else has to be at work.
The building inspector passed my shop with only one minor change. I had to add cross bracing in the trusses from gable end to gable end. I'd never heard of doing that before but apparently it's a new change to the code up here. Easy fix, though.
I love your '49 Chevy!! I built a chopped '48 1/2 ton back in '98 when we lived in Calgary. Those trucks are one of my all-time favorite's. What are your plans for it?
Your shop is coming along nicely, too. I've been watching your build thread...can't wait to see it finished!

great progress. things are coming along very nicely. It's great having power and the ceiling fans are so nice this time of year. I got one of those industrial size fans the other day and between that and the ceiling fans it stays nice enough out in the shop that I only come in when it is time for bed. the wife is thinking maybe the garage wasn't such a great idea after all. lol. I don't know why but I guess it is good she still likes to have me around. I tell her she could come out here but she politely declines. I have a feeling you will be spending most of your free waking hours out there as well. again very nice job on the build.

Thanks, guys. I'm very lucky that I have an understanding wife. She figures as long as I'm out in the shop she knows that I'm not out chasing women, drinking, gambling, etc. She fully supports my hotrod hobby, too. :)
drmoonshine (cool name, btw!!)...no plans for a lift in my shop. The ceiling height is only 9' so a lift wouldn't fit.

Nice build, like the Essex pickup. You use a lot of partical board in your buildings is it for a structural member as in New Zealand we dont use that, what we do is put dwangs between the 4x2,s and then cover the outside with a water proof building paper then the outer skin of what ever you want to use.Hope this makes sence.Ray.

Hey Ray, I'm an ex-pat living in Vancouver, Canada. Its the only way they build here! At first I was a bit taken back because as we know, particle board is **** and falls to bits in NZ. But here, they don't even use the word dwang, haha. Thankfully, the OSB provides an extra layer of protection from the cold, which is fairly common here. I'm talking -45 in some places.

When I build my shed, I'll do both. Particle board, dwangs and waterproof paper. Just seems a little bit extra sturdy with those dwangs. Plus, its always great having horizontal studs to attach things too.

Little bit of an update on the build. The weather has been unreal for this time of year so I got some friends over and got the vapour barrier installed on the ceiling. One of them brought over a drywall lift as well, so after they left I spent the afternoon hanging drywall. Got almost half the ceiling covered today and should have the rest done by Tuesday.

Once the ceiling is finished I will be blowing in about R-40 worth of insulation up there. Then I get to start on the walls. Woohoo...this is the first time in my life I'll have a heated shop!

al, are you going to use batting in the walls? throw in some roxul in there. higher r value than the pink stuff and it is a better sound deadener than the pink stuff. i am totally re-doing my basement right now and going that route.

i like how much progress you have made. maybe i should shoot up there and check things out. make sure its going all right!!
i talked my wife into letting me build a 20x30 or 34 beside our house in the near future so now that you have experience.......

Yes, I plan on using batting in the walls. I'll check out the Roxul when I get ready to do them. As I only have 2x4 walls I'd like as much R-value as I can get.

It's only a 30 minute drive if you ever want to drop by...I always have beer or coffee available. PM for my number if you want.

In between a bunch of meetings today I managed to get the rest of the drywall hung and all the lights put back up. If I have time on Thursday I hope to get the insulation blown in.
