That is a very nice box. I’ve had a couple, and wish I hadn’t let them get away. The earlier ones had a deep top compartment.

Got this a few hours ago. Snap-on guy picked it up at one shop, went next door to his next stop and a guy bought it, then he posted it and I bought it. So it changed hands 4 times in a couple days.

I was thinking all of the boxes with these chrome handles had the chrome cursive Snap-on badge. Are these tail end of the black square badge era when they switched to the new handles but hadn't switched badges yet?

Anyone know the part numbers? Is the top box the most drawers you could buy at the time?
Chrome cursive started about 1958.

No but that's pretty cool!
Thanks!! It was a rusty mess when I found it in an old tool chest my dad got at an auction years ago. I soaked it in diluted molasses for a few weeks and found the stamped error. I love it, it's my favorite 1/2" drive ratchet of the bunch.

...and found the stamped error.
I don't know that I'd call it an error, so much as a flaw. Meaning, I don't think they actually built a stamping die spelled "FERRFT" and used it by mistake. I think that "FERRET" stamping die was missing the bottom of the "E". There was nothing there to make an impression when the tool was struck. Do you see how the stem of the "F" you're seeing does not reach the bottom? How its bottom is not even with the bottoms of the other letters? It's an "E" that's not only missing the arm at the bottom, but a bit of the stem at the bottom.

Wouldn't stop me from liking it and nicknaming it in my shop! If I said to a helper, "Hey, sonny boy, hand me the "FERRFT," a long running joke, he'd know exactly which one I wanted! :)

Welcome to GJ.

There was a war going on when my Ferret set was made and they were pretty casual about the quality of the stampings. The tops of the Fs don’t look too good...
Ours are very similar, I never thought about stamp wear being the culprit.

What a life these old gems must have lived! I'm adding photos of my whole SO stash - some of y'all have an incredible display, and make me want to be at the flea market as soon as the gates open in search of old goodies.

That wrench set is really something. Is the case gray? If so, I have a really old tool box bottom that same color (pardon the clutter)

Edit - it helps when I actually attach the photos...

We look forward to more pics!
Well, my problem is that I tend to collect a lot of things, so I don't have much of any one brand! However, I did pick up this cabinet the other day, and finally got it all put back together. Someone had broken the light off the top, which was an easy fix, but I have no idea what power adapter I need. This is the shorter version, if anyone would happen to have a clue on that front?

Thank you all for the info on the gray boxes! I knew my cabinet was made around WWII, at one time I'd found a catalog page for the old girl. It's built like a brick sh!thouse, and was my very first tool cabinet ever.

You'll fit right in around here with the generalists, then. A lot of spread the wealth. The best way to quickly acquaint yourself with the digs is to go to the Sticky at the top of the forum, titled "READ B4 POSTING." It has a FAQ, a permanent A-Z Index of Threads (there are A LOT of topics you can't see page 1, they disappear to page 2 and so forth in order of activity and can be hard to find when they do...), handy hints and links, etc.

Here's a few recent pickups all unmarked Snap-on Sockets thinking the ones with the " markings are the oldest ones an mtf alemite socket? And an unmarked 2 pinch loop handle no 1 not sure if these were ever made with the Snap-on marking before they went to the 4 pinch style or not

I received this 1/4” drive Snap-on ratchet yesterday that has me a little confused. It looks wartime but rather than an E or a G it has a 3 stamp. The three doesn’t at all resemble the 1943 date codes shown in the date charts. What do the Snap-on experts think?IMG_2366.jpegIMG_2393.jpeg

9/32 drive speeder, possibly the only one to pop up, this was pictured a few pages back in this thread. Has pinches around the center grip. Logo compare with a couple other early 9/32 pieces, and size compare with a 1/2 drive set in old custom case where I believe someone attempted to copy a master set case to save a few dollars.

Hmmm. I guess there are no absolutes, but on every SO date decoder chart I've see, the 1943 "3" has a distinct cupped curve to it's horizontal component. But, hey, there was a war on...

Is there a concensus on the socket on the left? The number style combined with the socket style isn't 100% the same as what I can remember as the usual suspects but I'm assuming Grey? With the tools that it came with being very early Snap-on I must speculate some relationship between the 2. Possibly an early version of what harbor freight is to many people today? Just a cheaper option to replace sockets or something?

And the ‘43 marked tools are so rare that there are very few examples to compare to. That’s why I was so glad to see Lugz’ 1943 ratchet. Here is another newer tool with a 3 that doesn’t match the date code charts.IMG_2391.jpegIMG_8164.pngIMG_8163.pngIMG_8165.png

first pic. late 20s 6pt. 5/8 drive, 1-3/16, 1-5/16, 1-5/8
second and thrid pic. 4 pt. S over O. 5/8 dr. 1-1/4, 1-1/16, 1, 7/8
4th. pic. 4 pt. 7/8dr, late 20s. 1-5/8 and 1-7/16
5th. 1" drive. late 20s 8pt. 1-5/8 and 1-7/8

1/2 drive 4 and 8 pts. the 13/16 is hard to find. I need one.
Working on finishing up my 4pt sets so searched out this post. Wondering if that was a typo on the 5/8 drive pic saying the biggest was 1-7/8. By comparison it looks like 1-7/16 but I could be wrong. I have 7/8" 1" 1-1/16" 1-1/4" traded off my 1-7/16 in 5/8 drive but picked up one in 7/8 drive. So trying to figure out how far in each direction I need to go

Working my way down the list still new a few 4pts that show up in cats and a few that don't. Biggest here is 1-7/16 and smallest is 3/8 I got near NOS in the pre date logo and picking up a partial to finish my near NOS in S/O style

This weekend I got some 1/4 drive S-O clutch head sockets in a trade w/ member D42jeep.
Monday I made a little socket rack for them. It's not my best work. I might leave it or shellac it or make another if it really bothers me.
Not the same years but 50s. Goes great with my other set in my 1960 Snap-On tool box

Need to get yourself some better larger drill bits, and a better bit of wood, so those edges don’t blow out. Maybe Forstner bit vs spade bit.
