I think i see the remains of some markings in the first pic.

Shadows and dust.
Here’s after a hand-brushing, side-by-side with a Newark,NJ-era No46 slipjoints.

Oh well. They cleaned up pretty good. Love those suction cup handles. Here is a 707 set box. Not sure what would have come in this, I think it may have varied depending on your car.

Welcoming some direction on dating this R-716 hex plug ratchet. Found among a lot of Britool hex drive sockets (minus any Britool ratchet). Was this directed at the British marketplace or is this in a US catalog that I’ve yet to turn the pages on?

Whoa. That's a cool find. That is a female hex drive in-house version of the male square drive ratchets they made for the very rare Craftsman C-series drive tools. The Craftsman branded 1/2-drive ratchet was C-97, and the Craftsman branded 3/8-drive ratchet was CF-87. A few people here own a set (tin medic comes to mind), but it would be quicker to go to AA. You'll see what I mean.

Snap on made some in square drive as well. This one is an r7408 1/4". There is a resemblance to the c97 snap on made for craftsman, though it is reversible.

In this case, since it was found among a cache of hex-drive Britool, I'll assume that the P.O. was using it as a makeshift drive ratchet, given there was no actual Britool ratchet found in the lot.

Is the catalog cut you posted really a 1971 catalog, OTG? I can't believe that they were turning out old designs like this that recently......

I have one of those. Looks to be 1 3/16 double square. Based on a 1" drive L-73 ratchet it carries the L-73 part number with a 52 date code. A standard 1" drive gear won't fit as the bores through the bottom plate and the top of the body are too large. It's next to an L72 3/4 drive head for comparison.

with a 52 date code...
I often have a hard time distinguishing the '52 "2" from the '42 "2", J.A.F.E., but I am leaning with Otg on this one. Note that the logo is the early one, very erect, with a long hyphen, not the one they started using around 1950. But what really has me thinking earlier is the patent (1,854,513), which was granted in 1932. Just my two cents.

The hyphen is a general rule, see some later items with the slanted hyphen.
They made the l73 into the 50's so maybe they did not change the stamping

Maybe a new picture with a little black crayon in the stamp?
The resolution of the original image can only be pushed so far.

Here is my 1931? K5 chest with the KT-1 tray but missing the handle. It is in the original black paint but quite faded. I have not yet seen one of these with “Chicago” embossed as they moved to the Wisconsin factory in 1932 so it would have been a one year maybe two year production.

Thanks for the interest. I have included what I hope is a better detail of the date code and text. I wanted it to be 52 because it has some personal relevance so that may have influenced me some.

Wow that is an early one.

Jafe could be either one. Really neat find!

Those are unusual. Nice add. You are going to need a really big hammer to get that box to close! I have some deeps but they are 9/32” drive. Here is a crowsfoot that I’m unlikely to ever find a use for.

A couple of largest 5/8" (#480 1-1/2" and #460 1-7/16") Heavy Duty Strike Over sockets that emerged from an odd lot I brought home yesterday. Well loved but still intact.

I don't really close that one! Just throw the ww2 stuff in there when it pops up. That 2" crows foot is ridiculous. Might make a cool hood ornament or a cup holder.
