Especially with smaller outfits. Oral history has always been vital, but, alas, less trustworthy, and it also tends to go unrecorded. The term "A LOT" is subjective, though, and relative. I have been very fortunate to be apart of some major research projects, such as the 50-page Willys MB toolkit chapter in the Lloyd White series, supported by an amazing trove of NARA documents donated by Willys-Overland from the Willys-Overland factory during WWII. The Smithsonian, Newspapers.com, Google Books and Mark Stansbury's ITCL have also been godsends for documented research. Our collective track record is pretty good. I'd say the ratio of cracked codes to unsolved mysteries is 3:1.

I meant “a LOT” as a broad remark concerning the general acts of human endeavor, which are usually more focused on hand-to-mouth existence than long-view sensitivity to historical legacy. I see how it seemed more pointed in the context of your discussion.

Looks like (with everyone’s help) I’ll be going down the rabbit hole. I picked up this box recently, and now of course I have to fill it. From some research I believe this is for a TM120 Midget Set. 1945 or 1946. I didn’t see a 1947 catalog so not sure if that is a possibility or not but the set boxes turn red in’48.

Question now is what year do I start filling it with?

Did they use previous year’s stock to fill in sets? For example, would (could) a ‘47 set as new contain some previous year’s date stamps?

They made a lot of ‘44 and ‘45 tools as the war wound down. You may find those easier to collect than 1946 or 1947 marked tools. Here are my two complete wartime sets.

Just noticed this "Do you remember if it came in an eyeglass case?"
I don't remember what it came in. I know I had the bits in a strip of wood drilled for the knurled end.

Jumped fast on a local Craigslist ad this morning. Had to pony up, but I’m liking them. 1947 I believe.

Found this yesterday. I think it’s a KR24A (or KRA24)?

I picked up an interesting Snap On ratchet today. It is an exposed-gear model similar to ones shown in the 1947 Industrial Catalog on page 12. The identification is "R-720 5/8" and the R-720 in the catalog is a 5/8 hex female drive. This one is 5/8 hex male drive!

I'm including some photos for your enjoyment!

Got a strange little bar with a 2254 Snap on stamp in a random box of stuff I picked up the other day. I posted it over on the Garage Sale thread, and Provincial was kind enough to run down the origin for me. Apparently this thing is the handle for a "Spark Plug Cable Shielding Elbow Wrench", which has the number 2454. Hopefully this will help the next person that's looking for this on Google:)

Here is my post so you can follow the links:

Found it! It is part of a tool for removing/replacing spark plug wiring on shielded ignition systems on aircraft. The main part of the tool is numbered 2454, and the handle is numbered 2254.

That wood handled driver is super cool and in incredible condition.

I found a couple amber handled drivers (separately) and am wondering whether the 3/8" drive is Snap-on, or possibly Blue Point.

I don't see any marks on the handle or shaft.

At least that one hasn't been plierized. Those are markings I could do without.
