Moved into my garage a few years ago and never spent the time to set up the existing pegboard that was in the garage. I just got to work on my projects, well I got some time over the weekend and boy did it take time to organize the pegboard and clean up my bench. Here's a before and after.

Looks great.

I use small wood screws to keep the little hooks from coming out when I pick up the tool. Also, there's a brand of pegboard hook called stay-put that uses thick screws to plant the hooks in the pegboard.

It's nice to have stuff where you can easily grab it.

I'm in process of finishing the interior of my 26' x 30' detatched garage. I was going to do the walls in the prefinished pegboard, but realized it might look to monolithic. I decided to use paneling top and bottom and 48" inch pegboard as the center section. The top panel section is about 20" / 48" center pegboard / 36" bottom panel section. I wasn't going to post photos yet as the project is not complete but the pegboard thread seemed like the reason to show the idea. I'm going to build a soffit on the wall where the the grinder is and have sliding doors to conceal shelving inside. I also have 12 more lights to install and either epoxy floor or VCT (?)

There's still some clutter in the shop as this is still a work in progress.....
I hope to have it all done and in neat order in the next couple of months. :)

No one can say I'm lacking pegboard !

Very nicely done, RbrtAWhyt and Regguy1!

I did a peg board installation several years ago in my skinny 1 car garage inlieu of tool chests because I didn't want to give up floor area real estate.

I can't stand the loose hooks that often come out of the peg board when you lift off a tool. So doing some research I invested in some Durahooks, they're a well make peg board hook system that screws into the holes using non-destructive specialty screws. They stay put, rock solid. Just flipp'n awesome peg board hook system.

Image-8CD4E76BA1CC11DB.jpg

Basically used 1/4" thick, 1/4" holed pegboard as wall covering.

Image-8CD501E5A1CC11DB.jpg

The height of the work bench was used as a reference for the
joint between the upper and lower panels.

Image-8CD564AEA1CC11DB.jpg

Close up showing the work bench / panel joint relationship

Image-8CD534E2A1CC11DB.jpg

The joints between panels were a 1/2" reveal and this design theme was
used throughout with all the panels set up on a grid. The 1/2" reveal was also
used along the bottom in the joint between pegboard and foundation.

Image-8CD5B070A1CC11DB.jpg

The final outcome.

One note, if you are going to do something like this with the gapped joints, then paint your wall black before you put up the peg boards. As it is, when I get some time I'll be masking off the joints and hitting them with spraypaint myself so the white sheetrock isn't as noticeable underneath.

Thanks. And I agree, it's a tough thing to explain. But I love the light. Here's the cheap-cake-pan 'art shot.'

Here's a picture of how I use wood screws to hold the cheap hooks in place. It really bugs me when you pick up the tool and the hook comes with it. (I hope no one's offended by a dog bone wrench. ;) )

Here are the Stay-Put type. I clipped these off to hold pliers.

I guess it goes without saying that I like pegboard -- since I sometimes use the hooks and hangers even when there isn't pegboard to put them in:

Jack, I went looking for the Stay-Puts at Home Cheapo but didn't find them. Can you post where you found them?

Same question for lupinsea with Durahooks.

I use OSB on the bottom four feet and white $9 pegboard from HD for the top 4 feet. I feel pegboard is a lot more useful and easier to install than wallboard...what a waste to wallboard and then put pegboard over top of it! I use the black plastic snap in hook retainers whcih are very cheap and readily available to keep the hooks from coming out.

I've been looking for 1/4" thick 1/4" hole size WHITE pegboard, and can't find it. HD and Lowes only have the 3/16" thick 1/4" hole size, and it's a LOT flimsier than the 1/4" thick stuff. I found the brown 1/4" thick stuff at Menards for about $10 per 4x8' sheet, and am considering painting it.

Jack, how did you paint yours? Spray paint cans, pressure sprayer, roller? And did you seal, prime, or just paint?

My current setup. I used plastic pegboard (which I haven't been able to find at the local HD or Lowe's lately) and built the benches out of 4x4's and an old computer desk. I still haven't decided if I like how things are arranged, but it's functional for now.

(please ignore the extension cord for the garage door opener - the previous owner did a lot of things I hate and am in the process of fixing. His idea of "fixing" a lack of outlets was many, many extension cords. Ugh.)

I found black screws so that the heads would look kind of like another hole.

I got them from McMaster Carr. I wish they were as cheap as the hardware store hooks, but if you figure out exactly what you need, you can keep it kind of manageable.

3/16" works just fine if properly screwed down to your studs every foot or so both horizontally and vertically. I currently have a '65 ford mustang flyweheel hanging on one hook with no sagging at all...it must weigh at least 15 lbs. I have over 180' of the white peg board in my garage and over 200' in my hay barn with no sagging issues and it looks trimmed out. The little black plastic hook retainers work great.

I'm at work now so I don't have pictures, but at FF I got a hook set that came with small black strips that hold the pegs in. Basically the black strip of plastic goes horizontally across the hook, such that the strip's cutout touches the hook and its own 2 anchor-feet use the holes to either side of the hook. They work well and are removable, and don't damage anything.

I'm not much for peg board but Jack's garage makes me want to change my mind. :)

I need to sort out tool storage still. I like having automotive tools in a box with a small tool cart to hold the 'currently in use' tools. For electrical/telecomm stuff I have a 'doctors bag' which usually stays in the house instead of the garage. The woodworking and general tools are the strange ones for me. I'm thinking peg board suites them perfectly, I just need to set aside a place to hang it.

jrkswld's black plastic strips are what I was referring to...they have barbs and fasten into the two adjacent holes on either side of the hook and hold nicely and are easily removed if you need to move the hooks.

are those the things the snap on truck uses to hold the tools on the peg board?

lupinsea,

When you remove the Dura Hooks is the pegboard hole enlarged or damaged in any way ?
Looks like a nice idea.

Nope. No damage.

The Durahooks use a specially made screw with big, broad, coarse threads. Believe it or not but there's no damage when you take out the hook. I've put hooks in, removed them, and reinstalled them in the same holes repeatedly with out any ill effect.

Most of the "hooks" in the Durahook system are rated at around 45 lb. holding power. On one double hook loop I have a very heavy 100 ft power cord in a reel that I hang on it.

I got my hooks from a local hardware store (very surprised they had any) but they are available all over the place on-line from Amazon.com and other retailers. Just type in "durahook" or "triton durahook" and see what there is.

There are also a very wide range of hook types, spring clips, and bin clips available in the Durahook system. One spring clip I especially like is their spray can clip. It lets me keep a number of different spray cans easily at hand (black spray paint for touch-up, brake cleaner, various spray-on lubricants, etc.).

Also, because of the way the Durahooks are attached to the peg board they can be run in 4 different positions, left, right, right-side-up, or upside down. It gives you further flexibility in figuring interesting ways of using them.

I started off with a kit that had a nice assortment of all their different hooks and clips and such. It let me see them in person and experiment with different configurations. From there I ordered more hooks as needed.

The hook system may be a little pricey but it is very very much worth it. I can't tell how much it freak'n bugs me how typical pegboard hooks pop off the pegboard when I go to grab a tool.

Pegboard vs Slatwall
As to a pegboard vs slatwall comparo someone inquried about . . . . Not sure quiet how the two stack up in comparison. I think the pegboard and all the various hook options out there (Durahook being just one, but all the different hook holders and stuff) probably give us significantly more flexibility for hanging hand tools and smaller items. The pegboard is (I think) weaker and only available in up to 1/4" thick sheets and needs good support.

The Slatwall stuff looks like it has larger scale hooks for larger items, shelving, etc. But I haven't used it, nor looked into it closely.

So to me it would depend on what you need it for.

I'm hanging ladders, ratchet tie downs, rakes, shovels, fishing rods, sanding discs for my Mark V Shopsmith (for sale by the way...first $500 gets it all) and all manner of ranch equipment with no sagging or tear out issues....pegboard is old school, granted, but nothing beats it for looks (if it's white) and flexibility.

Never was a big fan of pegboard until I moved into this house 12 years ago and it had almost 20' of 1/4 inch pegboard on the thrid bay wall. I use 1/4 inch hooks and am able to hang about anything I want with no sag. I've been using it this way for years and have never had any issues. I will certainly have it in the next garage I build.

There are some nice peg boards in this thread, and I like the stay-put hooks. My "tool organizer" below is still in the "model shop" for completion. Example, I still have to cut the felt liner below the rubber edge on the tool caddy on top. I will probably post a thread on how I built it when it is completed. But it is handy to move a set of tools out to the drive way. :)

One each for: flap wheel, grinding wheel, wire brush.

Then: two for cut-off wheels, since sometimes you need more blade and sometimes you can get away with less. I hate to throw the disks away only because I need one that can cut deeper.

Then: a spare. I guess it'd come in handy in case I'm going back and forth between two locations -- or if one of these cheapo units fails. At HF, six grinders total less than $90 when they're on sale. So I'm okay with the sixth not making a whole lot of sense. :)
