I can't stand the term man cave as well. Ever since a few years ago my wife and kid and I were boating in Lake Havasu Az. we were in a cove hanging out with like minded hot boaters (so I thought), when this dude (I use the term loosely) said with that lisp that is stereo-typical "nobody is aloud in my "mancave" unless the do something special for me". A little giggle came out, and we were gone.
My garage is clean, I have an epoxied floor, I have a fridge full of beer, and beer mirrors and pictures on my walls, oh ya I have a computer and a 52" T.V. My welders and fab equipment is stored in the back room untill needed. I don't have my camera out here with me to show you the powersteering leak my rockcrawler has. I appiciate everyones garage/ work space but if you spend more then 3 minutes looking for a tool you need to clean up! Don't mean to offend, just my opinion.

I do not drink beer or have a fridge in the garage. I do not have up a bunch of decorations. With that said I agree with EVERY single thing you said.

A woman cave!

No oil stains in sight, no welders, mighty classy looking cabinets, sofas … I would have let those pass. But a last-of-the-series Ducati 748R with titanium rods, Marchesini wheels, Termignoni carbon-fiber silencers …! No self-respecting Real Man would be caught with one of those!

[deleted]

This has got to be a woman cave. Now back to REAL man caves.

Not your typical “budwiser chick,” this one.

Not my wife, 87handmedown. Bad phone photo, and I also needed to blur some things there. That's the woman's "cave" and her Ducati. I think that's the loveliest Ducati ever made.

I felt guilty about posting that photo. It was not my place nor my bike and had no permission to post it. The fact that there was a Ducati in a woman's office was such a counterpoint to the Gasjockey's mandatory Harley. Anyway, I felt I was violating confidences and so have deleted it.

This one, taken about five years ago, I can post. My bike and car - both gone now – and my garage. No man cave this one, unfortunately.

"Man cave" is some trendy name that somebody that never did a lick of work on there car, bike,or house came up with I bet. I have friends with two different schools of thought. One can't do anything till he gets his 8 car mosoleum with the fancy floors and the cherry cabinets and the big screen plasma and the.....
Then you have the guy that has the concrete floors, (with plenty of oil stains),not much room to hang pictures because of racks of car parts and a old Mc Donalds golden arches. Which is the productive shop and which is the over sized living room? This is a free country and want the museum look,it's your choice. Nothing wrong with it. The term "man cave" has been over used by the media, most of which have never set foot in a real shop. Don't get me wrong, your garage, shed, barn, shop, etc. does not have to be dirty, greasy, etc. Look at any NASCAR shop they show on TV. BIG, plenty of lights, nice clean floors, plenty of storage, all the tools you would ever need and they get a lot of work done, but its a business. And it cost a TON of money.
For the average guy, do you want to get stuff done or do you want a oversized living room. Just my opinion. That's it.

The term man cave i think is a good term for a guys hangout lounge. As I have been house shopping, I have noticed that a lot of developers are now citing "man cave" as a room feature. So it's going to become as common as a dining room or a den.

I think it's a good term to differentiate the purpose of the room since rooms are generally designed or laid out based on their intended purpose.

The term is getting old for the most of us because we have been hearing it for years, for new folks or people not used to the garage scene, this is a new term, so they will continue to use the name.

I like the term man cave, because to me it's a retreat to where I can be stupid or work on stuff without anyone bothering me... it's my zone. Even though I have the entire house to myself, I like to set an area aside to where I can work, be messy, and do what I want without any regard for having it to be presented to guests... so the rest of the house can be immaculate.

This. We occasionally refer to our den as the man cave. It's my room. The walls are brown and all of the decorations are all fishing. There is a largemouth over the fire place and the center piece of the room is my 180 gallon reef aquarium.

Work gets done in the 12x24 shed or the driveway. The man cave is for relaxing away from the rest of the world.

Before I continue my rant I have to say one thing, Abstamaria, Beautiful car and bike. Any 916,996,998,748 is a work of art. They don't get voted motorcycle of the decade for no good reason.
Guess I am just old and I know I hate anything trendy. Before it was buzzword it was the garage, the barn, the shed, the shop, etc. First and formost it was where things got done. To my grandfather, it was where he built several tractors, wagons, pumps, go karts and a lone mini bike. He repaired small motors, welded parts for people and invented. It was my favorite place as a kid.
To my father, it was a place to keep his tools, house the family car, work on the family car/truck/station wagon that he had to keep running to get back and forth to work to support his family. Fix washing machines, driers, faucets, bicycles, mowers, toys etc. Only picture on wall was a calender from when before I was born with a woman,(fully clothed),on it. The rest of the walls were covered with rope, chain, block and tackle sets, old parts and anything else that might be useful again someday.

i would find it hard to do what i do in a "living room" type setting; couch, some trendy tiled floor, shiney cabinets everywhere, expensive tvs, etc. sparks everywhere, metal dust, torch splatter, oil spills, tractors w/tire chains, crawlers, large pieces of steel would not do much to perserve the look of most of these so called "man caves". there are shops, there are garages, there are hangouts, there are man caves. man cave is a trendy term for a guy type hangout, not usually for a functional shop. if you are more concerned with looks and entertainment than you are productivity, its a mancave. --and i am not including you guys who run a "clean" shop--

Tamborinni is one hell of a designer. I prefer my shop/garage/barn over a "Man cave". No hi def plasma (i do have a old TV). No leather couch. No marble/tile floor, just concrete. I am personaly thankful for it. I worked to many years in a gravel driveway. To my grandpa, my dad, my brother, the garage was where stuff was done. Things got done instead of just talking about it.

I think mancave used to be a good term. That was until the media, realtors, those with more money than mechanical skills and the others that try to keep up with the Joneses started to use it.

One of my fears is that a well intentioned relative is going to give me a "man cave" sign as a gift and expect me to hang in my garage. That ain't going to happen.

Bwaaaahhahahahahhaha!

I don't have any "collectibles", signs, dust catchers or other usless space-wasting **** either.

I agree. I used to have a lot of them and that's what they were. I got rid of all but a few and also stripped all of the stickers off my tool boxes and other cabinets. I am MUCH happier with the "clean" look!

Man cave is a term for a leisure area, would not think to call a working shop a man cave...just would not occur to me. If the "shop" is part of a home's footprint and is not a comercial venture I would say it is a hobby area...I love hobbies, think everyone should have one. Man's home is his castle, if he wants a hobby/leisure area or a wine cellar or sewing room or a dance studio or a forge or a machine shop or a musueum or an auto body shop or a model making shop or a recording studio or cold storage for his massive Star Wars collection or a place to play video games that is up to him. If he has beer in there I might join him...

The new shop isn't moved into yet, but you can bet it'll go "on line" pretty quick. From my old place, some pics of the typical look. New place is bigger to stuff in more ****. So maybe this will help you feel better. ;) I call this "comfortable work space".

See that bench in pic #1? That's 8'. The new place will have 8' of 30" wide and 8 more ' of 24" wide in a corner - think of the stuff I can pile on that!!!
