Well guy's to be honesty I'm just beginning to take an interest in axe's. I come across them pretty often at sales. I decided to pick up a few this year and see what I can do to/with them.
I've cleaned a few up and will be posting some pic's late when I can find them on my computer. I just upgraded to windows 10 and can't find anything...:wtf:

Thought I would post up some info on axe's . The terminology can differ from region to region . This diagram is pretty universal.

One of the first I picked up this year was this Plumb Victory . It was made for and sold by the Blish-mize hardware company located in Atchison, ks. Blish -Mize sold plumb from about 1910 until around 1980.

Re: Let's see your axe's

Found this lil boy scout hatchet . It was made by plumb and one of the few axe's or hatchets I found this year that had a serviceable handle. Although the red cap in the eye was missing.

Don powers funny thing but just this week I wrote two stories for the GJ one story about a wrench that I am sure 98% of are readers have never seen before, and another story about a Heller scraper and how it is used. Sad thing is not people are interested they would rather read about Chinese bashing and snap-on bashing go figure that one out.:(

Oh well maybe I need a GJ break from tool stories seems not many people are very interested...

When I get a chance I will take pictures of some axes in my collection but it might be some time before I get that chance.

This also was a plumb double bit axe. The axe it's self was in good condition but the handle was rotted. I cleaned and oiled this one up

Re: Let's see your axe's

The True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works single bit axe came straight from the farm. It was seriously beaten. Used as a splitting maul it was mushroomed and had several deep dings in the bit.

I managed to clean up most of the damage. A small spot still exist on either side of the bit. I sanded this one up and polished it. It came out so nice I decided to experiment with bluing one. After bluing it I ran the edge back across the sander to clean the bluing off the bit.

Re: Let's see your axe's

Top: nicely done. now you know how to start a thread. keeping pictures coming and answering members questions might keep it going. or maybe others will have plenty of axes to post. just an FYI to you Woody and all the other members here starting threads.

when i started the Vise Repair 101 thread i almost gave up after the first few weeks because it seemed like i was talking to myself. now it pretty much runs itself and i pop in and out as i choose to.

keep adding articles and pictures even if you have to borrow a few from Ebay or Google to keep the members coming back to the thread and hopefully it will be fun and informational.

good luck and i'll add pictures of some of mine as i find them

Woody: don't stop writing up the information you do because even if we don't respond to it that day we might need it a year from now. keep up the great work and i for one want to give you a big THANK YOU for spending the time to research and post them all.

There is another thread on replacing hammer handles. I have had more occasion to replace axe handles and I think I may still have an unused axe-head or 2 in the Can-Am garage.

Re: Let's see your axe's

This is the most recent one I have cleaned up. The fire axe is a versatile tool. Sadly the handle in this one didn't fit well and the previous owner had 6, yes 6 wedges in the eye to hold it on. It was a challenge to remove them all.
I got a lil more brave with this one. I really put some elbow grease on it to getter to shine. I was also able to maintain one heck of an edge one the bit through the entire process . It's not razor sharp, won't shave hair off my arm but it's very close.

Being a fire axe I decided to try out the bluing again but in a bit more detail. I've never tried this before and it was a learning experience . I wanted a flame job on a fire axe. I decided to make the flames look as though they were coming up the handle.
I think for a first attempt it turned out ok. I'll make adjustment to the process next time.

Yeah I'm going to have to practice with handle making. There are some video's out that make it look simple. Of course if you've done something a couple hundred times you can make anything look simple.

OP,
I like your avatar. That guy is an optimist!

I read your signature line to my wife Julie, and she said she'd send you a couple of my Parkers:shocking:, but she needed photos of your first born...:wtf:

I've got a broad axe with a crack and a rusty adze that both need handles. Where do I get some ash or hickory for them? And I have a draw knife with adjustable handles. Still looking for a good froe.

There is more interest in these tools than you know.

BCZY LOL , The Parker 86 is a rare one. If you have one I'll come pick it up.
You can usually get hardwoods at any bulk lumber yard. Cabinet makers will know where these places are. They sell rough cut lumber in bulk or by the piece.

Those are pretty nice looking . I like the rough finish contrasted by the smooth bit.

I'll call them Monday and order one over the phone. I talked to the manager of that department, and he promised to pick me a good one out of their stock, since the quality of the handle varies a bit. They were out of stock when I checked before.

Re: Let's see your axe's

ALL: my Gramps was a logger in the PNW (Pacific Northwest) for about 65 years (16 to 81 years old) and when he would cut down the big trees up in the woods he would take an axe and chop a few spots to set in his 2 springboards to step up in the tree to use his chainsaw. my Gramps could hit the same spot on a block of wood every time if he didn't cut a piece of firewood on the first swing and he was still pretty accurate even as he lost 95% of his eyesight.

here's some pictures of some of the trees he cut and took on his trucks in the late 50's and since he used to take me to work with him when i was 4 to about 10 i saw a lot of these in person.

cheers and i'll try to find some of my axe heads and his Fro he hand cut cedar shakes with.

Here's my Marbles in "as found" condition:

I haven't taken any pics since I cleaned this one up but I can tell you it's some of the finest tool steel I've run a file across. No blemishes, imperfections or defects of any kind.

Drives - Love those photos!!! I hope to see more of these posted, I'll be watching for more over the future.

Some really great pic's Drives. Guys like your Gramps helped build this nation with simple tools and brute force. They could master the swing of an axe to get the most out of every stroke like it was second nature. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Let's see your axe's

Here's some interesting reading from the National Forestry Service on the history of the axe in the US. It's brief and has some good illustrations.

http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf99232823/pdf99232823Pdpi72pt04.pdf

Good read.

Seems the U.S. had the same issues with european axes that we did ... back in the day.

Bit of a read about axe progression down here,

... in this link. http://mileslewis.net/australian-building/pdf/05-timber-frame/5.02%20timber%20processing.pdf

Its a bought one ... from Krugers

Had to do a bit of reshaping and adjusting the shoulder to get the Brades head on it tho.

Would have been nice if it had just been a ... slip the head on/bang in a wedge ... job .. :D

Where do you buy your handles?

... most hardware stores, down here, carry them .. ;);) .. :)
