Re: Let's see your axe's

I picked up a Norlund Tomahawk ax a few years ago. For the few fires we have during the winter in Florida, it's fine. I really dont need a big ax.
I was looking for a pic online, and see some pretty high prices being asked for the particular ax?? Wow!

For sure! Belknap Is renowned, Much like Shapleigh's hardware in St. Louis Or Blish-Mitz. Makers would make and stamp tools just for those big hardware stores. There names and brands became house hold names. Shapleigh's at least in my neck of the woods was TOPS!. You may have heard of a few of there brands. KEEN KUTTER and Diamond Edge. Shapleigh's bought out Simmon's around 1900 if I remember right. Belknap was right there with them! Do you know if they are still in the hardware business? Shapleigh's unfortunately aren't . Blish-Mitz are! So many of the mom & pop's are gone. My local one, Wyeth hardware closed a decade or so ago. A sad day but a great sale! Lots of NOS items. If you are lucky enough to have an old hardware store in your area... support them! And shop for one of those NOS items buried of a back shelf!

The Belknap building got blown up in a movie scene with Sylvester Stallone and I think Wesley Snipes. IIRC the name of the movie was Demolition man. You can google it if you really care.

What's cool is I was at a knife show in Louisville, KY right before they made the movie. The building was still there but in bad shape. I drove right up to it. There was some bricks laying there that were falling off of the corner stone of the building. So I grabbed one. Very cool item. I can't prove where it came from. But me and my son know. He was about 10 at the time. Something to hand down.

One of my biggest regrets of my life happened at that knife show. It was a week end long event. I was after a complete collection of a special edition of the John Primble knifes. I only had money to spend on that.

So the first day there was a really cool foot operated big *** grinding wheel from belknap hardware. It was from the 1800's. The guy only wanted $30 for it. But I could only afford to give up $20 since I was waiting for something in my collection to show up.

I worked on that guy all week end. He wouldn't come down and I wouldn't go up. So on the last day I was the last guy there. I went to give him his $30. I got to watch some guy hand him a $20 and walk off with it.

I still get upset over that and it's been 20 years,,,lol.

The first pic is of a knife display out of the store in Louisville. The second pic is a display case me and my son made 20 years ago. They've just been sitting in my basement collecting dust. Actually my son did sit the store display in my living room just a week ago.

There 15 minutes of your life you won't get back,,,lol. Sorry.

Fantastic story! Thanks so much for sharing. Stories like yours is what attracts me and maybe a few others to collecting tools.... or bricks. I have a piece of the berlin wall. I was stationed there when it came down. A very nervous time to have been in the military ... Who knew only a few years later we would end up in war . Not with USSR but Iraqi's ... sadly we're still there.

Any way thanks for sharing

Let's see your axe's

Looks like "Plumb USA"

Makes me want to look at my grandfathers hatchet at my parents house.

I've got a hatchet and an axe from the 2005 range..

Re: Let's see your axe's

I only picked this True Temper Jet Rocket camp hatchet this week. It paired up with a Jet Rocket 16 0z. curved claw hammer I just picked as well! The hammer is much older sporting the 56 pat date but the hatchet has seen very little use. It only took a couple swipes with the diamond file to bring the bit back to life.

here is my Henry Cheney broad axe and Collins forest axe. I know the H. Cheney is turn of the century but not sure the age of the Collins. Any expertise would be appreciated. They are both sharp and I use them for mast making.

John Neeman makes some BEAUTIFUL tools, I can't afford them though! The other axe you posted with the handle you made was excellent as well! I had a few gransfors but needed to get rid of them (needed money)...

Those/that look/s like art than a tool. I'd be too worried about cleaning it up afterwards to actually use something like that. But I suppose like most product categories the quality and craftsmanship means repairs and maintenance are easier.

Nice find, I am at Restore weekly. Scored large last week but not a axe. One thing about axe heads is many times the stamp can be well filled with age. My Walters axe had no legible stamp until I started cleaning up the head.

Leave it to the color blind guy to miss the obvious. I think this axe is easily accessable to take a glance.

I have so much on my plate that I'm starting to plan work for my retirement years. I have a number of axe heads from ReStore along with at least two double-bit axes I have had for 20+ years hiding in my garage. Let's hope it doesn't take 20 years for me to get to them ...

I have this little hatchet my neighbor gave me. It is older, but almost unused, lots of shelf wear in the shed. It is a Stubai from Austria. Anyone familiar with these?

They are fine tools. Clean it up, and it'll be an excellent user. I'd like to have one myself.

Yep, probably army, and the handle has been replaced as the army hatchet handles were painted OD. Look closer for a year date.

Here is a Wards POWR - KRAFT hatchet. The number on the handle has not come up in any searches yet. Seems to be original handle based on looking at the head mounting.

So, possibly a broad axe ? Based on the bevel only being on one side ?

Didnt want to buy it being broken, but the guy sold it for .50 !

My yard hack ... a bit worse for wear and needs a new handle ... but still servicable.

Plumb%2002b_zpsbx4jtrxq.jpg

... and this little fella just got a new, spotted gum handle, the other day.
Being an old brit, Brades, with an aussie wood handle,

... probably puts it below, GJ standards ..

Re: Let's see your axe's

The last couple weeks I picked up a few hatchet's and axe's. An unbranded crown or Michigan style dbl bit axe, A Walboard 21 oz dry wall hatchet, A Craftsman hatchet, Est wing leather ringed hatchet, And an old Keen Kutter Hatchet head with claw hammer . All pretty nice stuff. I have to clean up the unbranded and look for some markings and I may try my hand at making a handle for the Keen Kutter . I have been wanting to try doing this for a while and now I have a head worthy of the time.

Re: Let's see your axe's

Hi All,

This is my first post on Garage Journal!

Here is my grandfather's hatchet I just restored, a Craftsman 1.25 lb model. I was able to clean up the head with some sandpaper and scotch-brite. The old handle was worn, rotten, and loose so I installed a new solid hickory one. To protect the hatchet for the long haul, I made a leather cover for it.

It ended up being a great project. I am really looking forward to finding other older and antique tools to restore!

Would be nice to know Lotto numbers in advance,

Serviceable and not nearly as nice as most of the others on here ..

Hey nice work! I have to tell you though ...old rusty tools are habit forming. Before you know it you'll have several years worth of "projects" !
