My 79 yr. old buddy moved into an apartment, (tired of the upkeep on an old home) so I inherited his dad's grinder

Kingston-Conley made those grinders and a whole mess of companies re-badged them.
Personally, it's one of my favorite designs around.

Nope, it went into the scrap bin.
Don't like water around around electricity anyway.
Made two new holders, from steel, for storing the buffing compound
right on the machine.

Kirbot... That's great info! I have wondered the manufacturer of this style for a long time. Thanks for sharing!

I swear these things have a hold on me.

This little one was an enjoyable hour drive to Ft. Gratiot, MI; yesterday.

Spent a couple of hours cleaning and wheeling. Silicon spray brought the power cord and 'rubber' feet back to like-new condition.

The eye-shields are the same style that I used for the 3/4 HP Block grinder, but a bit smaller: 4.25" x 4.5" vs. 5.25" x 5.0".

It's condition is not as mint as the 1/4 HP I got for my brother last month; but that one was $35, this guy was $15 and a nice drive.

Oh, the seller had great living room lamps with shades for $10/ea. I took two.

Thanks for looking.

The 12" wire wheel that came on this 1hp Dayton gets lots of use. Probably
the best $10 I ever spent, although I grabbed a couple more bargains at this
liquidation auction a couple years back.

I'm not sure how old this one is, it belonged to my grandfather. It's the only one i've come across so far and still works perfectly. It's an Ingersoll Rand.

I just picked this one up for $50. It weighs at least 250 lbs as it took 3 of us to lift. The bottom is made out of 1/2" plate. Even the sides are made out of 3/8" pressed plate steel. This is a 10" grinder and definately the most beefy grinder I have seen in a garage. I love the discharge tubes coming out the back. It looks very cool. I will be painting it all gloss black and the center band on the head is actually stainless steel so that will get polished. When its running, its whisper quiet!!Anyone know what vintage this falls into?

The weird thing is the RPMs. It looks like 3500/1800? It does spin way faster than my old grinder and the air current coming from the wheels is incredible.

Here is my "Ugly Betty" latest find. It is a 1968 Baldor 1/3 hp, 3450 rpm, bench grinder. I picked it up for a 15 dollar value trade, yesterday. The on/off switch was bad, which is now replaced, with one I had in the drawer. It runs as smooth as silk, but needs some cleaning and a good rattle can paint job. I called Baldor, and as usual, I got an air head, who when I asked for the original specs, such as paint code, etc. was speechless, and clueless. In doing my own research, I found it had a "Reliance Blue/Green" paint job on it from the times. I have not been able to find such a color, so I think I will go with John Deere Green, as I have some left over from my Windmill rebuild Job. I scrounged a couple of plexi glass shields from an old chineese grinder that will fit. The last two pics were borrowed from another site, for reference. I look forward to putting it into service soon.

It's a 1/3HP Craftsman model 397.19580. Picked it up from craigslist a few months back for $40. I think I need to replace the wire wheel as it's looking a bit, frazzled. Only drawback is putting a made in China wheel on an old school American made grinder. Just seems wrong. The other downside, I now want another bench grinder. :D

I just won an auction with about 45 grinding wheels included, I am on the lookout for a large grinder to go with them. I think they are 10", won't know until they get delivered but they look huge in the pics.

I just picked up a Craftsman block grinder myself. 1/3rd horsepower. It's a bit of a basket case but I only paid $10 for it at a local swap. I've already started the resto and will eventually start a thread about it.

I bought this Milwaukee last fall for $25. It works great and I've been really happy with it. I had a USA-made Craftsman before I bought this grinder. But it was a cheap model with a plastic housing. It shook a lot and wasn't very high quality.

Here are some pics I snapped before I mounted it.

It's a 4-pole motor so the speeds are 1,500 RPM @ 50Hz and 1,800 RPM @ 60Hz.

I'd guess 50's but I don't know much about B&D other than they used to make really good stuff.

How would I go about replacing the cord on a Craftsman 397.19580?

The one I got works perfectly, but the previous owner cut the cord by accident, then rewired it to itself and taped it back up. It seems fine, but I would prefer to not have the repair there.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Great grinders!

Anyone know why they ever die? What finally wears out? Or is it more likely along the way they get tipped over or soaked? Thanks for any help.

Hey not quite sure I have done this right but here are a couple of my grinders. My Favorite is the Sioux 10" 3/4hp 1725 rpm. It seems to be 40's era. I have not been able to power this one down like I can with another newer 3/4hp one I have here. The Black and Decker eight inch is another real gem that has power to burn. I added the belt sander I picked up from www.tricktools.com. This combo is unbelievable. Originally the belt sander came mounted on a 1/2hp Jet. It was good but this ones great. Plus I no longer allow cheap imported tools in my studio unless I am desperate. That and the fact cheap tools are too expensive for me. I am a fan of most 40's and 50's tools. The last one is my Black and Decker Twist Drill Grinder. I was told by someone who contacted Black and Decker that this one was mid twenties but have not confirmed that myself. I often run this one for an hour or two at a time. Never gets hot and runs like a champ on a couple of squirts of oil. I have seven bench grinders in here now. One reversible one that I don't have a pic of yet. I have never seen a reversible one before.

Found on Craigslist and drove in a snow storm last weekend to acquire this beauty:

In perfect working order and I plan on tearing her down and refinishing her with either paint or have my buddy powder coat her.

That rusty grinder above looks a lot like my early-eighties All-Trade 1/2 HP made in Taiwan. I got mine for free when the neighbor wanted it gone during his move.

What I take away from this thread is that there are no modern bench grinders worth a salt and no one wants to be seen owning one, thus no pictures of them here...

Anyone know what this one is?Picked this up off CL today. 8",runs smooth, might need bearings.
From what I've seen photos off, looks like a Milwaukee. The switch and base is similar to some Baldors and the motor was grey brfore the blue paint.
Let me know your best guess.

My guess is Wissota.

Agreed that the base looks a little like Baldor, but is wider than Baldor bases. The wheel guards and tool rests look like Wissota, and the reason it looks like a Milwaukee is that Wissota was the actual maker of Milwakee-branded grinders for many years.
