Hey Dog, That can happen from having too much hook in cutters, from filing too low in the tooth or the rakers to low both set up a vibration in the crankshaft causing it to break off.

Wow, never knew that! Thanks.

At six times what I can mix non-ethanol and good synthetic at 50:1, I would hope so! Looks to me like $12 for gas, $4 for a cool metal can and $54 for marketing.

Don't forget a savings in time, frustration, and repairs. Not everyone uses fuel fast enough before it goes bad. Premixed does not have the impurities of pump gas and lasts years not months. [emoji12] That's why I buy premixed. Sure, its way more expensive, but I haven't had an issue with any2 cycle equipment since changing. If I used my equipment daily I'd just use motomix for winterization and mix myself the rest of the year.

This video illustrates your point very well from Steve's Small Engine Saloon
regarding the "bad stuff" in pump gas (maybe you watched it as well):

And I agree, the most economical way is to mix your own fuel most of the year, and then for the last tank or two before winter storage, switch to the pre-mix fuel so the carburetor and tank will be filled with the good stuff when it is stored.

I just went to the Cenex station yesterday and got 50 gallons of E0 fuel (5 cents per gallon cheaper than the E10 at the Shell station a block away - woo hoo I think that's a first) in Jerry cans. So I'm set for the winter for the generator (and for car if needed if we have an extended, widespread power outage), and will end up using most of this fuel for next year's mowing season.

Or empty the saw's tanks and run their carbs dry before you store them.

I mix my own fuel and oil because I'm particular about the oil. Any good synthetic will do but I prefer Redline Allsport. I've used it in off road motorcycles and OPE for close to three decades and it's never let me down. The engines I tear down look good. And it makes the exhaust smell a lot better than many other oils.

E0 is expensive and hard to find here, so I get E10 from a busy station. 91 octane because the blender pump was probably pumping 87 before me. That way I know my 5 gallons are at least 89 octane as required by the engine manufacturers. I mix a gallon at a time. When the 5 gallon jug reaches 2 months age, I put whatever is left into the truck or mower and get another one.

Between putting up 2-4 cords of firewood a season off my land, cutting up trees that don't get used for firewood, cutting brush, and running weed whackers and blowers, I go through a good amount of premix for a homeowner. That makes my system worth doing.

I do roughly the same, except I have an Echo blower that wants hi-test, so I usually pump a couple of gallons into the truck first, before filling the cans.

I've been getting better about not premixing 2 gallons at a time, except in the fall when the blower will get a lot of use.

I'm also trying to get better about running carbs dry.

Anything that sits over several months goes into an "old gas" can, to be used to light bonfires when getting rid of brush and fallen branches.

I might go back to mixing my own once I burn thru the rest of the go. Ethanol free has been hard to track down for years, then I stopped looking for it. Low and behold today I stumble upon it. Filled the car up with it for winter storage, I swear it runs better.

Have had the MS150TC & MS461 for 5 years or so, that combo replaced an MS260 & MS660 combo that I sold off. Both have been flawless.

Last week I picked up the fuel injected ms500i. This thing is a game changer. Starts on first pull, light as a feather and I swear it’s got more power than that MS660 I hated.

What is your real world use feedback of the MS461 vs MS500i? Balance, weight, power, etc?

I picked up a Stihl 044 (grandfather of the MS440) for a great price on eBay. Rear handle was busted and it had low compression at 102psi. Still ran well, but she’s going to be a screamer shortly.

Advanced timing

Milled the base of the cylinder for ~20psi more compression. (Squish went from .048” to .020”)

Ported intake and exhaust

Re-timed intake and exhaust to 104/78 degrees, which is like installing a cam in a truck motor.

Rebuilt with new bearings and seals. New piston and cylinder.

Repainted with tractor paint that’s a near perfect match for Stihl’s gray. (Stihl sells a spray paint that is absolute junk. Tractor Supply is the way to go!)

I've got an 044 that I need to finish. Been thinking of sending it out for a port, but will probably just do a gasket delete and call it good. Having said that, if you have any tips on how to clean up the ports a bit (woods port?) without getting crazy, I'm all ears.

Question for you -- did you advance the ignition timing? If so, how does one go about doing that on an 044? Do you have to enlarge the keyway on the flywheel?

I hear you on the paint. I use Valspar Tractor and Implement Ford Gray. The stuff Stihl sells is absolute garbage.

Still trying to work my way down to the 3 saw plan - 020T, 026, 044. Have about 45 to sell before I get there.

Today's victim -- freshly rebuilt Stihl 066. 92cc, no decomp. Will pull a 36" bar, but I had a 28" on it, which it likes better. I have a bunch of other saws available for a 3' and longer bar.

Built in 1994 or so, but still in pretty damn good shape. Spent a few hours today cleaning it up and figured I'd post a few pics here.

I'll be picking this up tomorrow as a "parts" saw. Husky 460 rancher with a 24" bar. I bought it off Govdeals for less than $20.

I'm not even sure if it was used by looking at the bar in the picture. I'm wondering if it didn't get regular gas right off the bat ?

Hopefully, the milk crate comes with it.

Working on a complete rebuild of my favorite model of chainsaw - the Jonsereds XF. It's a 110 cc beast from the 1960's, sometimes referred to as the World's Most Beautiful Chainsaw. At one time I had about 10 of these, but I have slowly been rebuilding and selling them. I have 3 or 4 left.

So this is my new to me saw. It's a Husqvarna 460 Rancher. I bought it off Govdeals as a parts saw. Including auction bid, tax and buyer's premium, I'm into this saw for a total of $18.75.

Looks pretty clean. My first thought was someone used reg gas.

Low mileage 24" bar.

Doesn't look scratched up.

Looking at the S/N, it appears to be of 2018 vintage.

So the story goes, it belong to one of the Metro parks in Franklin County. Somebody was cutting along the river, they went for a swim and so did the saw.

Was it running for the swim? Compression? The bar alone got your money worth...if you have other saws with that mount.

Nothing crazy, my 2 favorite saws.

MS361 with a 16" bar...about all I really need.
372xp original, wide clutch cover, large dogs, full wrap handle and 24" light bar.....setup for noodling mostly.

And a tach to tune them with because my ears aren't the best.

...so the good news is, it was fresh (not salt) water???

Mike

Fresh water. From Franklin County Metro parks near Columbus.

I'm pretty sure it was running. That's I'm guess it hydraulic'ed a rod. . . . or was left to dry out and the bearings got rusty and seized.

I can't get it to turn over so I can't check compression.

I figured I could sell the bar for what I have in it and include the rest as FREE. But it's not getting sold, right now.

I already gave the neighbor the bottle of Husqvarna fuel mix that came with it. No other Husky saws here.

I want to work on this saw but I already have a Stihl tore about in pieces. I need to get back together.

This has become my new favorite go to saw, with the 9 amp battery and Sharp chain you get a lot of cuts plus it always starts.

Pretty cool old Stihl - 048. The 1117 series (042/048) saws were only made for a few years; said to have been targeting sales to military. It's a 76cc saw; not quite as powerful as an 046, but not far behind it.

I got this several years ago and went through it. New piston, lots of NOS parts, aftermarket felling dogs, pressure pot muffler. Took me months to find a full wrap handle. Just pulled it off the shelf and dusted it off. Just need to do a bit of fine tuning and it's ready to go.

Here are a couple of my saws.

Remington Super 754. I inherited from my grandfather. After 30+ years of sitting in my grandfathers' basement it is running again (not great but surprising well for the amount it sat) with only a quick clean out of the fuel tank and priming the carb. I currently have it apart to rebuild the carb.

Remington SL9 Also from my grandfather. I have not had a chance to work on this one yet.

Homelite Super Xl. My brother got this one for free as someone else was about to throw it in the trash. Quick carb rebuild and it runs great.

Not too familiar with Remingtons, but there are a lot of Homey Super XL's out there. Capable saw with lots of parts availability.

What is the market rate these days for a Stihl 440 Magnum (16" bar) and a Stihl 260-C (14" bar)? Both low hour and running saws.

Both have been replaced with newer models but there is still a pretty good market for them. New you're looking at $900 and $600, seeing they have low hours I would start at asking $600-650 and $400-450. Get them cleaned up really well before listing.

The 395 is my favourite.

20210109_154013.jpg

I like it so much i bought a second one, as a display saw. Its never had fuel or oil in it.

20200913_134746.jpg

First saw i bought was this 572. Added the full wrap, usually runs a 20" bar, and it rips with that on, but pulls the 28 fine too.

20200830_190442.jpg

I want the 592 now, and would like to build a 372XPW as my display 395's baby brother.

Are you talking about the Jonsereds group? If so, I'm a member. There's not a group for just the XF, is there?

Speaking of FB groups, I started the Stihl 1106 and 1109 (Lightning, Contra, 070, 090, 090G, etc) series group on FB a few years ago. We have around 2,000 members from all over the world. You can find it if you're on FB by searching for 070 090 Stihl group.

Still selling off all my collector saws and have decided that I'll keep 4 or so when it's all said and done.

Here's what I decided:

Stihl 020T Super - 35cc - top handle saw. I don't do much work in trees, but it happens occasionally. The one I have runs, but it needs a complete rebuild. I have sourced a few NOS bits for it and I have a rear handle 020 Super that I can use for parts.

Stihl 026 Pro - 49cc - nice saw that I got in a trade from a buddy in Europe (I think he's in Belgium?) for Echo twin cylinder saws. Just went through it, new Meteor piston, Caber rings, squish set at .021, muffler mod, rebuilt carb. Currently running .325 chain on a 16" bar. Thinking about stepping up to 3/8" chain and maybe an 18" bar; have what I need to make that happen. Tuned it and it hit 14,400 rpm and could have gone higher, but I didn't want to lean it out any more. Set it to where it tops out at 13,000. Should clean up in the cut.

Stihl 038 Magnum - 72cc - got this out of the UK about 6 years ago. This was my first real pro saw and the one that got me started on collecting. It's been apart in a box for 6 years (bought complete, but took it apart to see what it needed). Rebuilt now with powder coated case, NOS piston, muffler mod (took a dual port and added another port), NOS fuel tank, and a bunch of other NOS bits. It will probably have a 24" bar most of the time - 3/8" chain - but I have a 28" that I can throw on it when needed.

Stihl 076 Super - 111cc. I have a few of these. Won't have a lot of use for it, but will be nice to have something with a long bar (I have several 36" and a nice 41" too) when needed. Both of mine are runners, but I'll rebuild both and keep one.

Stihl MS261C-M with heated handles and carb, quite comfy in winter.
Picture is out of the box for first setup, no present one on hand…

Hi Guys, I have a few 55 and 70cc Partner saws from the '80 that are fully restored and like new. It's time to sell them to somebody who cares about this very fine brand. Can anybody give me a tip on how/who/where to sell them? Thank you.

1965 or early 1966 Homelite XL 12 my Dad & Uncle bought this saw new.
Still runs great, Dad never used it much, but my uncle sure did, he used to sell firewood.
I make & sell felling spikes for these saws, and the Super XL's on Ebay.
Sold over 130 of them so far, recently started offering a stainless steel version as well.
That's the prototype mounted on the saw in the pictures.
