I have been redoing a # 397.19590 1/2-HP industrial rtop. I didn't notice until reassembly tonight that it has 2 different inner wheel guards. Can someone with the same model look and see what the correct inner guards are or give me the part numbers. .

Hi All - Picked up a 1/2 hp today off CL for $50 and hoping I can get inducted into the club. It works good and is complete except for one eye shield (see attached). Also got the blade sharpener with it. Thanks for all the great info on this thread. Two questions:

1) anyone have the instructions for attaching and using the blade sharpener.
2) anyone have a source for a 7 inch diameter, 1 inch wide wire wheel with 1/2 inch arbor.

I have the same grinder, the wheel guards are correct. If you have a spare right side wheel cover, I'd gladly purchase it from you. I've been trying to find one for three years now.

So they came originally with 2 different style inner guards? Wonder what the reasoning was?

I can look at my 1/2-HP m-397.19590 to check part number; but here's a front-on and RH side view picture of it showing the same configuration as yours.

What's up with that?

Kaervak - Sorry, no spare either.

Finding missing parts for the Blocks, especially the rtops, can be very difficult. That is why I put it at the #1 consideration when determining the price I'll pay for a Block.

Good luck, and don't give up. About 3 months ago I located a LH cover for the 1st CM grinder (0.33-HP pre-Block m-115.7566) I restored over 5 years ago.

Torqueman, the circlip inside the case halves is shown in post #6347 pics 5 and 6. Where the bearing is seated on the shaft. I've never seen that clip before. Instead of a shoulder on the shaft, they made the shaft smaller and put the clip there to stop the bearing on install. The snap ring (retaining ring) outside the case halves stops the inner wheel flange on install. The rotors and stators are top = 397-19470 3/4 h.p. And bottom = 257-192190 1 h.p. They are from the two grinders in post #6278

When I got back to Michigan, these were in the truck with me.

Thanks, I got lucky on both these 3/4-HP Blocks. Both sellers held them for me to pick-up with just my 'word' and no $$.

Anyone here got a wiring schematic for a 1957 pre-block (mailbox) 1/4 hp grinder, or a link to one? I have searched for one, and cannot seem to find a matching one. Finally got mine back together, and apparently cannot make sense of the wiring photos I took. I re-did the wiring in mine to replace the crumbling fabric covered wires, and thought I had wired it back as my photos show, but when I plugged it in (in a surge protector) and turned it on- nothing, but a fan I had plugged in the second outlet on the same plate bogged down. Seems something is shorting. If anyone has a schematic, it would be appreciated.

XS: i'm sure the guys on here have the knowledge to help you, but finding a 60-70 year old piece of paper might be tricky. can you take and post several pictures? the more the better and i'm guessing somebody will know what you need to do?

DOC: dang the 3/4 block found it's way to your shop in great shape not knowing that you can get any block up and running. all the better and looks like it just needs a little spiffing up.

False alarm. Found that the spring washer that goes between the bearing retainer washer and the bearing on the left side was off center, putting pressure on the inner race ofthe bearing. I centered it, and now it runs, still needing a small nudge to start. That ***** though because the new bearings are SKF, direct replacements I don't know if the inner race is slightly larger than the original, as there still must be a slight drag on the bearings.

maybe it might need a drop of oil? i like TriFlo, but maybe it will loosen up with use.

Really nice looking Block and those old lamps shine up great. I noticed there are a couple of Vimco lamps on eBay for big bucks ($100+). I found mine for $50 and thought that was a lot.

That flat with the slot on the right-hand wheel cover must be for mounting something. My guess is the drill bit sharpener.

Now put that thing to work and get it dirty again!

That's the sucking sound! I had to run to garage and make sure my Blocks were still there. Kind of early for water spouts, isn't it? I always thought that took cold air and warm water.

Anyway, great job finding those 3/4hp big boys. What are your plans for them?

Done for now. Still missing one of the work rests, so may just end up fabbing up two new ones. Also, shield glass could stand to be replaced, but I have not found a source for the safety glass. Tried to reuse as many original pieces as possible. New bearings and replaced all the crumbling cloth covered wiring.

Your right those lamps are bringing crazy money........ you may be right about the drill bit sharpener being on that side as I don't recall seeing a picture of them mounted on the other side. .. I think I'm going to put a steel and a brass wire wheels on it. I'm afraid I made it too nice and I'm not going to use it like I should. .lol

Nice job bring that one back to life. I think any glass shop can make replacements. Make sure you get safety glass (laminated). Others have also used Lexan (polycarbonate). Also, the tabs that hold the glass in almost always break. I use a bead of silicone adhesive to hold the glass in.

It's not in the picture, but there was a 2nd one to the left forming/collapsing extending about 1/2 way from the cloud to the horizon.
I always thought that took cold air and warm water.
