I'll play along. I thought I may have payed too much for it[$75], but it seems like a more than fair price looking through here.

Here's a close up of the tag.

Nice addition to the site.

I'd like to identify that replacement switch; I know I've seen one like it before. Maybe on a vintage Tappan stove?

I have no clue, it was as you see it when purchased. I thought the switch wasn't original but it works and the thing is very smooth on start up. I actually wondered if it was even used much. The guy had another but in much worse shape. The wire brush on it was more rust that bristles. I was worried if the brush looked like that, the internals of the grinder may be similar and it wasn't on a stand.

HH;

Nice grinder. I can't comment on eBay prices, I'm luck that there's a plentiful CL supply in metro Detroit.

I suspect this may start you on a quest for it's bigger brothers - 1/2, 3/4, and 1 H.P.!

I/M sent.

Any one in SE Michigan, looking for a little 1/4 H.P. $10 grinder?
Nice, complete [tool rests, wheel covers, eye shields] CM Block grinder. Can't read model number though.

I talked with the seller on Aug 6th, it was available; and it is still listed today Aug 11th.

There's plenty in the Hudson Valley, NY area f/s right now, a few with stands as well. Tried getting a hold of one guy with a 1/2" HP w/ lights and shields to pick up on the way home to no avail...

photoshoped a new label for it?
I have to plead ignorance on how the original was done.

I sent the best, close-up/ straight-on shot to a member on a now defunct forum. I got back three file types (with these extensions: AI, EPS, PNG). I played around with MS-Word until the size was correct and printed it on photo paper, and laminated it to the grinder center band.

I've posted the files several times on this site and others; so, I'm happy to see the label being used.

Heck, I've found a file in this thread of the label in MS-Word, that can be edited; which I'm going to use or try, to get a label for my current project Go-Blue!

I've acquired 3 this year plus a Baldor for $12 and a old Dunlap for $5, so I'm a little bench vise poor right now.

The 1/3 horse came from an estate sale where they had $35 on it and I gentiled them down to $25 so I wouldn't have to fight the half price crowds the day after. It's the cherriest of the three, but they all run and appear to be Emerson motors in there.
The 1/2 horse I got for $11 at a shade tree auction house. It iwl lneed some painting to be presentable.

The 3/4 horse came from a farm auction in Eldora IA. It was mounted on a home made stand with a vise attached to it, a Columbian if I recall correctly. I bailed at $50 and the winner shelled out $90. Once I located him at the end of the auction I asked him if he was interested in the vise or the grinder and he replied "Neither". He was suffering frm buyer's remorse cuz all he wanted was the stand!!. I asked what he'd take for the two items that he didn't want and he said $40 and I couldn't get those 20's out of my pocket fast enough. I think I sold the vise for $30, so the grinder was another "get well" special.

The 3/4 hp is missing the endcap on the right side, but eventually one will show up somewhere. Are either of the light attachments on these "factory"?? Don't see how those old lightbulbs took all that abuse back then....

Check this one out - the grinder is nothing special in itself, but notice the original heart shaped lamp and the cool vintage cast stand.

Any idea how much this one should be worth with stand assuming it runs well? Asking price seems a little steep. Maybe he's been reading this thread.

3/4 commercial 397- model.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/tls/3940742504.html

Thanks

Hmmm I have a buddy in Raleigh...

Grab it before I find his phone number LOL.

I think that price is a reasonable starting point for a 3/4 hp with all the parts and guards and a pretty heavy duty looking stand.

I would say this is very fair if you want to consider this one just popped up local to me.

$100 for a 1/3 hp with a missing shield. I paid $25 for my 1/3 hp with everything intact a couple of weeks ago.

That 397 in Raleigh for $150 is definitely a fair deal. I have interior design customers who would pay that just for the stand.

On the other hand, that 1/3 hp missing one lens and the other one broken is worth about $25 tops

I decided to start refinishing my grinder. It was in really good shape overall, but I feel a nice fresh coat of paint will be good for it. I havent decided on if I will keep it grey or not...have to get some ideas flowing haha.

That is more than a little steep. Being only 1/4 HP I wouldn't pay half that amount. It is great that its NOS but not at that asking price.

I learned a hard but valuable lesson. I decided to do electrolysis to remove some rust and the paint and that caused major pitting in the metal. I only did the main housing this way so it will look as though the grinder was abused. I guess I figured electrolysis wasn't as harmful on softer metals. Completely my fault but it will still look acceptable once it is refinished.

Here is the near final restoration. The color is kona brown and cream. Aside from the crappy pitting that is completely my fault it turned out fairly well. Lesson learned that is for sure.
