Hey guys posted pics of my resto in this thread.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292118

Nice restoration. Here is a link to a picture of your grinder. I like the color combo and the badge. It's the first one I've seen using that badge.

My comments are in Blue.
....

Doc or Tedsters: are you looking at your Craigslist block ads today or i'm guessing it's already in your car?
I talked to the seller 30 mins. after she listed it. I plan on picking it up Tuesday for the next person on the W/W List, if it isn't already sold.

Are the 257s any good? Saw this one for sale

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1432813223.168553.jpg

Yes, here's another, a 1/2HP in Wisconsin.

257.192150

When did they make these? Any good?

00A0A_1pv6jC3aMdj_600x450.jpg

The answer is YES and NO. It depends on the model. On the first one posted, check to see if the case is metal. Towards the end, plastic was starting to come into the design. The good ones are the metal ones.

On the second one posted - RUN AWAY. These are underpowered mostly plastic block-like objects. Only good for light household or hobbycraft grinding.

++ What's already been posted above.

OTOH - That is a good stand, not CM of course, but I have a 1/2-HP Baldor on one like it and it is heavy, stable, and nicely finished. It's worth $50 to me for the stand.

Here's a reality check I had today. I arrived at a sale 5 min. after the Opening time and I was number 63 in line. About 30 mins later, I learned the garage/backyard was separate and no need to wait to be called.

I found what I was after, a nice HD rtop complete Block on a CM stand. LH and maybe RH eye shield glass shattered.
Estate%20sale%20HD%200.75HP%20397.19670%20b.jpg

Closer look, it was a 3/4-HP Commercial Crown Top. I say was, because it was already sold for $100.

You see, I don't count the stand, I have one and it is cool looking but takes up a LOT of precious space with no storage.

So, ~$100 for that grinder in an estate sale and gone in 35 mins. shocked me. Maybe that's the world of estate sales, I have been to less than a dozen; but, that's what I expect for a CL price. Just saying.

This one is a 257.192170 . It's somewhat far from me so I don't know if I will pursue it or not. Waiting to hear back if it's all metal. It looks to be all metal like my flat top.
bagged, that maybe one of the good later 257. models.

From the picture, it looks to have the same q. tray, tool rests, eye shields, and power switch as the 397. models.

The plastic 1/3-HP m-257.190470 Vari Speed I have does not share any P/Ns, even the rubber feet/bushings are different.

Yes it looks like it's similar, but I don't know if I'll be able to make a 2 hour drive to get it.

Doc: sorry for your loss, but if the other stand is worth $50 i'm positive the Craftsman stand is worth at least that much too. so lets see what they are selling for $100.

1) 3/4 HP commercial block maybe 1960's and doesn't look to abused
2) metal eye shields even though the glass is busted
3) metal light seems to be situated nicely and probably works
4) heavy duty water tray and tool rests
5) last but not least the Craftsman metal tool stand that i think also has a shelf

All of these are on my list of the top 10 i'd ask for when looking for and buying a block. maybe a 1 HP, Craftsman original pipe like stand and some attachments and extra wheels and you'd have a perfect block grinder especially with your talent.

now i know it's an estate sale, but since the supply of blocks is almost drained in Michigan i'm not surprised and I'd pay more for that in my area.

again i'm sorry for your loss, but maybe another GJ member grabbed it that also knew what he was buying. Tedsters??

ALL: i'm not a fan of the black plastic blocks and the black metal ones don't have my eye even though i know BCZ bought a NOS 1 HP one a few months ago. Happy hunting and grinding.

 Probably a victim of my own doing.

It's just that I was so close! I would have probably spent the $$ on the grinder and not bought the treasures I did get, which will be posted in a separate thread.

:lol_hitti I was looking for him, but nope, some other lucky duck.

TM, the word is out! When prices go through the roof you can cash in and buy Detroit. :lol_hitti

McB: you didn't help Doc's cause by remodeling the Blockmeister without a BUDGET. how is the new stand working out??

BC: i remembered yours was one of the good black metal 1 HP's, but sorry that look doesn't do it for me if i'm going to start getting rid of some of my Baldors and Daytons. Just curious have you used it yet or does 30-40 year NOS purchases ever get used?

TM: McB has a point that your stock is going up daily as more and more guys and gals read this thread. keep up the good work and i know you are able to move from state to state so there should be a few more in your future just maybe not $20.

Well, I am loathe to say it, but the board member who was going to print my aluminum label has up and vanished, together with my original label, which I sent him for reference, and a thank you gift (a wrench) I sent along with it. I haven't heard from him since March and he hasn't logged in or responded to several PMs and emails since the end of March. He came off as very together and was nice when we communicated. No money changed hands, and he was going to do it as a favor, so I am not necessarily upset on that account; rather, I would have just liked an explanation and to have gotten my label back. I am really surprised and disappointed by how this worked out. It's the first time I have been burned on the board. I hope nothing is wrong with him, but I can only conclude he is checked out for good at this point. So does anyone know a cheap place to get a label printed for my grinder? I have a high quality image all ready to go. :-(

That really *****. Is it the aluminum foil type label? If so just go somewhere that has color laser printers like fedex office. You just need to buy the foil label sheets. My office has a color laser printer so I'm going to attempt it one day. Just need to buy the paper.

Edit: I didn't see the image until now. Were you supposed to get it printed on actual aluminum?

Yeah, he was going to print the label and an on-off switch label on .063 aluminum stock. My label style was riveted onto the center band. The guy said he would also scrounge up some glass for the eye shields.

I keep thinking maybe something bad happened to him, and he has a good reason to be gone for 3 months, but maybe I am just a sucker.

Well that stinks. There isn't much info here, but what about something like this?

I made up for it with the savings from my stand. :lol_hitti

The belt grinder attachment has been getting a bit of a Spring workout sharpening mower blades and gardening tools in the neighborhood. It is really well suited for that stuff. The neighbors are seriously impressed as they should be.

McB: happy to hear you are keeping the neighbors happy with your Blockmeister and stand. that should go a long way towards making you feel better about your investment. you still have the prize for the best block on GJ and just blew past Doc's GO BLUE.

Pend: Jack of the 12 gauge garage had a nice label he printed i think on aluminum or some type of metal so you might do a search of his posts on here or PM him to see if he can make one for you because he offered at one time. he also had a nice customized warning sort of keeping users from winning a Darwin award.

Doc: i feel your pain because i haven't seen a $20 block around here for over a year or two now or a commercial 1/2 HP or bigger one for sale at all during that time. so you can't buy cheap blocks anymore, but the ones you are sending off to members are better values so shipping costs are not as big of a deal.

ALL: anybody put a deburring wheel on their block? care to share a few pictures and some results on anything you shined up?

Yes, I have used it a couple of times. It's just sitting on the bench, not bolted down.

I'm also curious and want to buy a deburring wheel for my 1/2HP 7" grinder. Will a 6" deburring wheel work? Or am I better off using a 6" deburring wheel on my 1/3HP 6" grinder.

Bagged: I'd think a 1/3 HP might not be quite strong enough for a deburring wheel and maybe a 1/2 might not be either. hopefully someone has a deburring wheel laying around to try and tell us.

i clicked on your Dayton ad and it's already been deleted so someone thought the price was ok.

BC: i bet the 1 HP purrs.

.

I have a 3M wheel on a 1/3hp Dayton (Doerr) and it works fine. It's worn down to about 5" so maybe that helps.

Here's a 1968 1/3 HP I just finished. It was missing eye shields so these are from a newer model. New grinding wheel and 1" wide wire wheel. Runs great, like most of them do.
