Does anyone have a chart or something that gives the block HP sizes for the types of work that can be performed on it? Obviously why get more HP than you need but under sizing is even worse.
Here's mine, before and after, bought it at an auction. Love it, I mounted it on my bench and here's the crazy part.... I won't use it for wire brushing rusty stuff, I still use my old Black and Decker for that. Don't want to mess up my paint job. It's a 1/3 HP I guess when I find it's big brother maybe I will.
Also, new to GJ, and amazed by what everybody does and all the knowledge.
Linwood don't feel bad about not using it, I have 2 that I redone last year that I haven't even plugged in because I don't want to dirty them up .....Here's mine, before and after, bought it at an auction. Anyone have a lamp shade for around a 1978 model. Give or take. Both the plastic and metal part.
Or has anyone come up with a good substitution.

Mr One Eye,
If you think about it in terms of Surface Feet per Minute (sfpm), an 8" wheel has a 25% higher sfpm than a 6" wheel. So, in other words, you can get 25% more work done in the same amount of time. And, it takes a bigger motor to swing the bigger wheel. My guess is that a 1/3hp and a 1hp would do the same about the same amount of work with 6" wheels. However, you would struggle bogging down the 1hp.
Craftsman, as well as other makes use these on newer grinders..... Or has anyone come up with a good substitution.

BTW - How did you make out in the search for wheel guard covers? What model number Block?
Cal: where are you located. i've got a complete 1/3 HP i could sell that looks better than that if you can pick it up. PM me for details
I wasn't going to post my grief about this. But since you asked,,,,lol.
Some SOB beat me out of that one. Offered the guy more money I guess. I tried to pay the guy to hold it. Or come get it right then and there. He said no, wait until the week end. He promised he wouldn't sell it.
Now he sent me a message saying it's sold. And now he won't respond.
No integrity I guess. I know money talks. But I feel he should have at least told me he had a better offer and give me a chance. Oh well. I'm over it.
That's the second time I've been beat out of one like that. I'm starting to think it's not meant for me to have one,,,lol.
Now here's where I might be a fool.
I found a nice 3/4 hp model 397.19350. IIRC that's the same as the maroon one you have. But it's very far away. I talked to the guy a long time on the phone. Seemed really nice and legit. My initial thoughts were I have a son that is a truck driver and is in that area every so often. I could have him pick it up.
Here's the foolish part. The guy said he would be in my area in the middle of March and he could bring it. He even drew up a legal looking document assuring me he wouldn't sell it once he received payment, and he would pull the ad. Maybe I'm a fool. Time will tell.
So I'll have it in March or sooner,,,lol.
He said it was his Dads and was used for buffing. So it's got buffing compound all over it and needs a good bath. I think it will clean up though.
Well, how about that for luck. The one 3/4-HP I have seen (own - Maroon & Cream) that has 1/2" arbor and is single voltage.CalsXS2 - I have the same block... here's a close up of the label. Let me know if you need any other details.
TM - good luck with the drop light shields. I had the same plan, but it will take a lot of tweaks to make it fit in the plastic cover... so I have not tackled it yet.

Here's a reminder about the cover/drop light shield fitment "challenge"![]()

The metal shade in my post is an old school trouble light shield with the grate removed. More details in this thread as I also linked to some options for a metal gooseneck and socket. I never got around to trying to make the 2 pieces fit as I found a couple used block lamps that were complete.

Yup, same one that I ordered from Amazon.
Just thinking out loud - I have a CM metal shade that I'll try making a template from thick stock.
Then lay that out on top of the new shade, mark cut lines, and shape it to fit the plastic cover.
OR
Make a shaping buck from the CM shade, trim and beat the new shade into shape.
I figure, I can play around and see if I can cobble something up for at least these 2 Blocks.
So is the plastic cover to keep you from burning yourself
Good find! This was just played on TV and we talk enough about bearings on this thread that I thought that this would be interesting. It's a "How It's Made" episode for ball bearings.

I commend you on your philosophy and look forward to pics. of the next Blocks.
Let's see, there are round tops: 1/4 - 3/4-HP, flat top: 1/4 - 1-HP, pre-Blocks, Industrial Rated, Commercial, HD, ....
Oh, davethorik - yours is the 2nd 1/2-HP m-397.19400 with the quench tray knock-out still in place, seen here recently.

I need your guys expertise.
So I have the 3/4 hp model 397. 19350 on the way. It has a cracked glass, and missing light covers. I have a request into the seller for a better picture of the glass.
I have run across a 1/3 hp model 397.19580 industrial model with good glass I think. I seen this one awhile back but wasn't interested. Has a crappy grey paint job. And they wanted way too much for it. And it's missing the light and quench tray.
I looked up the models on line and the glass has different part numbers. But. Do you guys know from experience if they will interchange.
Torquemans maroon ones glass looks different than my same 3/4 hp model I think. So one of them may have been changed.
I have an offer in for the 1/3 hp, which I made not realizing the light was missing. But I offered $20 and my old china bench grinder. They're going to run it past the boss tomorrow. I'm starting to think I offered too much if all I'm going to get is the glass.
Assuming the glass will interchange, would anyone be interested in this 1/3 as a whole, or need parts off of it.
If the glass won't work I'm not going to get it unless someone can use some parts.
First/top 3 pics are my 3/4. Last/bottom 3 pics are the 1/3 I might get.
The eye shields on the Maroon Cream 3/4-HP m-397.19350 has the eye shields from an older Block.I need your guys expertise.

There are 2 size metal framed eye shields. There is a comparison in the thread in my signature link.
I am 99% certain they will fit a m-397.1935.
