Here is a thread "Craftsman 7' Bench Grinder Tool Rests", on OWWM site.

The poster made his own 2-piece Block tool rests.

Did you try to contact him asking if he was going to sell some. I tried.

Don't take this comment wrong. I'm not knocking the guy at all. He came up with a great fix,,,lol. He didn't actually make them himself. He traded some work with a friend.

Like I said before. I asked him if he was going to sell them. But he has not replied. So I assume he has no interest.

That being said. I'm just thinking out loud here. But I am in machine shop school. And we can make our own projects. I don't need any of these but I think a lot of you guys might.

Not promising anything. But would there be any interest for some of these when I get to the point I could make some.

Thanks, I bought it from you cpl years ago for my son ........
IIRC - It came from a local CL ad a pawn shop listed.

I have replaced more than a couple of those style switches. It's one of the items Sears thrifted. Bad design, compared to what it replaced.

However, it did last several decades. ;)

Sorry, you are having trouble with it.

Please let us know which switch you choose and how it works out.

Hmmm, I'd like a pair.

I also have a project for a part of the HD 3-piece tool rest.

Please PM me, so we can talk about the details.

Thanks!

How about a little pimpin,,,lol.

Someone over on the owwm forum mentioned about a quick lock mechanism for the tool rests.

Here's what I come up with. And there even Craftsman. ;)

That's good re-porpoiseing. :bounce:

I'm trying to recall where I've seen them - CM drill press?

We have to get you a better label. Have you seen the editable Word file in my signature link?

I don't recall if it has the recent posts of nicely done labels, you might want to do a search of the last 4 or so weeks, until I get a chance to check my thread.

Oh, those stones could do with a bit of dressing.

Yep. And I all ready hit Frank up for some. He doesn't have any,,,,lol. I only found 2 on ebay and they want $20 apiece for them. To rich for my blood. And you would need 4. So that makes the whole idea not feasible. Unless you just happen to have a bunch of levers.

I definatly need a label. But I'm waiting until the 18th when my other 3/4 will be here. Then I'll see how nice that label is. I assume I can just switch covers can't I? Then I'm going to sell which ever 3/4 I don't want to keep. I know. Sacrilege,,,,lol.

You should see the other side. Slick like a wet stone. What's your guys favorite dressing method.

Need some input from the Blockhead brain trust...

The time has come to freshen up 2 of my blocks and I need to confirm a couple things related to the bearings. I have seen "6203" mentioned in several resto threads and I assume this size is the common bearing for many of these blocks... mine are 397.19340 and 397.19350.

Also need to clarify which style bearing puller I will need.

Thanks in advance!

They are common. TM has links to resources in his sig line. They were originally shielded bearings with the metal covers, but you can also use sealed bearings with the plastic/rubber covers. I was told at a bearing supplier that at 3650 rpm, it doesn't matter. I have never needed a bearing puller. They are a press fit, but not a very tight one. Post pics when you are done with the resto.

Matt,

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. You grinder looks 50 years old ;), but will clean up nicely. Start by reading through the links in Torqueman's signature line. He has some recent posts. Looks like you might need glass for your eyeshields. Make sure you get laminated safety glass. You could probably use a new set of bearings too. Other than that, you can use it as is. Or, strip it down, repaint it, and make it look like new. There are plenty of examples of restorations in this thread.

A simple 3-jaw puller with at least 6" of throw will work nicely. I have had to use that approach once or twice.

My favorite Block bearings are Nachi 6203 double-sealed. This is an Amazon link, you can probably find them a bit cheaper elsewhere.

So I started to mod a metal lamp shade. This was just an old drop light that I got at the flea market for $1. But it looks very similar to the one you can get on amazon.

Obviously the over all length is too long. And it's too wide at the back. Also you will have to re-drill the hole where it clamps around the socket as this shade is for a larger diameter.

20160304_110340_zpsdbvwxams.jpg

I cut it in half with an angle grinder. I used a ridge line to keep the cut straight. You may be able to do all the cutting with tin snips. But someone has borrowed mine.
20160304_110352_zpshg41tnfc.jpg

The 2 pieces tucked together.
20160304_110454_zpsfl3l8vni.jpg

Inside of the plastic cover. Like I said. I do not have any tin snips right now so this is just a rough in.

I think this would be easier if you have an original to copy off of. But it's just a matter of cut and fit.

So you guys go order you some parts and start choppin.

I agree with McBrownie ^^. I'll just add my two blue cents, below.

Welcome to the GJ forum and the Block grinder thread!
I like to go through the consumables, like electrics:

  • power cord
  • power switch
  • connectors/terminals
  • capacitor (AKA condenser) (I don't think your model will have 1)
  • relay

Need some input from the Blockhead brain trust...

The time has come to freshen up 2 of my blocks and I need to confirm a couple things related to the bearings. I have seen "6203" mentioned in several resto threads and I assume this size is the common bearing for many of these blocks... mine are 397.19340 and 397.19350.NTN 6203ZZC3/L103 $8.77
On the 1/2" arbor Blocks I've done, the OEM bearings were ND 77503 17mm x 40mm x 12mm
I used NTN 6203ZZC3/L103 $8.77.
What you ordered are fine.

Also need to clarify which style bearing puller I will need.
Before I got a bearing splitter, I used the open jaws of a vise, with soft jaw inserts.

Place the arbor with bearing and retaining nut up, in the vise so the bearing inner race rests on top of the vice jaws.

Note: You want the arbor shaft to 'drop' through the bearing and leave the bearing on top of the jaws. The retaining nut will keep the arbor from dropping through the bearing and hitting the floor. The retaining nut is also used to protect the arbor threads.
Caution: Do NOT hammer on the end of the arbor without the nut covering the threads and the end of the arbor!
Caution: Insure the arbor is NOT held in the jaws

With a soft faced hammer, gently hit the retaining nut - driving the arbor downward.

I do have a thread showing this method and using a puller & splitter, I'll look for them and post them here.

Thanks in advance!

Mattjphx: great find. how does it run now? plenty of advice here if you need some and ask politely. my guess is your will run another 10 years as is, but some of the guys here clean theirs up nice enough and they run smooth enough to sit on the kitchen counter if they had the back ports and a shop vac hooked up to them.

RP: great find on the 1/2 HP commercial block. how's it run?

DOC: just an FYI. I've always loved your posts where you put your posts in BLUE, but since I read them on my cell phone now and again the color isn't there on cell phones. at least my HTC Windows phone. so a solution might be to either bold, italic or cap your posts and coloring them blue still works for us when we are on our laptop or desk tops. thanks for all you do to make this a great thread and a place for all of us to go to get some information about these great old tools.

I saw a 1/3 HP model at an estate sale for 30 bucks. He used it as a buffer, so It was missing the shields, wheel covers and tool rests. I was going to buy it, but he ran the power cord through the top of the counter and behind to the outlet. I would've had to cut the cord to get it.

Cords are cheap and usually need replacing anyway...

I often use old PC power cords (the ones off servers) and those work great (and are free)

That is BADASS!

Did you guys even know there was such a thing. I didn't.

Man. I aint ready through 400 pages to see if there's another one,,,lol. Can't ya just tell me. :D

And it's like brand new. Not bad for a 1977.

You guys think the sander is gimmicky. I wonder if it would put a lot of pressure on the bearings. Maybe it's a bad design and they didn't make many. Or did they,,,lol. Why aint I seen one before.
not even the model number shows up on google. But it is on searsdirect.

Cal: pretty sure there are few on here, but I haven't read the entire thread in a while and going from memory. maybe DOC knows for sure. McB took that design a bit farther with the Blockmeister. have you seen McB's little $500 block grinder?

Doc: now the bold shows your posts inside old posts, but still not blue on my cell phone. funny because the links come up blue. thanks for changing it and helping me and maybe a few other members because you always have great comments that might get lost in the old posts of the members you are helping.

There is another one of those attachments on here somewhere along with a dimensioned drawing (just in case anyone wanted to to make their own). It's a great idea for a grinder missing a wheel guard.

Cal, your Sanding attachment from the 76-77 catalog:

Do you have that catalog. I wonder if it would fit a 3/4.

If you notice mine was not a add on. It came made that way. Notice the label.
