I am picking up a 1/3 HP block grinder this evening. It is complete with light, guards, and quench tray. I have a 1/2 HP that is missing a few things like the guards. Are parts interchangeable between the 2?

I might have some 1/2 hp parts. I'm trying to clean out my garage. Let me know exactly what you need and I'll look to see if I can help you.

And you haven't jumped all over that? :wtf:

:p

Actually, if the make of the motor was known, It might be worth getting it for that...

If I was nearby, I would buy it just to salvage the motor and get that dangerous piece of equipment off the market. Have you guys seen pics of the horrible injuries inflicted by exploding grinding wheels? Some poor ******* that doesn't know any better might buy that thing, use it to sharpen something and end up in a world of hurt.

Not much to add lately, but I thought I'd put this here for laughs. Maybe it belongs in the WTF thread, though.

How many :yikes: do you see?

The CL ad is only 11 min. old right now, and the ask is $10.
http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/tls/5665635627.html

You know, compared to the one my Dad cobbled together, that one is nearly OSHA approved...

Two of the cheapest "pillow blocks" you ever saw (bicycle quality exposed ball bearings - you had to oil them...), bolted to a 4X4, notched for the belt/drive pulley, and a 1/4 HP motor about as old as the one shown, NO tool rest, and a grinding wheel on the left, and a buffing wheel on the right.

All bench-top mounted with the belt exposed.... exposed 2 wire un-grounded (Early) Romex to a light switch in a box, and plugged in after that, (still Romex ...)

You could hear that thing run all over the house, the bearings were so loose and rumbling...

That sucker was still in use through my HS years... I finally took it out.

I see similar at yard sales from time to time...

I finally wrapped up a Grinder Pedestal graciously sold to me by JZiggy.

The stand as she arrived:

I did not have enough Evaporust for the base and stand so just soaked the set screws (note, dont use a plastic bag. Evapo did not eat it but it did leave the bag VERY soft after 24hrs)
20160619_094311.jpg

Screws straight out of the Evaporust.

I always use HF paint strainers to strain the evapo solution back into the bottle. Been using the same bottle for over a year with barely any loss of strength.

I wire wheeled and scrubbed these both but the casting had so many pits it was impossible to get them rid of all signs of rust. I coated them with Rust Reformer and hope that helps.

Final stand. Bases are Hammer Gray and the column is High Heat black enamel (what I had on hand). I will eventually do the same color scheme on the 1/4th horse block sitting atop it.

Picked this up. Just needs a quick cleaning before I sell it. I might repaint the center cover.

Has anyone designed the label for the 3/4 hp commercial? Looked through all the resources and didn't see it. Restoring one of mine and need a new label. If someone ordered a page of them and can sell one to me, even better. Thanks!

I got this label cleaned up nicely with a quick wipe with simple green. Has anyone successfully removed the label and reapplied it? Let me know how if you have.

So I think this is my ideal Grinder, but this guy's asking twice what I'm willing to pay. Late 50's and gorgeous!

http://newjersey.craigslist.org/tls/5549113340.html

2 and a half months later, he finally settled on my offer! Brought it home tonight!

This thing is a beast! Starts right up, takes over a minute to spool down. AND, didn't have it bolted down and it barely vibrated at all!

One thing I noticed, it only has rear mounting bolt holes. Gotta see if they match up to a pedestal... otherwise I'll make an adapter plate!

Another kind buddy of mine picked this up for me. Yay minions!

Also, I went to a different Lowe's and hit the jackpot (and I only took half of what was crammed in the grommet drawer):

Started restoration on this yesterday and I'm almost done. Was in pretty good shape but a lot of paint splatter.

Tried to save the label, but when you reapply it, some areas got stretched and it won't lay flat. So I have the label designed using the file on the "what's all the fuss" page. Just need to find the right sticky paper to print it on.

Went with hammered silver because that's what I have. I will apply the label and then apart clear over the whole grinder.

Everything was cleaned and scuffed up with 80 grit before painting. This pic is after I started spraying.

Got hammered gray sprayed and in the oven seconds before the rain started.

Light flex pole all cleaned up.

Just need to paint the other pieces for the light, get the label, and reassemble. Now I will definitely have to restore my other grinders that I've been putting off.

Here is the designed label. Just need to have it printed nicely. Anyone have any suggestions on sticky photo paper?

Wow! It came out amazing! I printed 4 on a page just in case. Used my inkjet printer using the setting for glossy paper and high quality setting.
Now the hard part of cutting one out without messing it up.

Wow very nice!!! Gives me high hopes- I've got a higher end Epson photographers printer so hopefully it will come out good. May be a good excuse to get a better paper slicer.

Oh yeah- my wife has a Silhouette vinyl cutting machine. Have my cutting solution [emoji3]

I saw one of those at Michaels. I want one but not for $300.

I need to find some type of clear film to go over the top of the label. I noticed any water on this paper causes issues.

Oh that's too bad. Since they show it to be used on canned goods and such- too bad that there's no shielding on top. They have a clear film of the same stuff- might work.

Yeah I think staples sells clear film that will work.

The colors are almost a perfect match to the original.

I ended up using one coat of rustoleum clear to make it look good. 2 coats make it look like orange peel. I also tried krylon clear made for uv protection and photographs but it was no good.
