There is a 1/2HP in Boulder, CO sitting at $35. Missing one tool rest and eye shield, but otherwise looks pretty sweet. Been up for at least 2 weeks.

Thanks torqueman for the EPS file of the label design. That had a good layout of the craftsman and Sears logo but the rest didn't exactly match my grinder so I carefully peeled the old label off (heated up a bit with a heat gun in order to pull it apart in one piece). Then I scanned it and used the scan as a template to recreate the layout. I've done this a few times so only about 30 minutes design time. You can use adobe illustrator for this or any other vector program. Vector is best because it is editable and perfectly smooth at any output resolution or size. I used a professional grade sign making software called FlexiSIGN as I'm expert in it and can draw very efficiently. Also used a digital caliper to take measurements of the text to get the most accurate sizing.
At work we have a large format solvent printer cutter that can print and cut out he design. I printed in a calendared pvc film that was gray metallic then applied a clear lamination for scratch and chemical resistance.
Here it is coming off the printer.
It's a MIMAKI CJV150 unit made in Japan.
And here is final label on the newly painted steel. It's a silver metallic paint. The rest is semi flat black. I'll post some more photos once assembled (bearings should arrive in a day or two)
You can see a couple air bubbles which will dissipate is a few days or more quickly if I put it out in the sun.
Here's before and after side by side.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I just need to know the hp rating of your grinder. I am doing a cleanup of a 1/3hp pre-block and when I removed the center sheet metal I gasped at how big the motor structure was. I don't have detailed measurements, but offhand the diameter of the stack is 6 inches and thickness is 2 inches. That compares to your stack of (approx) 5 dia x 1.5 thick. Huge difference!
I think I am going to look further into this and try to see why there is little love for the cast iron pre-blocks. They seem like heavy duty machines, much more substantial than the the later die-cast aluminum blocks....

There's a 1 HP block grinder on Ebay in Staples, MN for $100 OBO. I had been trying to find somebody close enough to make financial sense to pay them to pick it up and ship it on top of the price. I've come to the conclusion that it's not going to happen, and would rather a GJ member have a crack at it.
The seller is dead set on not shipping the item, the pickup schedule is fairly rigid, and there's a lot of terms / conditions in the auction that should be read (such as MN sales tax). But hey, it's a 1 HP block for < $100, if you're close.

Merc: those 1hp's don't come up often and since you are in the rainy season in LA now maybe a road trip is in order if you can find a few other things on the way there and back?
ALL: so does anybody have a grinding wheel like this one? to me it looks dangerous and I was told it cost $150. if it was me i'd put $150 towards a good belt sander, but maybe i don't have a clue what this does.
also for those of you that might want to use your tools a little safer i started up a SAFETY 101 thread where you can learn and of course share you tips to staying safe and healthy and here's the link.

Still need to put on a set of runner feet and to clean up the tool rests and quench tray. Plus I need to get a set of eyeshields.
And stand ended up selling for $150 so this grinder was less than free!

I agree with ex. Get some new stones. That's a lot of power to putting into old aluminum-clogged wheels.
This one's HP rating is 1/2 HP. This one is the aluminum variety you mentioned; and you're correct, the older ones ( I have a couple of 1/3 HP ones from the mid 1960s) are heavier.
This has probably been done to death, but where is everyone getting their replacement labels from, such as Matt four posts above? The grinder I'm working on now was outdoors and the label is badly faded now.
Do I understand correctly, and there are printing services that allow you to print these to a metallic badge material?

I made them myself. Helps to have access to professional sign shop equipment. I print on adhesive backed silver vinyl then add a clear over lamination.

This was a 160 miles away from me. But the temptation got the best of me and I made an offer of $85 in the last day. The next morning my offer was accepted!
Picked it up this AM. It was a long drive, but I stopped at the Camp Ripley Military Museum to help offset the gas money. Well worth the stop.
She spins up fine and takes forever to wind down. And it has the rubber feet to boot.
Not like the deal WWShop managed, but 1HP blocks are hard to find.
Here is a pic as I got it, and after a real quick dust off:

There are safety concerns with vitrified grinding stones that are not stored properly.
If they are exposed to damp/wet conditions [ie: damp basement/garage, ...], they can disintegrate with explosive force.
For about $10/ea, I find peace of mind to toss any unknown stone and replace with new.

I have been know to drive 6 hours for a Block.Nice find!!! Sometimes its nice to take a little drive, especially when there is a block at the end of the journey!
But then, my brother is a great host and central NY is beautiful.

Blue: your wheel might be ok, but like DOC said please make sure because a flying exploding stone can kill you.
here's a YouTube video of a ring test to check it out and if it does that might mean it's still usable.
EX: we might be NUTS as you say, but it's a helluva an excuse to see some pretty nice parts of our country. i picked up some metal bins this last weekend and my wife joined me to eat at a little restaurant below this picture i took where the big sailboats were out just chilling in Puget Sound. also the $15-20 ferry rides when you get front row are not too bad either instead of just driving and burning up gas.
i've driven 12 hours to pick up a few vises and grinders and other tools and always came home smiling.
