I picked up this little but stout 1/4 HP one this week; I believe its a bit older than the rest I have (is that a 12-55 date on the front?). It doesn't appear to have come with side shields as there is no where to mount them, nor a quench tray. I was comparing it to the later model 1/3 HP one that I had sitting around; similar in size and shape, but the older one is noticeably heavier when you pick it up. Spins up smooth and seems to be in good shape, other than the cord needing to be replaced.

I'm trying to decide which one to keep for a brass brush and polishing wheel setup. Maybe both? :)

They should both work fine. The old one is cast iron rather then aluminum and is quite a bit harder to find. The amp difference is probably minimal.

That is bobioz1 setup so I'm not sure. I've seen 3 grinders on proper pedestals this week so don't give up.

lafester shortly after you posted "don't give up" I once again checked my local craigslist, and could not believe my old eyes. The posting was 1 hour old. Made arrangements to pick it up this morning first thing. Here is a photo. It's missing a few things like the eye protection, right wheel cover quenching, tray etc., but it runs fine. I really wanted it for the pedestal as I have a mint 1/3 horse already. I'll keep checking for E-bay for parts. So I am a happy camper.

Lafester you have the knack I was wondering if you could PM me the lottery numbers for this evening

No. Just the snap ring and inner collar that came on the grinder I believe. I’ll have to take a closer look at it. It’s been mounted on 2 different grinders this way and works well. I do think a trued up shaft collar is a good idea though.

A 17mm shaft collar is much more accurate than the snap ring. For a few bucks, it makes truing up the wheels much easier. I use a dial indicator and snip up of pieces soda cans or aluminum foil for shims. I'm not a big fan of grinders walking across the shop by themselves. :)

Anyone know where to get parts - need 1 tool rest and 1 look thru window

Just found this one... tool rests look different but maybe they will work?

PM for link and discuss details if you are interested. If it had the eye shields I would probably grab it.

I suppose this has been posted before but this just popped up for sale.
Very tempted to grab it but it's kind of pricey... but none of these sharpening sets are cheap. Sure looks like a block with a belsaw label.

Just looked around and see they have been using blocks for a long time... very nice

Mine is a Dayton. Palmgren sells one that looks the same too.
Actually Sears (Craftsman) was a customer for these grinders and did not make them for anybody, not even Sears. The ones whose part number begins 257 were made by Paramount Alleghretti/Poulan, now part of the Husqvarna group. The ones starting 397 were made by Delco. Dayton is a house brand of W.W. Grainger. Palgren is owned by Hansen. They all buy stuff and slap their name on it

That's the stand I'm looking at with the 1/2 hp commercial I posted a couple days ago. Currently trying to get the price down to a realistic number.

Looks like the column is a bit fatter then the standard pedestal. That's too bad as I wanted to pull the quench tray off and use it on my double.

Ok so help me out on the value of this one. I don't want to lowball but not going to pay ebay prices either.

Laf: i've paid up for those round top commercial 1/2 HP's so probably over a benjamin and less than 2 of them would be my guess, but depends on how much inventory you have in your area. if it had the metal shields i'd probably buy it or one like it cause its one of my favorite models.

Gold: i've yet to find a 3/4 round top near me especially with the stout base, water tray and tool rests. nice find and i bet it will last a lifetime with a little care. nice find!!

ALL: while i'm organizing i'm setting up a small woodshop in the back of my 85 year old parent's garage and these stands are pretty sturdy and easy to move around, but i'm still hoping to have a hitch mounted system some day like this. here's a link to the vise and grinder stand thread in case any of you need a few more ideas on stands or want to post yours:

I have metal/glass shields for it if I get it..
With the distance involved I'm shooting for somewhere less then $150.

I have not seen any round top for sale over 1/3 hp except one at an auction. The flat tops are much more common.

You can do it!

Picked up this one today for $50. If I don't get the round top version this will take over my 1/2 hp spot. Only missing the shields and pretty sure the light socket has been replaced.

I like the industrial switch and cap start though...

Couple pics from setting up the new 1/2 hp.

Moved the multi tool over to check out it's performance.
Seems to run great!

Gold: not sure anybody is making them at the moment, but maybe somebody else will see your post that knows who or that is making them. I think one member either was and died or just took member's funds and went on vacation so make sure you get a good vibe before sending a Paypal or cash to the person you find.

Laf: great idea using the original Craftsman planer stand for your BLOCKMEISTER II. if you have the room to put extensions on the buffer side I would unless you don't need more access to the wheel.

Blockmeister II lol. Maybe if I ever find a block worthy of the name I will do a full restore on it. These are actually lathe pedestals but could easily be used for a jointer, and probably were in many cases.

Lafester,

I looks great! I've had mine for a few years and, while I still like the belts, I do find that I use the side wheel more often. I did get the side table. HOWEVER, like everything Multitool, I had to put in better bolts to make it secure. With the original hardware, the table was always moving off of 90 degrees. Bottom line is that I like the side table and miter gage and use them a lot, but be prepared to do some tweaking to get it working right if you decide to get one.

Thanks! I don't see spending $70+ for a table but maybe one will turn up someday. I like the big sturdy table on my 6 in sander so I will continue to use that most of the time. I do wish it had an easy way to add a rest/guide on the belt.

Today, I made it to the flea market earlier than usual. Thinking that I would have to wait for some vendors to show up, I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout. Almost straight away, I came across this Craftsman 1/3hp grinder which I promptly snapped up for the sum of $15. Not too pretty, but it runs great!

Dated Feb 22 1965 on the bottom.

Anyone near Waco, TX interested in this 1/2HP? Surface rust detracts from the appeal, but all guards & shields appear to be in place.

They're asking $50

Lurker here...I bought this one, actually had this thread tagged for reference and was like "hey, that's my grinder!"

Runs great! Now to just add it to my yet to be restored craftsman bandsaw and 60s atlas drill press.

ETA: It's dated Dec 12 1973.

Lurker here...I bought this one, actually had this thread tagged for reference and was like "hey, that's my grinder!"

Runs great! Now to just add it to my yet to be restored craftsman bandsaw and 60s atlas drill press.

ETA: It's dated Dec 12 1973.

Could you take of one of the side guards and take a look at the flange? I just got this same model and it has some very heavy duty flanges that don't look stock. I'll post a pic in a few.

Mine is Dec 18 1974.
