That's a nice one! The last model before they went to the crappy plastic switch, and then to the flat top. I would keep a look out for a cheap 1/3 hp with glass shields to get rid of some more plastic. This one did have glass the year before according to the catalogs.

I picked this up at an auction over the weekend. My wife gave me "the look" when I bid $50 for it, but she forgave me later. I really wanted an older round top over the more squared version. I've seen several newer ones, but most had led a hard life. This one spent its life sharpening tools in a woodworker's shop. I used Novus plastic polish on the eye shields(I have both) and lamp shade then wiped the sawdust off of it. She runs like a champ and so much quieter than my 40 year old Tawainese one.

That was my one complaint about this one. Well that and no stand or 6 more just like it. I'll keep an eye out for the glass shields. I see the 1/3 hp fairly frequently, but they are usually missing everything not required to run.

I didn't feel like going back endless pages of this thread to find the answer to my question so here goes? When do you guys know when to replace the bearings on these? I heard that if a grinder takes a long time to wind down, its because the grease is drying out and bearings need replacing. Any insight?

All things equal (HP, size of wheel/stone, wind direction, phase of the moon, ...) a new bearing will tend to have more 'drag' due to the grease.

What I check when buying a Block grinder is the end play/sloppiness of the arbor. I'm not sure why, I haven't bought 1 that has any.

Then I stand to the side and turn it on, never in front of the grinder when starting. This is just a precaution, in case the vitrified material has been damaged and comes apart.

I've brought home a few Blocks, most here would say more than my share LOL. Some hardly used, others that were sad, sad looking Blocks.

They are all worth rescuing IMO. So, I almost always clean them up, tear them down, replace the consumables (bearings, stones, wire wheels ...) inspect/clean/repair electrical, and finally paint and re-assemble.

Oh, then I use them; or, give them to friends/relatives. I've sold a few also.

IMO, the bearings are not expensive or hard to replace. So, why not replace them?

Be sure to post up pictures as your restore progresses.

PS - Does anyone know why I'm suddenly getting double spacing, when I hit enter?

Like this? :headscrat

I'm a big fan of changing them out. Bearings are a wear item and after 40+ years it makes sense to change them. Sealed bearings (6203) are better than shielded. A good pair can be had for less than $20 and take less than an hour to do. Less than 30 minutes if you've done them before. Then you're good for another 10 years.

I saw this on eBay and had dreams of mounting two blocks. I believe the stand is for a Craftsman lathe.

I got one with a grinder attached and one with a lathe attached.
All the jointer ones I have seen have had the custom fitted mounts.

They do not pop up very often though.

Finally got this over the weekend. My FIL picked it up for me and hung on to it until we were visiting again. Pulled the bottom cover and found one of the leads on the relay was disconnected. Hooked it up and it works. Everything feels pretty solid, although I might still do the bearings on it, we'll see. It's definitely going to get new paint and a new label, in addition to new paint.

Also, can someone tell me if all the stands for this style fit? For example, would the stand off a 1/2 hp of the same vintage fit the 1 hp model?

Greg

Should I take the risk? I think I'll be able to get it for $20. It's a 1hp model.

Here's what he said:

Have you guys found a good wire wheel to use with a block grinder? I have a 1960's 1/2 hp commercial that runs nice and smooth with two original stones on it. I installed a Weiler USA made 7" brush (1" wide) this weekend and it vibrates terrible. I used a machined steel arbor adapter (5/8 to 1/2) with very tight tolerances. The brush itself seems to have a lot of run out?

I did notice that the large flat mounting plates make contact near the arbor of the brush rather than further out like they do on the stone. The brush also seems to sit slightly further in board than the stone does (more threads showing after nut is installed). I'm thinking this may impact the balance, or perhaps the weight difference of a brush on one side and a wheel on the other?

I wasn't comfortable with the vibration, so I pulled the brush back off for now. Any suggestions on other brushes that work well? Is 3450 rpm just too fast for a wire brush?

Just got this put back together tonight. My first restoration of the block grinder. I like the way it turned out. I think I’m going to put wire wheels on this to use for dirt bike parts etc.
the one question I have is what are those rivet deals called or where do I find them to hold the name badge on? I saw them in a read at one time and have not been able to find them again.

For the bearings on my grinder, do I press them off, and then simply use a set of calipers to record the measurements and then head on to Grainger to order some in the same spec?

I've got my 1HP unit all apart. One of the bearings felt loose when wiggled by hand, so I'm just going to replace them while it's apart.

I put a buffer wheel on mine. It throws off threads but has proved itself pretty handy already.

I was surprised no one went for it.. there were several Tool buyers/flippers in front of me bragging about how they buy up all the craftsman stuff they can find. : ) It is missing the shields but other than that all there. I needed a pedestal for the 1 HP I got last year! but not sure If I wanna take this one off. thanks! Both 30 model A's. Coupe chopped 4 and a pickup mocked up beginning stages.

Picked up this one on Thursday at an estate sale. Nice clean one that lived most of its life inside a wood workshop. I bought it to use the pedestal on another 1/3hp block I have, so I'll be selling this one. Even came with the owners manual! :)

What are those metal plates with the slotted holes (just above each wheel) for? Dust shield? Just noticed my 1/4 hp doesn't have them.

I looked at two grinders today. The 1/4hp has a riveted label, and that’s about it. The 1/3hp has cheap-looking plastic shields, a cheap-feeling plastic switch, worn down wheels, and the stick-on kind of label. On the upside, it also has the flex-neck lamp, and the sellers says it runs good. Asking $25. I don’t think it’s going anywhere any time soon, so thought I’d keep an eye out for a 1/2hp. I’ll probably get another shot at it in two weeks.
Thoughts?

Personally I would wait for something a bit better unless one of those is on a pedestal.

Not sure what to think.

I bought a Weiler also and had issues with it being out of balance; it would cause the whole grinder to vibrate. I switched it out with a Walter brand wheel and it runs perfectly smooth. It does have some wires on that side that "cleaned up" some areas on my grinder as well. I should take the time and trim off of the ones that are sticking out. At least it runs smoothly now.
