I finished up my 1/2hp. i havent quite decided what its ultimate use is. I will probably go with that multitool sander I've seen on this page. Does anyone know if it is a direct bolt on or require some fabrication????

Im not sure about the other side. Maybe a wire wheel? I have a 3/4hp Baldor for actual grinding. I really only bought this because of the bad infulences on this site. It will get put to use. I committed sacrilege and used a non standard color that another member used way back in the early pages. Its the rustoleum light blue. The cooling tray and eye shields are still getting touched up but I have them.
V nice job!

I went to pick up an old metal butcher table from a work friend which still had his stuff all over it. I asked if he cared about any of the stuff, and if he wanted the grinder. Told me to just load it up with the table.
I have so far put on a new DeWalt 8-in wheel and wire wheel. Light bulb housing is loose, but everything works. Been using it along with my Wen Sander to restore old tools and build combat robots.
That's surely a YOU ****!

Just picked this one up at a storage locker for $30. More of an upgrade than I expected from my newer craftsman model. Twice the power and easily half the vibration.

Also picked up two Disston back saws that I happen to see casually laying off to the side. Was a great day.

You're crazy setting that rusty pile of junk on the front seat of your Silverado.

Just kidding! I like to check out and admire my vintage tool and vise finds on the way home too!

Big suckage there. Nice score.

It was heavy enough to set off the seatbelt sensor the whole way home

So casual!
Both are pre-1918.
That shorter saw is cool. The handle indicates an UNCOMMONLY FOUND no.9, maybe 10”? No.9s came out around 1874 and should have a toe that extends beyond the spine. Maybe this one was modified.

Out of my usual territory this weekend. Stopped at two Lowes and finally found enough grommets in stock for two grinders’ feet. Maybe my hometown Lowes just doesn’t know which bin they go in. There are conflicting labels in the “hard to find” drawers.
Tomorrow I’m going to be in the vicinity of a pixelated shadow in a CL ad for a garage sale that ended Wednesday. If the place is open, I’ll check it out.

A Lowe's near me was closing, so i went in to see what was left on the last day of their clearance sale. Pretty slim pickings, but everything was 90% off. I picked up 20 of the rubber grommets for $0.10 each. Why did I buy that many? I'm still wondering...

That is a great deal, if the stand is a CI Sears and the quench/cooling tray, eye shields, tool rests, spark arresters are included.

Or, if you want to start collecting other Blocks for missing parts, like I've done. :lol_hitti

Picked this up today at a nearby second hand/ pawn store. I would have preferred an older one, but for $27.50 I couldn't pass it up. Seems pretty clean with the exception of the plastic shields have touched the wheels and no quench tray. May be making a little bearing noise, but might have just been vibration from the way it was sitting. No date stamp. Has a Craftsman 60 grit wheel on the right, and Craftsman 36 grit wheel on the left. When ever I can find the time it needs a good clean up. Seems like all I do is werk.

I have a couple questions. It looks like there is a hole for a set screw where the socket attaches to the flexible goose neck. Should there be a set screw there, and if so, what size is it? Are there new eye shields available for these? What about a quench tray?

If you mean this type of set screw, I don’t think it’s critical, nor particularly hard to source, if you want to add it. If you do decide to add one, don’t overtighten it, because you may strip the aluminum threads.
I’d guess the decision of a lamp designer, whether to use the screw-on base with a set screw or one without, has to do with the style and radius of lampshade. The ones with a harp and capnut could unscrew the base, especially if there isn’t a jam nut under it, and in presumed idiocy, the owner kept spinning the lampshade counterclockwise. Eventually, the wires would abraid their insulation and the lamp would short, potentially causing shock or even fire. I HAVE seen lamps in that condition, so there ARE idiots out there.
Neither of my grinders’ lamps has a hole for a set screw. In fact, I don’t think any lamp in my house has that type base. I went into a thrift store, where the whole lamp is $2, to take these pics. First two have screws, last has no hole.
I’d further guess yours has a threaded hole because that’s what came off the supply truck the day yours was assembled. Or maybe it’s a replacement. Or, maybe they all had them that year.

Don't see too many grey pedestals around... let alone doubles.
Seems like they quickly went to the power bronze and then black.

Picked this one up today along with a crusty lathe.

Is that double pedestal the same height as a single? Seems like a lathe might need a different stand height than a grinder :dunno:

I believe the height is the same, although I must admit I only had a single for a very short time before moving to a double. If there is a difference it is minor.

You can do side by side for small work, angled out for larger and back to back if you need full clearance. You could also mount a table and configure outboard rests/clamps etc.

From "sears-craftsman-1959-power" catalogue:

Grinder stand, 34" high.

Joiner double pole stand, 31" high.

IIRC, the catalogue(s) are available at OWWM.

Picked up this bad boy for $45 yesterday! All parts are there, with stand. Even got the original wheel the PO had replaced with wire.

Urgh...it's even cleaner in the above pics than the pics you texted me yesterday. It just needs a nice sponge bath and you're in business.
Nice!
Is that the highly coveted factory stand?

I saw it hiding in the estate sale pics, but didn't know where it was. The garage was open and it didn't look right, so I headed for the shed as 5th in line.......first 4 gents went for the garage. I missed out on a bunch of tools but got the grinder. Now I only need the 3/4hp to complete "the family!"
