I just got one! I’ve been wanting one of these for a long time. Anyone have an extra shield or lamp shield?

Found another one. With the stand.
That makes four 1HP grinders this month.

I'm impressed RP! nice work! Did you use heat to make the bends, or do you have benders/brake for that heavy of material?

I am a sheetmetal worker and work in a custom fab shop. We also specialize in heavy industrial, and blowpipe work.
We have two large punch presses with a crazy amount of tooling. Including louver dies. That is how I punched the slots.

We also have 5 press brakes.

If anyone needs tool rests for their 3/4hp, or 1hp grinders. I made 4 extra sets when I made mine. Just as easy to make multiple when making one.
I will sell them for $50 per set. That price includes shipping.

Broken light shield, broken eye shield. $50 only if you can’t walk away. I’d say $40 in the Chicago area. FWIW, those are the crappiest eye shields Sears ever used, and I’d replace them with better ones.

That's my target price - $10 per 0.10-HP, deduct for broken/missing parts add for location/location/location.

I'd offer $35 if it's been for sale longer than a few days, and accept $45 as a good deal (not a great/you **** deal, though).

Finally got around to setting up the Multitool attachment. Also drilled and tapped the guards on the grinder for the tool rests that I made.
This grinder had a deluxe base at one time. As the guards were never drilled and tapped for rests.
This is the first belt grinder I have had that has a light. I am really liking it.
As far as the spacer to make the attachment fit this grinder. I had a friend of mine. Waterjet the spacer out of a piece of 1” thick aluminum. I found no need for a 17mm shaft collar. I just used a thick 5/8” washer against the snap ring. I am getting no noticeable runout. Runs like a dream. Really liking this set up.

Reverse,

Nice job on the adapter. What do you have planned for 1h.p. block grinders #5&6?? I am sure you have a lead on them by now lol.

Hahahaha
I need more bench grinders like I need a hole in the head.
But at the price I am getting them for. They are like having money in the bank.

I used this grinder regularly in the mid to late 70s, including rebuilding my first non-hand-me-down motorcycle and car. When my father passed and Mom moved back to AZ I inherited the grinder, but by then it was in really bad shape. Once I had a garage of my own I intended to buy a new grinder so the old one went into the remodel trash heap I had amassed in the side yard. After some financial troubles I decided to try resurrecting the old one in spite of the heavy use and sitting outdoors for many years and performed a complete restoration. Most of the side plate screws were gone, the clear shields were unusable, and the flex shaft was corroded, but I found enough matching screws in my parts, abandoned the shields, and once I got the grinder running again I was able to clean up the flex shaft and replaced the socket. Fortunately the hood was intact and only needed a light sanding and paint. I chose the red color to match my other Craftsman tools (RIP Craftsman) and thought black would be a nice contrast. I've gotten many years of use since the restoration, to the point it's due for a refresh on the paint and a new set of wheels. I'll keep the red, but am considering a black or charcoal hammer finish for the main body.

nice job. I’m waiting to get a multitool attachment for one of my grinders. I feel it’s more useful than a grinding stone unless you are grinding lathe tooling.

About that multitool attachment, I have a third grinder I was considering getting rid of, it's a lightweight newer CM. I could see a lot of use out of this attachment, do they need extra power or will the little Craftman be enough? My other two are a CM block and a Baldor but they will stay as they are.

Belt grinders with contact wheels can handle a lot of power since you are not squeezing the belt against a platen and generating lots of friction (heat). I can tell you a 1/2hp Baldor grinder is marginal if you use any belt coarser than 80 grit. Look at amperage, not just horsepower, and shoot for at least 6 amps if possible.

Only a fellow block enthusiast would appreciate this.

This weekend I was at my local ReStore store sorting through a HUGE tray of miscellaneous sockets looking for the few old US made gems that occasionally pop up. On this occasion there were hundred of sockets, but almost all were made in China or Taiwan. I didn't find any diamonds.

However, just when I was about to quit, I noticed a piece of rubber in the middle of all the sockets. I thought... "That looks like like a foot grommet for a block grinder?".

I asked the counter lady how much she wanted for it. She said: "Just take it - you can have it for free." I gave her a quarter and left. When I got home, I compared it to one of my Craftsman block feet. Sure enough, it was an exact match.

Please take a look at this and tell me if it's worth buying for about $30, it's missing most of it's removable parts. Seller says works and that it's 1/2 HP.

I wouldn't mind working on it if it's possible to find the missing parts.

What say you all?

If it's a split phase 1/2hp (and it looks like it is with that tool rest), then I would pass. If it's a capacitor start commercial AND you are willing to add a belt attachment ($$) or use it as a buffer, then maybe. At least it has the lamp cover.

Depends on your local market. Around here you could find a whole one for $40-$50 ...
I agree.

There's a lot to do and replacement parts to find, to get it to a good usable Block grinder.

If it was near me, I would offer $20 and settle at $25, and use it for parts for other projects and sell off what I didn't use on eBay after offering the parts to GJ members at a reduced price.

But, that's just me and SE Michigan has a ready supply of these guys. :)

In my area that's a $10-$15 piece. Personally I'd pass. I paid about half that asking price for this one and barely have $30 in it including the refurb which is in post #11751.

Ditto what the others have said. If I could snag that for 20 bucks I'd buy it for the light. Trying to piece that thing together to make a complete grinder is going to cost you way more than it's worth.

My brother just discovered block grinders.

He is especially intrigued with the industrial or commercially rated ones.

Also, he wants to mount a belt sander on one side.

Which model would you suggest for him? Round top? Square top? HP?

As noted by Exmaxima1, amp rating is key and his recommendation of >6 is a good starting point. I would recommend a commercial/cap start 3/4 or 1 HP.
I have a belt/disc sander kit on an early '70s 3/4 HP commercial block and it works great.
