Nice color combination! What brand and color codes?

Titanium should bling it out nicely.

I don’t remember the code, but from primer to shiner was rust-o. I’ll include the code when I post it ad complete! Man yea, im Sitting on how hot I want my pieces to get, I’m thinking purple!

TM I’ve also got some info to send you soon, about the winding leads!

Here’s a few Ti pieces to pass the time, until the blocks done.

Got this for free today. I was told it would hum on startup but wouldn't spin, so the wheels were cannibalized and grinder was sitting out for the trash. Nuts/washers still there.

Model 397.1949

I thought it might be a pre-block, due to the rounded shape, but I'm not sure.

Pre-block would be cast iron (not aluminum alloy) and weighs about 55 lbs or so.

Its hefty but i dont think 55 lbs hefty. I think most of the weight is from the wheel guards. I should get a chance to tear into it this weekend.

Great score for free! Even if it is toast you have at least $100 in parts there.
I got one very similar recently, I'll take a few pics if it helps anyone.

Anyone now the wiring for a 3971598?
User manual doesn’t have one
IMG_4989.jpg
Is that the same 1/3-HP Block m-397.19580 you posted in the link below?
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8402577&postcount=12178

Because I don't recognize the model you posted: '3971598'.

Here's a wiring diagram for 397.19580, as well as others.

Your grinder is NOT a Pre-Block. In addition to being alloy (and not cast iron), your grinder has a slot for a removable quench tray. Pre-Blocks have their power switch at that location. The switch on a Pre-Block would not fit higher up the center panel because the motor stator (laminations) is gigantic and takes up all the space.

Thanx for clearing that up

I had a few square-top block grinders, but ended up selling them a few yrs ago. One of them had identical wheel guards as this one, or nearly identical as memory serves, with the rest just having the lighter sheet metsl guards. The one with cast wheel guards was noticeably more heavy.

Not long after, since i apparently have a fetish for department store branded bench grinders, I bought 2 almost identical J.C. Penney marked 1/3 hp grinders. They are Baldor relabels, and very good grinders. This block will be in good company.

I have a quench tray for this Craftsman somewhere, but I just moved and have no idea where it's at right now.

garage clean out on block grinder parts. I have inner guards and housing parts for 6” block. I also have housing parts and one side guard set for a 7” block. I don’t know what’s wrong with the windings in the second to last pic. make me an offer if you need anything. I just want these gone.

i’m getting ready to build a new garage so I can turn the current garage into a bedroom with 2 more bedrooms above it. the current pandemic is delaying the meeting with my architect though.

But that’s why I’m trying to clean out and organize as much as possible as a lot of the things will have to be put in a storage container during the construction.

What are my options on the light, is there a replacement cover or replacement light?
Also best way to clean it?

You may want to replace it, for all the time it will take to repair and clean it.

I just ordered 2, to have on hand. They were discontinued from another site that carries Block parts.

Should just tap out. Nothing holding it in there.

+1.

Surprising that the bearing is not stuck to the arbor shaft. I've done maybe a dozen of them, and it's a press fit to the shaft while only a "slip" fit to the housing. The spring washers keep them from spinning in the housing.

So is there a purpose to the little hole in the top of the metal reflector?

I have an extra assembly just like that one that Chad posted with the metal flex, socket and head, with good wires (no plastic hood) but I’m staying away from the post office. :(

Makes me think there is a problem with the arbor shaft.
Hopefully it just got hung up in the housing with old grease.
