I thought so Outlaw. Thanks.

The only number visible on the sticker is 735300290. It is a 1/2 hp model.

Hmmm, I checked the Sears/Craftsman tool catalogues I have, starting with 1962.

The first 3/4-HP flat top model I found was on pp. 100, of the 50th Anniversary edition of the Sears Power and Hand Tool Catalog, 1976/1977. However, it shows 6x3/4" stones.

I do see a listing for 3/4-HP Blocks with 8" stones, in the 1974/75 catalog, it has the separate HD cast iron base with integral tool rests and cooling tray.

I'll let you know if your model shows up in a later catalog.

The 3/4 flat top originally came with an aluminum base and cast tool rests. Then when the 7" model came out the 1HP took over with the aluminum base and stamped steel tool rests.

The 3/4 round top had the cast iron base and tool rests carried over from the pre block 1/2 hp.

I was very lucky to pick up this 1 hp tonight with stand. Missing the side shields but couldn't pass it up for $50.

That's a great deal for sure. The sides might take awhile since the 8" models are sought after. Looks to be in great shape!

YouTube creator: Jeremy Fielding, has posted a video about the centrifugal switch, used in many motors, including some pre-Block grinders.

The one used on the Block grinders is mounted differently than the one in the video, but functions the same way.

Found this on market place 1hp missing side shields $60. If anyone has side shields I’m looking to buy a seta056132a5fc5400e8411db5fefe2c546.jpg

I sure like the attachment of the tool rests on those better than the ones that attach to the inner guard.

Me too my old one attached on inner guard this is much more stable and does loosen from vibration

I realize my old eyes aren't as sharp as they once were, but these two 1-HP flat top Blocks look like twins!

The stands are different, but the thin LH white wheel and marks on the cooling tray, and both need the side wheel guard covers -- got my attention.

I do believe you're correct. Look at the residue pattern in the water tray. Same white spots.

Looks like he made $10 and kept the factory craftsman stand!

Stands nice but I just wanted the grinder no room for a stand. I’ve been keeping my eyes open for a big 1hp for a long time haven’t seen any they must be rare

Closer look, seems like it is sitting on the bench corner.

That is a great deal on a hard to find, great condition AND complete 1-HP Block!

I've got to say:

I made it nearly a year without buying a block grinder, until I came across this one. Not new in the box, but I'd call it new out of the box. I can't see any signs of use on it, and it would make sense based on the other NOS Craftsman items that were part of the same estate. No date stamp on the bottom, but the owners guide was printed in late 1976.

I was a bit side tracked with other projects, but I finally finished the grinder. Huge thank you to MattBlast for the beautiful new label. New Nachi bearings and I used lexan for the eyeshields.

I suppose it is too late now, but putting the sticker on the back of the old plate and using rivets would have been a nice touch. Looks good!

Been looking for a block grinder for a few years and ran across one at an antique shop in the next town over. I've never seen one in person let alone one for sale, so I was pretty excited. Looks to be mostly complete except for one spark arrestor, one broken window, and two rubber feet. Still has the Craftsman brand wheels in it. Runs incredibly smooth compared to the new Delta's that I have a few of. I know this model isn't as cool as the older ones perhaps, but I think it's a good start. Plus, it was only $45. :)

Very nicely done and cool that you've kept it in the family!

I'm making room to get my new-to-me Power Kraft radial drill press on a stand and planning to put either my 1/3 HP pre-block or 1/2 HP block where the old benchtop drill press was. Having trouble deciding whether I want more power or cooler look. LOL

A couple new additions to the family...a near pristine 397.19360 1 HP, complete with original owners manual and a dirty (but complete) 397.19670 3/4 HP gold label round top. The 1 HP will just need a thorough cleaning and bearings, but the 3/4 HP will be a complete resto. I've been looking for these two models for awhile, and found them both in the span of a couple weeks.

The 3/4 HP has the cast iron version of the deluxe base, and I noticed one difference between it and the aluminum version is hex set screws on both top and bottom...don't know if it came this was or was a mod by PO, as they are different sizes (5/32 on bottom vs 1/8 on top)....sure Torqueman can tell us.

Nice!! You're set for some heavy duty grinding!

I bet the upper set screws were an PO mod. My older 1/2hp cast round top only has set screws on the bottom. From you #4 picture it looks like there is only a upper screw on the right side. Maybe he had a grinding wheel out of balance and it was vibrating the tool rest loose.

I agree with Radar, the HD 1 and 3/4-HP's I've seen/owned, had the set screws on the bottom only.
Great scores, BTW!
:rocker:
I found the owner's manual for model 397.19670 (eMail me, I can send you a copy; it may also be available on OWWM's website).

Update - The manual is available from VintageMachinery (OWWM's sister). Link --> http://www.vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=9491
