I picked this up at Sears today on sale for $39.99
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-4-drawer-portable-tool-chest/p-00935424000P

4 Drawer portable tool chest. The drawers are ball bearing slides with a weight limit of 25lbs per drawer. They lock into place with the lid down.

I bought it keep a set of tools in the back of my pickup. I have a hard cover that locks on the back so they will stay safe. I'll keep it in place with a cargo bar that I already have.

I'm very happy with it and it's hard to beat for $39.99.

Thanks @Chromdome35 for the review. I been contemplating to get this box, but the small local store does not have it, so kinda hard to decide without being able to see and touch in person.

Agreed that for $40 plus using points, it is hard to beat!

I slowly accumulated these Craftsman boxes one at a time as I needed more space to store my always growing set of tools. I'm about ready to start another stack. The oldest of the group is the top box on the left in the first photo. I think I picked that up in the mid to late 1980s..... right around the time I started getting interested in cars. My bottom rollers were manufactured in 1989, 1992, and 2000. I don't remember where to check for the manufacturer's date on the mid and top boxes. If anyone would care to point that out, I'd appreciate it.

I inherited this Craftsman stack from my Grandfather, I think he purchased it sometime in the late 1990s.

I also have these two. The one on the right I received as a gift when I was 16 or 17, so around 2001-2002. The middle chest under my lathe I purchased new sometime around 2006-2007. I really like the old style "griplatch" ball bearing drawers.

This is my primary set of Chraftsman tool boxes. The set is built up from three separate boxes ..... bottom box, full-width intermediate drawer, and top box. They are all heavy-duty Griplatch style and about 7 years old. Very pleased with the set, unfortunately, I don't think this style is available any longer. Only real problem is the overall height which makes it a little hard to access the top of the top box.

I modified the bottom box by replacing its big drawer in the lower right corner with four shallower (top to bottom height) drawers. This modification is described in one of my links at the bottom of this post. Also, I've added several external accessories such as the towel bar and small shelf on the left side, and the glove box, can rack and fold-out shelf on the right side.

I have a 26" 12-drawer bottom & 12-drawer top that I've had for 40+ years. Today, I was doing some serious looking at the Craftsman 52" Pro Model. Dang thing is really tall but it has the best drawer layout of anything I've looked at. My wife is on board with me getting it - says "you've been talking about a new toolbox for 30 years now".

I just have to convince myself to pull the trigger. I have the itch...

CM has never been my box of choice for "working" toolboxes.
i'm a heavy eq mechanic by trade..
i use (whats left of) a CM top box in my service truck. i bought the box new in the late 90's and used it in the mobile box back of my P/U truck, and at the race shop for my fab tools.
in '03 i went back out in the field at the dealership i work for, the box has been broken, welded, cut apart, and reinforced many times.

the cantilever i picked up at a flea mkt for $10, gifted it, and a bunch of CM usa hand tools to my stepson last xmas..

CM 26" top box i picked up at a flea mkt for $20 it's my most portable box

I mounted a 22" monitor in the lid of mine, ordered a SFF computer and it is now mounted on the left side of the box. Now just to get some good speakers for it

There are some great examples here! Thanks guys, I guess I'm just getting tired of the extremely expensive tool truck Kool Aid and reminiscing about my beginner days with Cman boxes.

I really like that setup! Have you posted drawer pics in the toolbox thread? I'm always interested in seeing industrial toolboxes.

I have two. I have had this red box since about 2000.

IMG_5868.jpg

I sorta outgrew it as I required more tools, and just picked up this craftsman pro last weekend along with some magnet drawer labels. So far I love it but that's a meaningless review only one week in and before I really fully populate it with tools. That said, I like looking at it.

I've had a Homak box (made in USA) for the last 30+ years which has held up very well in my home shop and is still going strong. However, it has become too small to hold all my tools, so last week I brought home a new Craftsman box from Sears. Top, mid section, and bottom roller - thirteen drawers. It is their Heavy Duty grade (75 lb drawer load rating) which is their mid grade box and is pretty comparable to my old Homak box. In a home shop, Craftsman's heavy duty grade should last a lifetime with normal use.

The Craftsman standard duty grade is less expensive and pretty flimsy - I don't think it would survive too many years in my shop. If I earned my living with my tool box, however, I would get the most expensive Craftsman box with a 100 lb drawer load rating.

I picked this one up today. It has a side shelf which looks to be from the factory. It is riveted in the side and folds into the side for storage.

The bottom chest also has a pull out work area where the first drawer would normally be. This is the only one like this I have seen. Can anyone tell me about this configuration. Was it a regular stocked item or was it custom ordered or did someone make/modify this setup?

For a while, certain boxes had a built in folding shelf. The work surface drawer, I do not know about.

Those were in stock, store items. I remember checking out those boxes with the pull out shelf back in the late 80s. I had mixed feelings about having a convenient work space as opposed to an additional drawer of storage space. I decided the shelf would be more work than it would be beneficial -- having the shelf open (covered with whatever project) and effectively blocking access to anything stored in the top drawer. So I got a 9D bottom box with all drawers, it was dark grey cabinet with light grey drawers. This was just before ball bearing drawer slides became widely available.

Thanks for the info on this. This is the first one I have seen with these features. The drawer shelf is interesting, but seems kind of useless. It would be a good place to put a laptop or tablet, but not sure if laptops were in widespread use when this was made. Tablets certainly where not around when this box was made.

One of the travel boxes. Usually for longer trips. Also take an ammo box full of hand tools.

The garage setup. I got the grey ones in the eighties and added the mid box when I ran out of room. I got the top black one in the early 2000s and the bot to red on sale mid 2000s and the mid on sale after that.

Scoped out that 41" top box for $150. Sez my local store has it for free pickup. Might need to add that but then id need the bottom roller cabinet.

I've had this setup for over 12 years now and have been pleased with it, for the most part. I did add the locker to it about 6 years ago and feel it was well worth the investment. My only complaints are that I wish Craftsman offered the taller lid design of the top chest at the time I purchased this and that the casters are complete garbage.

Hi,

I guess you can count another member in the club.
I just bought a Grey/red cabinet (base+3 drawers). It's in pretty good shape overall, just need a bit of cleaning.

No model number on the bottom right corner, "patent pending 04-69"

The only problem I have is that the casters are missing.
Does anyone have a suggestion/preference for a brand or model that works well on those ?

Thanks.

Probably not what you had in mind but the "woody" rally box was a Christmas gift from my parents...in maybe 1978 or so. The other older box was part of a NOS Craftsman lot I bought from a local horder.
