The subq fluids did her more good than we thought. Penny had one good day and an OK day. We went out for a 'walk' and sniffed some favorite places, ambled about a bit a few times. It sure perked her up a lot, but she ran out of energy fast. She went way downhill this evening. Everything went south. I held her and gave her what comfort I could. She passed about an hour ago in my arms. I'm in a strange calm place right now. I can't sleep and I'm all cried out. It's almost like I'm relieved. We'll bury her next to Gracie in the morning. I'm sure I'll melt down then.
Pretty hard to read-harder to respond. I'm deeply sorry Kay. Nothing at this point will suffice, but maybe take solace in the fact that we were there at the end, and our friends deserved that and more. I'm still not really over my boy, but getting a little better all the time. Again, my condolences.

We lost him in November due to stomach cancer. Pretty unexpected and happened fast, he was only 8

Oh man, TERRIBLY sorry to hear about this. What a beautiful pup. I lost my black Lab, Dudley 6 years ago. He was my "lifetime best friend" and I meant it but now having just lost Sooner (my avatar) I think HE was my life time best friend.

Maybe do what I did. This always was Sooner's truck:

It was tough especially for our kids. What was nice is we had our family in town the week before for our sons birthday party so it was nice everyone got to see him one last time

This was the night before we took him in. She loved her wrigley

guard kitty at my buddy's shop:

shop_kitty by ski.mohawk, on Flickr

Great looking cat. I'm very partial to orange tabbys. I had one that I named, "Rocket" as a kitten because out of nowhere he'd BLAST off for some reason. Never knew why, just got a wild hair. Once he grew up he was the laziest cat ever. Stayed out all night, came home in the morning and slept all day, preferably in your lap. Super affectionate, more like a dog. Let you scratch his belly! Unusual for a cat.

One day he never returned. I never found out what happened to him until about a year later I met a neighbor that lived a block away who told me there was a very long haired orange tabby that had been hit near their house and no one knew who he belonged to. He was a very affectionate lap cat as long as he lasted. Poor old Rocket!

I love that there is a thread here for this!! Basically I noticed this white shepard-mix running around my neighborhood in the one week it rains here in Las Vegas. She was soaking wet and didn't really trust humans. (I think her previous owner used to hit her, quick hand movements would make her run off and hide :( so it took a nights to gain her trust) I was leaving her food on my porch (where it was dry) and one night she took shelter in my garage in front of my space heater (while i was under my car replacing some driveline bushings - she scared the heck out of me since I wasn't paying attention out there!) Best friends ever since.

after a few months she filled out nicely

and a cool shot of her waiting for me to finish dipshitting around my house

That dog is partly or mostly Norwegian Elkhound I'd bet. I had three of them. Theyre great dogs.

One I got from the pound the day before he was going to be put down. He was FILTHY! Had to bathe him3x before the water coming off him wasn't brown or piss yellow. Turned out the vet said he'd likely been lost from someone on vacation from somewhere cold because his coat was extremely heavy. Had him awhile before I took him to the park. Let him out of the car and he ran full out for the park lake. There were big white geese all over the grass, I thought he'd just scatter them. Right before he got to them he cut and ran around them til they were in a tight crowd and he walked them right into the water! Somebody trained him to do that. Elkhounds are hunting dogs for bear and moose (elk in Europe). They're not herding dogs as far as I know.

He's all Akita, the third one I've had. They found him and two of his siblings running the streets of Detroit at about 5 month of age. They were very malnourished and had alot of joint problems from being caged is our best guess. We didnt know if he was going to make it as it was touch and go for a bit. That was 3.5 years ago.

Excellent! Wow, coulda sworn he was an Elkhound, maybe it's just that photo.

Great that you've given him a life. How's his disposition of he was caged?

We've had some challenges. We think it was a backyard breeder that dumped them and they had 0 socialization until we got them. As a result, he was terrified of everything. For the first 3 days we had him, we couldn't get near him. It took a ton of work (took us 6 months to get him to use stairs), but he's over most of it. He's still a bit wary of strangers in the house, no aggression, just aloof.

He's turned into a super affectionate giant goofball.

This was the terrified pup

Wow, it was only the prior page and only mid November when I posted my latest pictures of Sooner saying what good health he was in for 12 years old. He passed on Monday, December 14th. I posted a separate thread on it and everyone was SO thoughtful in offering their condolences. Thank you.

I'm watching tv and he's not at my feet as he has been for the last 12 years. I'm heartbroken about him and I think I always will be on the verge of tears when I think of him.

My final tribute to my Sooner boy is to post a photo of him as a tiny puppy. Huge paws already showed how big he'd be.

Give your pups all a lot of hugs and belly rubs. They're gone WAAY too fast and though I've said it on the other thread I'll repeat it here: If a dog doesn't deserve to go to Heaven then nothing and no one does. If there's a Heaven and I somehow qualify I don't want to go if Sooner's not there.

******** it man! I hadn't been on the site in awhile and just popped in and went to one of my favorite threads and see this. I am literally shedding a tear or two right now. I could always tell you were a huge dog person and loved Sooner more than life itself. I too believe that all dogs go to heaven and I hope to see all of mine when/if I get there. Sooner was a handsome boy but I'm a bit partial...my best dog was a yellow lab (Max) and my current knucklehead is a black lab (Fletcher). I hope time heals the huge hole in your heart and you open your heart and home up to a new pup that will bring you joy in new ways. Now I need to find a f'ing tissue.

Ah, thank you Anthony for the kind words.

Yes, Sooner's passing has left a GIANT hole in my heart and my life. I talk to him everyday. I say, "I miss you big doggy. I think of you everyday, I'll be there soon too" His bed is still in front of me in the living room with his collar on it, his photo is the wallpaper on my computer and I put a decal of him on the back window of HIS truck, our big crew dually. He'll always be with me in spirit. Gotta go wipe a tear now. He was an angel in life, so I think God may let him be an angel in the afterlife.

GOOD ON YOU! for teaching him what love and care mean. Give the big goofball a hug and some nice gentle scratching behind the ears for me, another big dog lover.

PS: I love the little ones too. Over the last 3-4 years of Sooner's life we rescued three other small dogs - why yes, we ARE nuts. They're great little dogs and I love them but Sooner and Dudley (black Lab) before him hold special places in my heart. I suppose they will too before its all done. Love your dogs (& cats) gentlemen. Try to be the people they think you are!

Wife and daughter want a healer to hang with them at the barn with the horses.

I don't want a dog that is smarter than I am. Don't want to be fetching the stick for the dog, if you know what I mean.

Much as I'm unready for a new dog, I was introduced to a 5 month old male black and silver mini schnauzer. It was love at first sight. He is sleeping on my chest as I type this. Poor little fellow has been sleeping on a steel rack for the last 3 months in a crate. I don't think he knows what to make of a real bed. I don't want him up all night, so pics this weekend.

Here's our beloved Chloe -- 3 year old Rat Terrier that we rescued 2 years ago. She is super intelligent, affectionate, awesome watch dog. We got her from a dog rescue over in Akron, and she's part of the family.
