.....No bad dogs. No bad dog breeds. Just loyal companion.
Totally agree. There are no bad dogs. I suppose - as with humans - there's the extremely rare "Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy dog" but really? Dogs turn out how you treat them as little puppies. Properly socialized with love and familiarity with all kinds of people & friendly dogs they turn out friendly, curious and loyal as can be. It's been the case with every dog I've ever had including dogs I've adopted that were not puppies when I got them.

Meet Obie (Obi-Wan Kenobeagle). He came to us at the end of November 2022. He thinks the garage is too cold right now to hang out it in.
Obie was a stray from Alabama and ended up with a rescue in Minnesota. This old dude is such a friendly dog we wonder how he ended up in a shelter. He's about 13 and will spend his days getting spoiled.

Thank you SO SO much for taking in this good ole pooch and making his later days as sweet as you can. The bed, blankets and jackets really help his old bones stay warm. Please give him some gentle belly rubs and nice words from me.

Of course there's no way to know how he ended up in a shelter but there are many heartbreaking stories about people leaving senior dogs because they don't want to care for them anymore - FRIGGIN HEARTLESS AHOLES. But also people that are made to give up their lifelong dogs despite not wanting to.

My now 2 year old adopted girl, Fifi. We absolutely lucked out getting her last Spring. She's sweet, well behaved - loves to play at the dog park. Never an accident in the house, never chews anything she shouldn't. We hit the dog adoption Lotto.

"Thank guys for putting this nice headrest right where I need it to rest comfortably"

This is Barnabas, Barnie for short. Barnie lives in my shop. 3 year old Lab named for Barnabas Collins in the old '80's vampire series Dark Shadows, because he IS my dark shadow. Velcro dog. His whole mission in life is to be with me no matter what. I mean even right down to if I pee in the woods, he has to pee right next to me.:)

IMG_0996.JPGThat pic is him staring at me for the last half hour because he knows it is time for his run. Everyday. Rain, snow, sleet, well below freezing, he doesn't care. Through woods and fields, I ride the quad 3 miles and he probably runs 5 miles with all his side trips, chasing smells, rabbits, squirrels, deer. He can do 23 mph flatout. Not all that fast, but I believe he could do 12 mph all day. About half of that run is along a pretty substantial creek, and him being a Lab, of course, he goes swimming EVERY day. I have even seen him break the ice on the creek to get in his favorite swimming hole. Doesn't faze him a bit.
I love dogs. Can't ask for better, more faithful friends. Down to just Barnie now but have never been without 1 or 2 or 3. I've had a lot of dogs over my 72 years, but never a dog like Barnie.

Barnie is a beautiful dog but then I'm very partial to Labradors. They're the reason I started this thread all those years ago. Dudley was my black Lab and when he got a bit older, maybe 8 or 9 I brought in Sooner - the blonde Lab in my avatar. Both are long gone now and I miss them still. Occasionally I still talk to them though I've had a number of great dogs since them.

When he gets a bit older please slow down on the ATV for him and his aged old bones. Eventually, he'll probably need to ride but that's ok. You'll be giving him what he loves - letting him see "his" property and smell his smells!

Dudley young and old (I found out much later he was a Labrador/Dalmation cross but he acted as a Lab completely other than being wicked fast when he was young)

Oh, believe me. I'm not pushing him. He knows the way and is leading most of the time, except for his side trips. Then he runs like the dickens to get back ahead of me. And he already rides on the quad. I had him on the quad at 6 weeks old. I throw a blanket on the tank, and he lays across the tank between my legs. But he would much rather run!
Dudley's a good lookin' old fella, too. I love the white face. Kinda like me. My last Lab, ole Maully dog, had a white face when she got old. Looked like a raccoon! She's buried on the farm. Me and Barney say hello every day on our run.

Dudley had a reverse Zoro mask by the time he passed. He lived to 14, a good long run but I miss him still. Both he and Sooner were such sweet souls. So devoted just as you say Barnie is.

As for "laying across the tank..." Sooner was a big horse and when we used to have Jet Ski's he LOVED riding it just as you say, across the thing with his ears flopping in the wind.

Was helping a friend replace a clutch this weekend, using my lift. My dogs kept us company most of the day. All 3 are rescue dogs. The brindle is Charlie, the light brown one is Molly, and the black one is Scout.

Scout is the newest edition. Picked her up at a gas station the weekend after Thanksgiving where she was digging in the trash. No tags and no chip. She was 22 lbs at the time, and just skin and bones. Now she's a healthy 33 lbs. We were going to just feed her and then take her to a rescue or something. But apparently we're not cut out to foster dogs.

Excellent that you rescued all these good souls. Particularly excellent that you saved Scout from likely starving or being hurt. I could never foster a dog. I fall for them easily and I think but can't prove that recused dogs know it and try to show their grateful-ness (is that a word?)

Got to work today and found out my coworker had to say goodbye to his boy (8 year old German Shepherd), going to love on my pups a little extra tonight.
8 is waay too young even for a bigger dog like a German Shepherd.

None of them live nearly long enough. I say that's because they're better than us and only the good die young!

You said a mouthful Dan, if people could be half as good as dogs the world would be an amazing place.
Thanks.

Every time I see a story on Facebook or elsewhere that a dog (or any animal) helped another, missed it's taste, etc I post my own quote "Dogs are better than people and it ain't even close" - Me.

I really believe it too. Dogs aren't intentionally cruel or hurtful to others. Sure they're animals (as are we) and they hunt if they need to. Different breeds have different instincts so a Rat Terrier will chase and kill a rat but who bred them for that? WE did. Another example is even though Great Danes are among THE biggest dog breeds they aren't mean just because they're the biggest+/- (...can't always say that about humans). They're gentle giants by most accounts.

I'll extend it to saying animals are better than humans and though there MAY be a few cruel inhumane animals overall I think they're more admirable than many humans. We can all learn something from dogs.

And...an updated photo...now 60lbs freshly shorn...

IMG_2189[19249].jpg

He doesn't look too happy after being sheared, just tell him his coat will grow out and give him some extra cookies 😊
I can relate. Was trying to let my doodle's coat grow out because we are planning two cold weather camping trips. Figured she needed the extra hair BUT, it got badly matted. She's good about being combed but I was pulling her hair so took to the groomer. He said the mats were so close to the skin he couldn't get them out without shaving her.

She is NOT pleased and it shows. We've never put a sweater on her before but she looked SO skinny and its been so cold here. She slept all night on my bed curled into a ball.

Your dog on the right always reminds me of a Norweigan Elkhound/Black Lab mix that we had. She was the best dog ever. I enjoy seeing your pics everytime.

I had gone to the pound, looking for a different type of dog. A young guy had a box of fuzzy puppies out front. He said he couldn't keep them, but the pound was out of room, so they'd be put down if he left them there. She chose me, & I took her home.

When I got her, her name was Tasha, but my girlfriend at the time had a great dane mix named Shasta. I thought Shasta & Tasha sounded too much alike to the dogs when we took the dogs out to play. I changed her name to Tanya, which still sounded close to Tasha, but didn't sound like Shasta.

Tanya learned everything quickly. She was amazing at heeling. She saw it as a game. I'd turn sharply any direction & she hustle to stay right at my side. I'd drag my heel on the last step to stop. She'd hear that sound & knew to sit when we stopped on the following step.

Tanya was great to hike with. I'd tell her "ok" & she'd run up & down the trail, but never over a hill or around a corner, so she was always in sight. I'd whistle & she'd come back at a run. She loved to swim in streams.

She was incredibly fast. She'd sometimes catch birds. Not sneaky like a cat, but at a full charge while barking. She'd jump as they took flight & catch them in the air. When she played with other dogs she could outrun any of them.

She had different barks. If a stranger was at the gate she had a serious bark. But if it was someone she knew, it was more of an announcement "Hey Boss, your friend is here". When my future wife (Not the ex-girlfriend with Shasta) first met Tanya, it was that stranger bark only one time. I told Tanya "She's ok", & it was the friendly announcement bark after that.

Tanya would wait at the door until we told her "ok". In or out. My wife was very pleased with that. You could put down a towel if she was wet & dry her off before she'd run in the house.

She was protective of the home when it was just me. When I got married, she turned it up. When we had a baby even more so. She was great with the baby. He was her kid to look out for.

She found a guy in the yard one night. That was a serious "I'm going to get you" bark. I ran out the door. She was right on his heels as he was high stepping as fast as he could to not get bit. She was so fast that biting him would have been easy, but that wasn't her intention. She just needed him to think he was going to get bit. As he jumped over the fence I hollered "HEY!". He called out "Sorry, I was cutting thru your yard". We lived in a neighborhood where the streets were a maze. Cutting thru my yard probably saved him blocks & blocks of walking. But it never happened again. Tanya made her point.

One night I left the window open on my car. I went out to get something, & there was an animal in the car. I could see its eyes & it was growling. I backed away & it poked its face out. Once I could see her face I recognized Tanya. I said "Hey!" She looked embarrassed. I opened the door & she came out of the car very sheepishly. Looking sort of like "Sorry Boss, I didn't know it was you. How did I get in that car anyway?"

We lost her in the 80s. I miss her still. Every dog since I've hoped would be like her. But she was one of a kind in my life. Lots of fond memories.

All our dogs have had a slight name change when we got them. Holly was renamed from Hailey by her foster parents before we got her, as one of their kids was named Hailey. Tara was originally Sarah, but as thats my missus' name it could have got confusing and our older dog we lost last year was also named Holly but was Hallie before.

Our old Border Collie x Labrador Lucy was daft as a brush, wouldn't hurt a fly and was just a big goofball.
When she was a pup the next door neighbours kids were constantly throwing stuff at her, so she was never a fan of them.
She once caught one of them in the back of our garden (they were always climbing over the 6ft fence and generally being a PITA destroying stuff) and she decided to make a point that it was her property.
She had him backed into the corner of the garden, growling at him. First time she'd ever growled at anyone but you could tell she was like "this is just a friendly warning, i'm not taking any sh!t from you now".
His dads response, "just let her bite him next time, he never listens to me".

With the yard and fields being underwater the last couple days, the boy is itching' to go today with near 70f here in mid-Ohio. Drying out pretty good today. When he's out on the 50' lead (to keep him outta the fields) when we're swamped, he feels like he's done something wrong and is being punished ..and yes, the veggie garden, garage and property are free of "varmits"

Here’s some updated pics of my sweet girl lab Dixie. The sweetest girl ever. Everyday I come home she is right there to give me a bear hug lol. She won’t give up that big bone. She has chewed on that one for weeks lol. This is her laying on her pillow on the basement floor while I look at all my tools and tinker with things. She keeps me company and the first time she hears a noise she is on her feet lol. She is very good about shaking hands to get what she wants. When she hears or sees treats the paw comes up to shake lol. Everyone tells me she isn’t natural lab because she has a white coat. She used to be a lot more white when she was a puppy. My neighbors all like her. And she loves my niece and nephews too. She definitely has the energy of a lab lol. I want another dog to keep her company but she is energetic enough haha. I have a brand new orange collar for her to match her leash I need to put on. This one’s old and cracking. I bought Dixie for $300 when she was 15 weeks old from my mom’s coworker whose husband bought her without asking and their older dog didn’t like her very well. A breeder in California tried buying her for $800 but the husband knew I wanted a dog again and so he sold her to us instead of them. She was born in 2017 in August we got her in November of 2017.

I’ll try and find pictures of my old dog Rusty. He was a lab shepherd mix.

Messi update:

We would love Messi the same even if he was never a MWD. It’s just that everything we find out about his incredible life make us so proud of him and his accomplishments. Just like a parent would feel about their children. We were contacted the other day by Messi’s first handler who was with Messi for six years. He shared some of Messi’s accomplishments and some pics and I thought I’d share them here.

Some of the cool things Messi has done:

Messi found something in a very crowded building that the President was in (due to secrecy, we do not know which President or building). The handler happened to be walking through the building with Messi, when out of nowhere he started to pull his handler into the middle of the crowd. There were other handlers with their dogs in the area, and at first he thought Messi was trying to pick a fight with another dog because he never pulled so hard before. Messi alerts to something and they evacuated the building and bomb squad came and took care of it. For that Messi and his handler were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

Messi worked President Trump’s inauguration night and Messi got to meet Trump. (Messi received lots of love from Trump)

Messi spent 2 weeks in the Hamptons for then Vice President Biden‘s vacation, and Messi lived on the beach, enjoying the water, between working.

Messi spent a week on full detail solely protecting the President of Afghanistan throughout NYC for the United Nations General Assembly.

Messi spent 2 weeks traveling with the Pope when he visited Philly and NYC.

According to his handler: “Messi was like my little knucklehead brother but we could read each other like nothing I ever seen before. At the time, he was the best dog in the kennel. There was nothing and I mean nothing that he couldn’t find. He was unstoppable in his prime.”

NOW… he is loving retirement and we are trying make sure he is very well taken care of and spoiled rotten.

This reminds me of my dog when I was a kid. She was a dachshund. Mom gave her a huge ham bone. It was bigger than her. She didn't know what to do. She just stood there staring at it and shaking. Mom took it back and scraped all the meat off for her.
