Winnie, our yellow lab, got ejected through an open window when I had to brake suddenly for a stop light. Fortunately, we were on a two lane road and she went out on the right turn lane. Car in that lane was able to slow/stop before he got to her. When I saw her she was on the shoulder looking at us and apparently thinking 'what happened?'. She was scuffed a little and we had our vet check her and found nothing else. Our next stop was for a harness and leash that attached to the center seat belt. No more problems after that. She still had enough slack to get her head out the windows and lie down comfortably. It would also keep her in the back seat if we were ever in a collision.
We had a Papillion that when riding with my wife in the passenger seat the pup would practically have all four feet out the window. My wife always wondered how I handled the pup when my wife wasn't with. When it was just me and the pup she might have one foot out the window and the other three firmly on the seat of door arm rest. I told my wife the pup is more daring when you are with because you are hanging on to her!

There were many times the pup had three feet, both front and one rear on the window frame out of the window and my wife was firmly hanging on to the last hind foot.

We named our new Norwegian Elkhound pup Astrid.

It's an old Norwegian breed. They've found elkhounds buried with Vikings along with their weapons & other prized possesions. They were used to hunt moose & protect herds. Elghund translates to "Moose hound". We looked thru a bunch of Norse/Viking names & ended up with Astrid after the hero girl from the "How To Train Your Dragon" movies.

Astrid loves sticks. But doesn't understand that it's better to carry them from the middle.

She's more into the Groucho technique than the Flying Wallenda method.

Many years ago I had three different Norwegian Elkhounds. They were beautiful and sweet dogs.

So what happens to you when a cat takse off runnig away from them?
If they are anything like our 75 lb lab was, you brace yourself and hang on for the ride. If you were lucky there was a handy tree or post to grab and hope you could hold onto the leash!

Here's Flash. He's usually only in the garage when my wife kicks him out of the house. Apparently he sees himself as a dog of leisure rather than one who has to work on cars for a living.

This picture is also unusual in that he's awake. Generally he's asleep on his cushion when he's in the garage.

Thankfully they are pretty good. We see deer all the time. Sometimes they will do a quick lunge but I'll yell and they will stop. They outweigh me by 100lbs.

Here's my little crew, trying to learn to heel. As for my choice of footwear, those are my "slippers". Well worn in work boots that fit my feet just right, & have had their laces removed. 🙂

Astrid:
New pup just came home last night. Norwegian Elkhound. 14 weeks. We're still deciding on her name.

Not much interested in holding still for a pic.
