I posted some of this elsewhere, but I guess it belongs here too.

Our Norweigan Elkhound puppy Astrid is almost 6 months old. Here she is with her best buddy Fozzie. Smile for the camera please.

She's gaining on him size wise. I think she's already faster than he is.
20230813_083237.jpg

She is getting into everything. When my wife says "Bring it", the dog runs right over & gives up the offending item. But not for me. I have resorted to bribery to try to train her. The other day she got a soda can out of the recycling bin.
20230801_211130.jpg
I traded her a goody for it & praised her for bringing it to me.

She is a smart pup, & knew a good opportunity when she saw it. Before we were done it had cost me 15 goodies & I had a pile of cans. Who was training whom?
20230802_192548.jpg
I knew I was being had, but wanted to reinforce "Bring it", so I played along for awhile. Then I emptied the recycling bin.
So you're wife is the alpha and you're the beta.
We all know no one takes the beta seriously.🤣

After having to put down the last of our 4 huskies Nala (my avatar pic) last June, it was time for a new dog.

Mishka is a Catahoula leopard dog/husky mix, rescued from Louisiana....never even knew the breed, let alone state dog existed! No garage shots yet, but I'm sure I'll get a dog bed for her soon! It's odd having a dog that isn't constantly running away/escaping and one that actually listens to you....but a Husky puppy would be great to be trained by Mishka!...haha.....

We had a Catahoula/Blue Heeler mix when I was a kid. Always tried to steer us and nipped our heels constantly. I remember all our jeans were frayed at the back of the cuff. But 100% loyal. My Mom always knew if she wanted to find us while we were outside, she just had to call the dog. She was always with us.

There's nothing to compare to a good furry boy or girl helping around the house and garage!

I can now look at this thread, for the 1st time since we said goodbye to Abby, back in February 2022.

I'm not sure which one of these female yellow labs we will be bringing home next Sunday, but her name is Penny!

Hell, take a couple of them each!

All such good looking pups. Lumpy, thanks for saving that fine looking boy. What's his name? Give him some soft belly rubs for all his new GJ friends!

This is Penny.

We picked her up yesterday. She is sweet and very 'chilled out'. Her 1st night went very well. She has way too many toys to play with, thanks to Mrs. Torqueman.

I was like a first time dad, taking a ton of pictures. This one is a favorite, so far.

Oh, BTW she is the pup in the upper left of this picture.

Gettin the pup used to being out in the garage. He goes out exploring, then comes back and hangs out near me. Here, he fell asleep on my leg while wrenching on the effonehunnit window regulator. IMG_2337.jpeg

Fired up the air compressor and he ran. I called and called, and couldn’t find him. Finally found him lol IMG_2339.jpeg

He’s turning 9 weeks old this week I believe. He’s gonna get to be a great garage dog, just gotta get him used to the loud sound and such. Oh and to quit following his nose around the garage/yard until he bumps into something lmao

So my two got in trouble yesterday. We just hired an exterminator to spray outside about monthly in the summer. I put the dogs inside so they wouldn't bark at him never thinking he was going to spray the whole perimeter of the house including the front yard and the porch.

They (pretty sure it was Max the mini terrorist) that lunged at him outside the window and knocked over my girlfriend's antique glass lamp. Broke it though it didn't harm the shade. I probably can glue the majority of the glass back if she wants.

Also broke a very old oval frame that had convex glass. It had a B&W photo of my girlfriend's mother's dad. Her mother just passed away in December at age 100 & 1/2! So that gives you an idea how old this photo is. The picture isn't damaged but the frame is. I'll try to fix it but it looks like a lost cause.

PS: Yeah, those are bed sheets covering the windows. Pretty ghetto but we haven't picked window coverings yet since we will remodel this dining room that had been used by my girlfriends mother as her living room in her declining days before she passed away.

Cute puppy. But then what puppy isn't mega cute? Get him a bed and throw one of your socks in it and he'll tend to go there when he's frightened
That’s a good idea about the bed and a sock.

I have a dog kennel I need to get to, to see if he isn’t too small for it. I figured a nice bed in a kennel (door open) might be useful as his safe space in the garage.

Just trying to see what he is comfortable with. Hopefully eventually he can be unsupervised the majority of the day. Just gonna be a year or two until he is mature enough for that.

A kennel that's too big isn't an issue. Put a bed inside of it that will still fit him he's full grown and throw an old blanket or bedspread over it and it'll feel safe and secure to him. Plus it'll cut noise a little which tends to scare puppies.

Falling asleep on your leg like that it's obvious he's already bonded to you, feels safe when he's in contact or near you. He's going to be a great friend.

By too big, I mean the grids. I don’t know if he can fit through/squeeze through the spaces. The kennel was bought for a large/X-large breed dog.

I have my nephews over this weekend, so the pup project will wait till Monday.

I have a few things I need to rearrange in order to get the pup off into a “concealed” corner. Concealed as in its protected on 2 sides, but I can still glance over and see him if I peek around.

Yeah, he is going to be a great doggy. Whenever he gets scared, he buries his face into my arms if I’m holding him. But I’ll be damned if he doesn’t come when called haha. That’ll happen in time though.

Seems he sleeps the best when he is on or directly touching me. Just ***** because then I cannot move for 2+ hours!

He's formed a strong bond with you very early. Never make the mistake of shouting at him and of course never ever hitting him. It would confuse the hell out of him because you're his leader.

He's great looking pup. Once he understands what you want he'll do it for sure. It's just finding the way to communicate your desire to him.

Nope. No hitting. I’ll touch the nose “no” but no hitting. That’s the quickest way to get the opposite of what you want.

I did have an incident where he kept standing up with his front paws on the coffee table to try to sneak food. I kept nudging him off and saying “no”. Finally said “NO” fairly sternly. He dropped his head, looked at me side eyed, and slinked away. Apparently beagles are drama kings lol.

Positive reinforcement, man. Instead of smacking when he starts peeing in the house, pick him up mid piss, and walk him outside “come on, Otis, let’s go outside go potty!” And when he potty’s outside “GOOD BOY! Go outside go potty GOOD BOY OTIS!!!”

So far, his only “tell” when he has to pee in the morning, is he will “pounce” on me to wake me up, then I ask “go outside go potty!?” And he will do a little happy dance and “pounce” again.

Dogs talk. Just gotta figure out how to interpret.

Went to a friends shop, lil man sniffed the air the whole way. IMG_2383.jpeg

Then did a fair amount of running errands in town. IMG_2386.jpeg

Then a nice long nap on my arm the 35 minute drive back towards home IMG_2385.jpeg

Hoping to get him socialized very quickly. I work from home, and have customers that come and go. So I want a friendly pup. Not too worried about thieves, I just want a cool shop dog. I mean, have you ever been to a shop that’s had one hell of a cool *** doggo?!?! Lol

Penny update. 9 weeks, healthy and getting more active each day.

Here she's taking a 'break', one of many. She's hugging one of her many, many toys - a squeaky cow.

Oh, I introduced her to the garage, while I changed the air filter on the truck. She quickly sniffed out the dog food bag and sat down near it.

I thought he looked like a beardie. We had two of them. I got good at brushing a dog after almost thirty years of bearded collies.
My ex and I showed Beardies about 30 years ago, I’ve been 26 yrs without a dog and then got a chance to give this boy a home, Between my ex and my oldest daughter I didn’t stand a chance, apparently NO wasn’t an answer.

Here is my very sweet girl lab Dixie. She decided she would borrow the niece and nephews slip n slide to wash the mud off her body as you can tell by the dirty water lol. She is so goofy haha. She hates baths and the garden hose but she sees a pool of water and she gets in haha. After this she chased some deer and got muddy again but was hungry so we went in and ate and I cleaned her off and washed the towel right away so it would not stain and then mom kill me lol.

I think my dog is broken. I set up the only kennel I have, put the towel he came home in, in there, left the door open, with the kennel in a conspicuous place, so that he can come and go freely…

Yup. Pulled the towel out, and is sleeping in front of it Lmao.

We learned “come here”, but promptly forgot it when we learned “sit”.

He’s something else, Lmao.

Oh and he peed on my chest this morning because I didn’t wake up quick enough. I guess I jumped up stupid quick, which scared him. So now he has been “telling me off” vocally hahaha

What a character 😂😂

Get him a floor for the crate, a nice mat and maybe a blanket over half the top for "privacy". Entice with a few treats, coax him in with a command of "crate" or "place" and praise when he goes in.

Mine learned "crate" pretty quick, and spent nights and workdays inside until housetrained. They're smart, mine was pissed at me one day because I was on the phone and ignoring him, so he walked right over to his pillow, dragged it out of his crate and promptly marked it right in front of me.

I got rid of the crate when he was fully trained. Now he has a bed that he runs to when I tell him "place" or " go lay down".

A blanket over the top would be shredded in no time lmao.

He’s teething, so everything is fair game.

He’s getting used to it, he was hanging out in it off and on. He’ll get there.
