Our previous Lab Kirby for a period had occasional seizures and she was a cancer survivor (our vet has a new wing financed by her treatments). Regardless she could out last us walking on the beach, in the Vienna Woods or up and down the Alps. She was even strong enough to walk two miles the day before we had to put her down, but we promised ourselves when the time came we could not, would not let her suffer. The vet said it was time, almost 17 and her body was starting to fail, with heavy hearts and tears in our eyes we sat with her as she slipped away.

We never saw ourselves replacing Kirby, she was a second mother to our son. I was an early subscriber to your thread and with all the great photo's and dog stories it made it really hard to be without a dog - something was missing. We gave it a year and when we were ready it was easy to rescue Darby - an internet picture of a sad looking heart worm infested dog tied to a chain link fence and within days of being euthanized. He is very different from the trailer queen, he is all boy and loves to roam the paddock at night checking out all the other cars.

I am a great fan of this tread. Been said several times before, it is amazing how many of us share and interest in garages and a love of dogs (or other pets). Thank you.

R1chy

R1chy,

Thanks for sharing. We are on our first lab - and I think we will probably have labs for the rest of our lives. Did you get your lab from the local lab rescue? That is were we got ours - he was a total mess, too - heart worm, kennel cough and whip worm. Thankfully so he recovered - total 85 lbs couch potato.

Funny how dogs make such a difference in our lives.

I never had a dog growing up, and didn't want one, and made that very clear to my wife...So my wife brought home a black lab from the local lab rescue.

She said we could take it back if I didn't like it. I knew that was never going to happen, so I gritted my teeth and went with it.

That was 8 years ago, and I am now a confirmed dog person. Maybe our lab is special (wait- of course he is!), but he has really added a lot to our life. I never knew how much fun a good dog was, and how quickly they become a full-fledged family member (or maybe how quickly we become pack members, I can never figure that one out).

Here's Jack, our Labrican-American!

I guess I didn't share mine yet, I thought I did, lol. My uploads kept failing so I'll try to add more later but here's one of my favorite shots!

This is Bruce, American Yellow Lab, going to be 6 years old this October. This dog has helped me get through so much in life and is truly my right hand.

Introducing Beretta. She'll be 2 in October. A rescue dog from Jacksonville Humane Society.
I hadn't had a dog since I was a kid, I'm 60 now and I didn't know what I was missing. First picture is when she first arrived. Second is all growed up guarding her Mule. She's about 70 lbs. and the friendliest guard dog you'll ever meet. She'll lick you to death.

Man, all the dogs on this page are such beauties. Bobby1, your story about Jenny cracking peanuts and liking wine reminded me of one time after we'd had a weekend BBQ and left a few cans of beer in a tin full of ice in the backyard. We came home Monday adter work to see 2 or 3 of the cans with puncture holes (from teeth!) in them and Dudley had obviously licked up all the beer as it came foaming out onto the patio. He was about 85 lbs and dead asleep on the lawn furniture. After that he LOVED beer. Sooner, my current Lab doesn't like beer or even soda. I guess he doesn't care for the carbonation.

Here is our rescued mutt who is 11 months old. He came from SC and might have some Catahoula Cur in him? This color seems to be a little more rare, his temperament is spot on though.

I am confirmed dog person now too - took me a while to get over picking up the "stinky" stuff :lol_hitti. Your lab is a virtual copy of hours - black with an aerodynamic racing stripe. I cannot get over how good a dog is - no matter how bad my day at work is the dog will be waiting for me wagging his tail.

This was Cocoa, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever that we adopted as a ten-week-old puppy in 1998. We lost her last Christmas Eve at the age of 13. She was the best dog I've ever had.

SAM_0012.jpg

This is Penny. She's about a year and a half old and she's a Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix. With what, we don't know, but the wrinkles around her mouth are kind of leading us to believe that there's some pit in there somewhere. She's a goofball though. We adopted her a couple of months ago. My wife saw her up for adoption with the Carlsbad humane society so we drove the three hours out there to get her.

Philippine floods were hard on dogs, too

The Philippines suffered greatly last week, when heavy and and never-ending monsoon rains flooded most of Luzon, the big island where the capital Manila (and my garage) is located. Many streets flooded, and whole communities were submerged. Many sought refuge on drenched rooftops. Hundreds of thousands were forced to evacuation centers on higher ground.

I wanted to show some heartwarming photos of dogs of how people looked after their pets and rescued those that had to be abandoned. These are poor folk, and the dogs the standard-issue, non-pedigreed variety. But the relationship between them is the same as ours for our garage buddies.

Dogs in evacuation centers

Just three more photos, taken in evacuation centers during the massive floods last week. Sadly, many of the evacuees lost all their possessions. But they saved their dogs and shared what they had with them.

Sorry for the delayed response, we were on vacation in Nova Scotia (see below). We used Homeward Trails rescue to get Darby and when we got him he had heart worm and sadly he had to have the full treatment to get over them. But as you can see it hasn't effected him at all.

In the first one Darby "shore" is having fun on the beach. Then after visiting LL Bean, Darby wanted to see if he could get the on the cover of their next catalog.

(Some photos are set as links because they are too huge for GJ so I thought it would be easier for you to view by clicking on the link)

My girl Anni (short for Tikaanni = "wolf" in eskimo)

She will be 1 year on aug 28th. She was born exactly on mine and my old lady's anniversary.. so "Anni" also short for "Anni- versary"

We got her from a guy in Richmond CA that rescued them from up north in CA. The owner of the mother said "They can die for all I care" so the guy we got her from waited til they could eat puppy food and be weened off mothers milk and rescued them. he hand fed all 9 of them at his house. He posted an ad on craigslist and as I was randomly looking for dogs on craigslist spontaneously one day I responded and soon after we went to visit and check out the puppys. I wanted a male, my girl wanted a female, so we asked for the female which was the last female there. but there was a catch. he said that another family was on their way to get her already. but they were supposed to be there 30 minutes ago he said.. so he asked if we would wait another 30 minutes and if they didnt show up that we could have her.. so we gladly waited and played with the pups.. after 30 minutes went by he got up and said "ok you guys can have her." and we paid him a small adoption fee, took a picture for his records and memory and took her home. She was potty trained that week. only messed in the house twice. she wines when she wants out and is very easy to train. she learned how to sit 3 days after we got her. so at 4 weeks and 3 days she already knew how to sit and stay.

She was one of nine puppies. Her mother was duel inseminated. Basically she got pregnant by 2 different males. 4 of her siblings look like her. 5 look like a border collie.

She is Wolf/husky:

Here are Anni's brother and sister that look like the border collie. (Anni is on the left. Her brother on top right, sister on bottom right) her sister looks like a combo of both breeds.

Moon,
My current best buddy is Sooner; he's in my avatar. Easily the smartest dog I've ever had and as loyal and good a dog as could possibly be.

But he started out being a chew machine. I've NEVER "gotten rid" of a dog in my life but he came awfully close. He chewed EVERYTHING you can think of until he finally pulled the license plate off my girlfriend's Audi TT! The U.S. plate was bolted to the plastic insert that covers the narrow, long cover for the Euro plate and he yanked the whole thing off and chewed the **** outta it.

It was our fault really. He had a LOT of energy and we left him home alone too much. We started calling him, "O Sooner bin laden" he was such a damned terrorist in our yard. All this to advise you not be too hard on Chewie. Take her out for loooong walks, run her, let her swim and play. Its all she truly wants. When Sooner passes on I will wait until I retire to get a new Labrador pup. Then I'll spend every minute with the little guy/gal.

Alfie and Lulu my 12 year old spotted hooligans helping dig the foundations and lay the foam. They will be garage dogs when the build is finished. Alfie HAS to be able to see me ALL the time. Lulu's days are numbered as she has a couple of growing tumors around her right ear, vet says there are too deep and too many nerves around there ruling out any surgery.Shes happy enough for now !
