Good looking pup.

I keep thinking about getting a boxer. Can't decide, also think about a yellow lab for my black.

My poor guy Riley was attacked last night. It was dark out, he went out in the backyard through the doggy door to do his business and came back in. He's always by my side but he ran straight the bedroom and jumped in bed. This is where he goes when he's scared, such as when there's thunder and lightning, so I knew something was up immediately. I went to check him out and saw he was licking his side. I grabbed a flashlight and looked, I was stunned. He had a gaping hole about the size of a silver dollar. Lots of pink meat exposed.

We took him to the 24 hour animal hospital and were there until 3:30 in the morning. They cleaned it up and gave him some staples. Sent us home with medicine and lots of instructions. There were a few little holes around the big one and the vet said it looked like the talons from a large bird made them.

We have lots of owls here and I've heard some stories about them being really aggressive from other dog owners we know. I even heard one guy, outside at night, had his bald head attacked by one. My gut tells me it was an owl.

So today we watch him and he's sore. Staples come out in 10-14 days. I hope he's not going to be scared of his yard. It must have really startled him when it happened.

Wow Balane, I've never heard of an owl that aggressive to a larger animal. I wonder if it was in "defense" of a nest? Hope he heals up well!

Thank you. We're just kind of deducing it was an owl but we don't know for sure. We also have a Chihuahua. One night I was in the back yard with him and I just felt like something was looking at us. I looked up and saw a rather large silhouette sitting on top of our grape vine lattice wall. I didn't really know what it was but it flew off and I could feel the wind coming from its wings. It was quite ominous really. I assume that was a large owl as well, it was silent. We have one large fir tree in our yard but I can't see any nests in it. The yard is surrounded by a six foot privacy fence. The vets believe the injury looked like it came from a large bird, it was night time, so it seems like the most likely assumption is an owl. Maybe it was sick or just really hungry. I know Riley will heal up quickly. He's very active and has had some cuts before that went away without a problem in short time. I'm mostly worried about what's going on in his head. A bird attack would have really startled him, he probably didn't even know it was coming. I don't want him to be scared of his own yard. We just want to get this behind us. We never let Rocky, the chihuahua, go out on his own at night. I'll probably have to start going out with Riley as well. I just don't want his carefree spirit to change.

Sammy, my loyal 7yo boxer.

Handsome dog. The picture to the left is Hudson, now a 1 1/2 year old boxer. He has an 11 1/2 year old sister (also a boxer).

Fiercely loyal to their family. For the last four decades, I have had a boxer, as a member of the family. I have never met one with a bad disposition, unless someone did something to it

If he's like our two nitwits it won't have long term effects.

One night we let them out and they run behind a shed where they found a skunk. Both of them got hit in the face. Such howling and carrying on! And that was just me and mom, you should have heard the dogs. :willy_nil

At any rate we thought the same thing you do, that the incident might scar them emotionally. Yeah right. The very next night we watched them when we let them out and they both ran directly to the shed, then went behind it. Obviously they didn't learn anything from the encounter.

Poor baby, hope he's not permanently changed by the bad experience. My next door neighbor lost his little Yorkie to what he thinks was an owl as well. He had seen a large Barred Owl in our vicinity, and he's quite sure that's what got the little guy. He just went out to do his business and disappeared, something he never did, and was always near the house. I loved the little guy as well and was pretty sad to hear of it, as we were buddies. He always ran up to me yapping and jumped up for me to catch him, when I was out.:p I found cougar tracks, while walking, and warned all my neighbors about that as well. I also keep a close eye on my two cats, when they are sitting at the doorwall in the summer. They're indoor-only cats, but I'm always afraid a big owl would plow right through the screen to get at them, not to even mention a cougar. Best wishes to Riley-that was my first cat's name.

Thank you everybody. It seems like MMB was correct about Riley forgetting the experience. He was out prowling the yard this morning a little and didn't seem too concerned. Last night he wanted nothing to do with it, I imagine because it was dark. If either of our pups has to go out at night I'll be right next to them with a bright flashlight.

It seems we're not alone either. He rode with me to the coffee stand yesterday morning, the gals there love him so I showed them what happened. Well today I was told they were discussing it with some other dog owning customers yesterday and there have been multiple recent attacks in the area including a missing little dog which is really sad. There's clearly one or more really ornery owls in the vicinity. If you want to know what's going on you just need to talk to neighborhood baristas, they're modern day bartenders.

Supposedly owls don't like blinking lights. There is a device for sale which you can put on the back of your house that blinks a bright light on and off. They claim this makes owls want to go somewhere else. I'm going to look into this. I don't think my neighbors would be too into this possibly, seems kind of irritating. Maybe I'll put a switch on the doggy door that turns the blinker on when they exit and then back off when they reenter. Just thinking about options now. I definitely don't want this, or worse, to happen again.

Thanks again, I know people in this thread feel like we do. When our pets hurt, we hurt.

Consider connecting it to a motion sensor.

I was told by a vet that dogs do one of two things about a bad experience. they either never do it again, or go in charging. This was after Kane and Tamara, my two big (but young) dogs literally shredded a porcupine, at night up camping. they of course paid the price... So off to the vet we went, (hand to go into town and find one... that was the vet that told me they would either shy away and not attack, or would go after every porcupine they ever found...

We took hundreds of quills out of those two, and I was still finding the occasional broke off barb working its way through their legs months later. they were lucky not to have lost an eye...

Sam, Sammy, or Sam I am is the best dog anyone could ask for. The only thing he doesn't do what we expected is play catch and swim. He is slowly getting better at catch although at nearly 2 years old it still doesn't excite him much. He is a great guard dog. He plays nicely with the kids and is overall very well behaved. I believe his behavior is 1 part his personally and the other part the time and energy we put into training him when he was very young.

Torque is a good shop dog in summer, the doors are open and he come and go as he please. In winter, not so much. Once in a great while, he will be happy and lay on his pillow. Most of the time, just stairs at the door, whining to leave. He started a new thing this year, being incredibly needy for attention. He normally isn't overly looking for it. He like being petted, but won't seek it out. In the shop he won't leave you alone. Not that I won't give it to him. But it's when I'm doing something, the nonstop pawing or standing on me when I'm on a creeper. I don't know if I spooked him with the torch, my torch for what ever reason, I can't shut off with out it popping. He doesnt like bangs like that. My other theory is its his way to annoy me to putting him in the house. He is pretty crafty and wouldn't put it pass him. I have posted pictures of Torque before, but how can I tell a story about him without a picture.

I would go with with the crafty option. Our two beagles are very crafty!

It's surprising the mind games he can play. For the longest time I said he was either very stupid, or really smart and a *****. Another relatively new thing is he acts like he can't jump in the truck or other high things anymore. He'll stand on the running board and just look at you waiting to be picked up. This funny because he generally doesn't like to be picked up. Yet if your loading the truck up to go somewhere and door is open, he'll jump right up there when you're not looking. Also we see signs he gets onto the dinning room table.

My chocolate lab chewed up a couple of beds and never really used them, I threw the last one out in the garage until trash day. Now i can't get her off of it, and she's always in the garage with me now.

This is Dulci.

Well, we got a new addition to the family Thursday night. A nine week old yellow lab named Bones. The grandaughter picked out teh name and he's found that hanging in her Micker chair is just right. Once he gets a bit older and house broken, I'll introduce him to the garage.

He hasn't replaced Bode, but he is helping with the healing.

Here is Zorro, a Border Collie mix. He was about 6 months old when we rescued him from the shelter last July after he was found running loose in a park with no tags or chip and quite boney. The first picture in the car is going home for the first time. The next picture is recent and he has gained about 20 lbs and filled out nicely. He learned to use the doggie door after two weeks along with shake hands and sit. He loves playing frisbee and running at the dog park. So far so good

I know that feeling. It's been 6 months since I put our dog George down and have had the puppy gustav for a few months now. I still miss George and not a day passes I don't think of him. That is going to be a great lab, best dogs!

Man, isn't it the truth. My Sooner (my avatar) passed December 14th last year and I'm not over it yet. I may never be over it I loved him so much. I was just on vacation last week and thinking how much he'd LOVE being with us, being in the water, etc.

Yes this little Lab puppy will absolutely own your heart if you let him. Be PATIENT with him. My experience with Labs is that they are physically mature in a year but emotionally it takes more than two years. They're terribly smart, curious and playful. They think the plant they just brushed by whose branch moved is "playing" and they will bite it. No destruction is intended they just want fun. Play with him, take him everywhere with you and socialize him. You'll never regret a day of doing it.

This is Daisy Mae. She’s a one year old Corgi.

Interestingly, Sooner's "step sister" is Bella who I am pretty sure is a Corgi mix, probably with a Dachshund. She was rescued from a Craigslist ad. The owners; two ladies, were going to have to give her to the pound! She's a wonderful little girl. Not the most beautiful dog outside but hugely beautiful inside. She'd likely have been euthanized and it breaks my heart to think of all the great, loving dogs like her that are put down daily. It's a tragedy.:(

For the fun of it, have her DNA tested and see what comes up.
