That's a cool marking with the heraldry looking 'Aristocrat of Tools' shield! I would fill that up with my Herbrand tools (or those that would fit, anyway) in a heartbeat, regardless of their application.

Had this for a while, again it is a very nice example, a shop tool.
Chrome seems really nice, not messed up at all. I guess it to be 50's-60's vintage.

Picked up these wartime Herbrand wrenches yesterday. Marked with the emergency alloy composition '8742'.

The first wartime Herbrand combos I've snagged.

I found this at a barn sale locally.

It's my first Herbrand.

Findlay, Ohio is just up the boulevard from me. ?

$ 1.00.

Jaws and such seem to be in decent shape.

Here is a little wrench roll of mostly herbrand. Couple of odd little other bits in there.

If the five (5) wrenches in their pockets on the left with 60* angle openings showing in Pic 1 are Herbrand, include any of the sizes and configurations I have listed below*, together with the wrench you've pulled out to show in close-up in Pic 2 you have the makings of a nice pre- or early wartime Herbrand ignition set there. (They dropped the 'VAN CHROME' marking when they dropped the composition in 1942/1943.)

*
13/64 x 15/64 (x 2, each end getting a 15* and 60* angle)
7/32 x 1/4 (" above)
9/32 x 5/16 (")
11/32 x 3/8 (")
716 x 1/2 (only one)

Well, funny you should ask, as the set in question came with some odd extras. I do however have the rest of the van chrome wrenches in my stash of herbrand stuff so here is the complete set.

I do not know what was in the last slot, maybe ignition pliers or a screwdriver. I threw my van chrome pliers in there and seems to fit

The largest military set called for 11 slots, for a mini-pliers and a pocket-clip screwdriver, and we have seen and many of us have collected them in that configuration from Duro-Chrome, Bonney and others. But I've had a Herbrand and a Cornwell set that only had 10 slots, just like yours. Personally, I don't think the US Ordnance Dept would've turned them away in 1944! :) Nice set!

I have the little J-10, and it is an absolute beauty.
Unfortunately, it works only in reverse. And it has no detent ball.
But still, it is sweet!

I'm not 100% on the time frame, but I assume late 40s into the 50s. The bullet style selector on SnapMom's J9 speed ratchet supports that timeline.

The earliest they appear would be 1950 as they aren't in the 49 catalog. I do have the 54 catalog and Snapmoms speeder is listed as a J9A so somewhere between 50 and 54 they made a change. The t-handle driver is also missing from the 49 catalog but is in the 54 catalog.

Here is a J-9A I just got. It doesn't have script on ratchet body like Snapmom's, instead it is engraved into faceplate. Herbrand must have changed their ratchet design across the board, going from 4 screws holding faceplate on, to 2. Head shape changed slightly, becoming more oval. The main forging itself is basically entirely different from the J-9.

As previously posted in this thread:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=277900&highlight=HERBRAND

This particular Herbrand set was a bit of a mystery to me. I figured this was just a hodgepodge of 1/4" pieces, carburetor tools and a big wrench...:headscrat
After a little research though, I was surprised find this as Herbrand's version of a carburetor tool set.

Today at the local flea market I found this pair of Herbrand battery terminal lifter pliers. They are in amazingly good conditon for a battery tool! They come apart easily at the slip joint and the part that presses on the battery lug has grooves in it that are used to clean up the inside of the terminal.

I am also posting a page from my 1939 General Tool catalog that shows this tool.

I am used to the "gear puller" type of battery terminal puller, and this pair is the first "plier-type" terminal tool I remember seeing.
