Just keep in mind that the mark 1 wave is not compatible with the tool accessories. Finding this out first hand cost me $40. Still think both waves are awesome though....

I do like the idea of the micra being able to have it in a shirt pocket would be useful

My buddy's supertool. The pliers are much larger than the wave's, it has replaceable wire cutters, a few fixed flat heads and fixed Phillips, knives come out from the inside of tool, not in the folded position like the wave. All tools are locking on both wave and supertool. Wave is nice in that the drivers are not fixed, but rather take bits, and Lm has some really nice kits for cheap...

I have one of the first Leatherman PST's that my wife gave me in the early eighties (before we were married, and she lived in Portland OR, where they were available only locally). It came with a leather sheath (that looks handcrafted) and the tool itself shows amateurish metalwork when compared to today's mass-produced models.

I seem to recall that old Tim Leatherman missed the boat on patenting his multitool, because the knock-offs started appearing soon after the PST was introduced. I think that The Oregonian had an informative article on the introduction of the Leatherman tool and its problems.

If you want to see it, i'll try to find it. I recall I last used it at a Boy Scout camp (with my sons) in Idaho a few years ago.

If you could find it, yeah I'd like to see it and the sheath. Probably others would too.

I have a "Tool Adapter" from an original Leatherman Wave. It clamped between the pliers with the handle closed, and allowed you to use standard 1/4" hex screwdriver bits with it. I do not think it will fit the new style Wave (which I had my Wave replaced with under warranty years ago).

I'd love to see some pictures of your early PST. Those hit the U.S. market in late 1983. A catalog called "Early Winters" was the earliest to advertise the tool for sale, followed soon after by Cabela's.

For anyone interested in it, you can see the what is purported to be the very first PST sold which is in the collection of Wolf Schulz-Tattenpach (Germany). He claims that he received it from Tim Leatherman in May 1983:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/531577-Leatherman-PST-001-(1983)

That's just like mine, except the file doesn't have a fingernail hold-groove. Mine also has the crude sheath that looks like it was fashioned at someone's workbench with a pair of tin-snips. The metalwork on mine was also kind of rough, with lots of buffing abrasive still on it (it made your hands dirty when first handled).

Heres mine as mentioned earlier, leatherman Wave in a case with bit holder and bits. Have had it for probably about seven/eight years maybe.

I have 2 of the original waves that i got as gifts and never use. one in a brown leather sheath and one in a black fabric sheath.

Im pretty sure leathermans are NOT MADE IN THE USA they were sued over it. Mine say usa but i think the law suit claimed some parts were made in mexico and they were assembled in the usa....i could be wrong that was a while ago and ive slept since than

Does anyone carry them out of the case and either in their pockets or slid on with a clip but still inside of the pocket?

I really love the SOG ability to clip into the corner of a pocket and not be visible.

I'd stick with my sog after carrying my wave for a day I definetly want to switch.

I have unfortunately lost a couple if Waves. It was getting expensive so I picked up a few of the sidekicks for ~$20 each last Christmas and haven't lost one yet. Go figure.

Yea this one I got for 25 at the local hd, I'm kinda worried I'll lose it...it's fallen off my belt a few times already so I'm thinking of giving it a home in my pliers drawer...

I stuck with Leatherman. I held a SS Skeletool in Basspro and fell in love with it. So I ordered a Skeletool CX and have been carrying it for a few days now. Definetly the new EDC

I also wrapped some MiniParacord on the knife of my wave for easier knife opening with my thumb.

Timmy's leatherman, an original I do believe. It's been with him for 17 years he says, and it looks pristine...we know why because he never uses it. He still manages to leave it behind at work, so I figured I'd document it's existence.

The XYL gave me a new Leatherman Wave for xmas, I've have had the two original Leathermans for 30 years or so, I got the stainless steel original for Xmas in 1984 right after they first came out, my best friend gave me the black
oxide version for Xmas a couple years later.
Below is a pix of the 2 originals and the new Wave, I really like it, especially
the locking tools, I can't tell you how many time I've been bit by the old one's
tool folding up at exactly the wrong time :willy_nil

.

I carry a leatherman everyday at work and home. I started with a Gerber because I liked the spring loaded pliers, however I broke the knife and when I tried to replace them I found Gerber's quality went down hill on their tools. As I looked for a replacement I realized leatherman has spring loaded models and purchased a sidekick. It's a great tool with good quality. I've been impressed with how strong they are. Below is a picture of my leathermans.
I currently carry the OHT because I need to sharpen the blade on my sidekick. I prefer the sidekick, the OHT is nice, but it tends to get caught on more things while hanging on my belt. I bought the squirt because it was neat and hard to find, but it isn't big enough for daily carry.
