I really like it, I just wish MAC would make a 3/8" version. I have the DeWalt version of the 3/8" 12V (DCF902) and it's my first-grab impact wrench. Can't figure out why MAC has not released a 12V brushless 3/8" impact wrench. Out of curiosity I took them apart to see if the motors would swap as they look practically identical, but they don't - the 3/8" DeWalt nose cone assembly won't seat properly in the 1/4" MAC clamshell. Boo.

My BWP038 randomly took a dump, I haven’t even used it that much either and that’s no lie. It’s under a year old though so I guess I need to send it in.

Broke this guy out last night, don’t think I’ve posted it here yet. MCM848

Very nice! How does it do on battery life?

Just and update on my 3/8 Impact BWP038, sent it in to Mac (At my expense) and received it back a few weeks later fixed and ready to rip. They replaced the trigger/switch.

I did a roof and a hood, and still had two out of three bars left on the battery.

eBay score, pretty happy with the kit for $125. Since this impact driver has the same motor from the DeWalt DCF902, I’m going to swap the 3/8” anvil into it and make the MAC 3/8” brushless impact wrench that doesn’t exist.

Finished making my own MCF902. Took the guts of a DCF902 and installed them into the MCF801 clamshell. The “precision drive” mode on the impact driver functions a bit differently than the “precision wrench” mode on the impact wrench, so I had to move the circuit board over as well. The covers for the mode switches on top were direct swaps as well. Tested and functions perfectly - I have no idea why MAC doesn’t release this tool… It’s my favorite impact wrench (even more so now in chemical-resistant MAC red and black) and covers 90% of what I need an impact wrench for.

As I assumed would be the case, the internals of the MAC/DeWalt 12V impact driver and impact wrench are identical.

The drive assemblies between the impact driver and impact wrench are also identical aside from the 1/4” hex collet and 3/8” square drive anvil. Impact driver on the left, impact wrench on the right:

My 12/20v lineup.

JavyLSU, would it be possible to just swap the anvil and head from the DCF902 into a MCF801?

I have been using my 801 as pictured above, with a 1/4 socket adapter and think I should just purchase a 901 instead, which leaves me with an unused 801.

You can certainly swap the anvil from the 902 to the 801 - however the “precision wrench” and “precision drive” modes are different between the two. From the manual:.

Precision Drive mode will work as a screwdriver in light applications, before hesitating as the screw head reaches the workpiece, and then (if required) start a slow controlled impact to ensure the head ends perfectly flush. This mode is for light duty screwdriving applications. If the tool will not drive a fastener in Precision Drive mode, please select Lo Mode which will give the additional power required.

For Precision Wrench, when set in forward the tool will fasten until impact begins. The tool will then pause for 0.5 seconds before continuing to impact, providing the user with greater control and reducing the chance of overtightening or damaging material.
When set in reverse, the tool will impact at a normal speed. Upon sensing that the fastener has broken free, the tool will cease to impact and will reduce speed to help prevent “run- off” of loose hardware.

I initially swapped the anvil only, but noticed the difference in operation of the “Precision” modes between the tools when I tested it on a lug nut. The impact wrench goes full power in reverse until it senses a loose fastener. The impact driver however does a very slow, weak impact in reverse while in this mode - not ideal for an impact wrench. That’s when I decided to do the “full transplant” between the two, since I use this impact wrench in Precision Wrench mode 95% of the time and wanted to retain that functionality.

Now I understand. I was very confused when I saw your for sale ad with a Mac Tools DCF902 which I've wanted forever.

I still have no idea why MAC hasn’t done this themselves…
I just looked at your for sale listing, you stated that you cannot by the 3aH Mac oil resistant batteries on, are these https://www.mactools.com/products/mbr124 not oil resistant?

Just wanted clarification for future reference. If I had some extra cash to put toward tools right now I would purchase your set immediately, been wanting the 1/4" impact and screwdriver for awhile. Unfortunately my project truck is eating up any extra cash at the moment.

Yep, those are it - my MAC dealer says he can’t get those anymore. When he orders them, they send him DeWalt batteries. They’re exactly the same as the MAC battery (as long as it’s the new oil-resistant DeWalt version) it just has a DeWalt label on it.

Are they black and red or yellow?
