this is my top tray from the 80's before I moved up to my big box.

Red = SAE
Blue = Metric

Been painting my tools ever since I saw my old man doing it.

service truck use is hard on any toolbox, overloaded drawers, and constant shifting loads will destroy a box very quickly

i've been in and out of service trucks for about 1/2 the time i've been wrenching.

i'm in my 4th truck in 10 years at this dealership.

How well do the road chests from Snap on and others hold up?

Those are called Tool Tags. I got them from the Eastwood company probably 20 years ago. I saw them on a show called Shadetree Mechanic. You can see the 10mm is starting to wear off. I've tried getting some more but can no longer find them.

I knew I'd seen these somewheres, not exactly the same thing, but same idea.

The majority of my sockets are SAE as I originally bought my box from a retired diesel mechanic. I am still lacking a full set of 6pt 1/2 drive metric sockets , and many 12pt 1/2 drive metric sockets . I only use metric currently. I have been maintaining my toyota pickup from 113k to 255,000 current miles since highschool.

Top of my box, 1/4-1/2 with maybe a couple 3/4. Mostly metric, mix of SK, Craftsman, Snap-on, Mac, Matco, Gearwrench, Pittsburg Pro, and others.

My impact drawer, Proto, Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Pro, and Husky:

I have a set of SK 1/2 SAE in my portable box and a set of Pittsburgh Pro 3/8 Metric in my truck. Somewhere around the shop I have a set of cheap spline drive sockets that have come in handy on messed up bolts.

couple problems with most real road chests, they are too wide and/or deep for most service bodies.
and way more money than i'd ever spend on a box for a service truck.

they are pretty much non existant on the used market around here.

Work Box: a mix of CM, SK, New Britain, and a GW 1/4" set, I have since re-organized and added even more. Impacts are mostly SK & CM with some NAPA, Proto, Williams mixed in.
