Finished today my blueprint cabinet conversion into a toolbox, lots of storage space, built like a tank (roller bearing drawers, nice sheet metal, good old quality), now i can focus on my "real" projects again .....

That looks sweet man, can we get a pic with drawers open for full effect?
Also, did you make that spray can rack on the side yourself?

Thanks, here are some pictures with the drawers open (still working on getting it organized, got 8 rolls of anti-slip liner sitting here....), as for the can holder, nope, didn't make it myself, i've ordered it at Amazon and that thing is great, i am ordering another one for the other side tonight, i just pop riveted it on the side wall......

The drawers are really strong (made for holding a 2" high stack of paper of the foot print of the drawer....) as you perhaps can see on the pictures, they don't bend down, they come straight out, even when they are all the way out (with all the ratchets / sockets in it......)

DON'T DO IT (it's an addiction, i have 5 now, and just started about 2yrs ago.) But, it's incredible to see the engineering art work which went into the old jukeboxes.....i received the one in the pic in a really sad sad state (stored for years in an old barn) and just got it finished (95%) two days ago....

oh man, impressive balance. It's hard to imagine that a blue print cabinet can take that much weight. What brand is it?

I honestly don't have a clue about the brand, but i have one sitting in my office (and it never gets used anymore, all CAD files (i am a design engineer) and that's where the idea grew in my head....)....they pretty often pop up on Craigslist....Lot's of companies are glad if you pick them up for small bills (HEAVY !!!)

Thanks for replying, I might have to steal your idea instead of buying a traditional toolbox. I'll keep an eye out for one.

I am sure i am not the first guy who did that.....feel free to contact me with any questions..... I am really really pleased with the storage space, looks (even my wife, and that means a lot....hahaaaahaha) and strength of the toolbox....

I was looking around for Craftsman, snap-on, matco..etc...etc..toolboxes, but none of them even came close to the built quality / storage space of this one...i like the depth of the drawers a lot.

I just reorganized four of my Kennedy 520 series tool boxes to take advantage of the extra drawers last weekends 7 drawer 520 for my old "taps" three drawer box.

Works out much better. I also swapped around so another three drawer got emptied, and a lot of miscellaneous junk in a real old (1930's?) 7 drawer got put in better locations and that box became free. some of the miscellaneous went to one of the freed up 3 drawers and all my leather working junk got put into the other 3 drawer. Basically musical boxes., but the results are worth it.

Here is the "new" box for taps, dies extraction tools and Helicoils:

SAE taps, including a number of boxed sets with taper, plug and bottoming taps.
attachment.php

My limited supply of metric taps, dies, and Helicoil stuff.
attachment.php

Pipe taps from 3/4 down to 1/8"
attachment.php

EzOuts, and tap extractors. I also have a boxed set of tap extractors coming on the next post... (too many pics...)
attachment.php

SAE Dies/chasers and a home made chaser for Ford 3/4 ton rear floater axle nut threads.
attachment.php

Handles and a thread fixing file.

Numbered Screw taps and a few dies, and more boxed set, of 3...:

The tap and Die box continued:

This is what I started with over 30 years ago. I bought the box, only partially filled, at a flea market for I think $10, but I asked him to throw in all the loose taps and dies he had jumbled on his table to get the full asking price. he said yes! so I wound up with a complete set when all was said and doe, as well as a number of spares and a few outside the sizes the seat had.

The set goes from 1/4" to 1/2" in both Fine and coarse and also has a 1/8 pipe thread tap and die, and I added a 1/4" die in the lower right- corner after re-drilling the gouged out pocket a PO had put in. This is still my main "go to" set for most threading issues.

attachment.php

The top of the tap and die box has a dozen or so Helicoil repair kits, a boxed set of numbered screw taps and dies (Military issue I believe) that I got last weekend, another boxed set of tap extractors from 7/8 down to I think #6 or 4, and one of my sets of pattern punches. the wood boxed set also lands in here on top of everything else.

attachment.php

The second 7 drawer box is the old one, which I believe is from the 30's. Leather handle, square reinforced corners, and this old logo located on the inside of the front cover:

attachment.php

The Kennedy signature is also inside under the top cover and centered:
attachment.php

What I re-purposed this box for is mostly the tools I have that are too small for daily regular use. Many of these have shown up in the Tiny Tools thread. Plenty of room for growth in this box! The bottom drawer, mostly cutting tools:

attachment.php

Most of my small hammers:

Small Pliers and wrenches:

And more to come in the third and last post:

Man I really like what you have done with the blueprint cabinet. I have 3 of these... it is truly amazing how much weight they can hold. It is the same with the old file cabinets and "tanker" metal desks... they just don't make stuff like they used to.

I am telling you, they are stout. This is one of the 3 that I have, pic is from when I got it:

PICT0140.jpg

I have one of the small top drawers loaded with 3/4 & 1" drive ratchets, sockets, and extensions... who knows how much that drawer weighs, but I acknowledge that it is WAY past what it was designed to do. There is a almost 3' long Wright 1" ratchet in there! I placed a Craftsman 3/8 drive 1/2" socket on top of the black 2 1/2" socket in the center of the drawer for size reference.

The Tiny tools box continued:

More pliers (mostly)

another hand vise and a tiny 4" square:

Ignition wrenches and the start of a 1/4" drive set for this box, as well as a watch/clockmaker's multi wrench; actually the Craftsman are a second spare set so this is to make a small amount of room in the main tool box.

attachment.php

And lastly, some driver sets, and some loose ones:

whats the trick to finding those blueprint cabinates? i rarely have ever seen them forsale

Living in an area that had/has a lot of engineering in it mostly. The area I live in had tons of high tech and military work, so they are generally common, and sometimes free. (some people don't understand the supply and demand rules and try to get a kings ransom for them. those go unsold...)

Now that most of the drawings are going "paperless" and originals don't need to be saved physically, these cabinets become surplus. Even old drawings get scanned and digitized and the originals shredded...

Here are my two main tool boxes:
attachment.php

I keep my wrenches, sockets, and mechanical tools in the oak tool box, and my hammers, chisels, screw drivers, and bigger tools in the bigger black one with the beat-up paint job.

It seems like you all are into wrenches, so I'll show you what I've got in my oak toolbox. I think you all will get a good laugh out of it. I still get plenty out of a lot of these old wrenches, pliers, and sockets and use them all the time:

In my opinion it's not all about the tools you own, it's about the creativity and the skills of the guy who uses it......

Well, I'm not terribly creative or talented either. But everybody's got to start from something!

What I like about a lot of these wrenches, though, is that they got convenient sizes on each end. My 3/8 x 1/2 open-end wrench is almost like my right hand when working on anything small. But then there's the oddballs like the old hex cap stuff and seldom-used 32nd's-sizes that I keep just because I know I'd end up needing them for something if I threw them out.

What I've got my eyes out for now is some US-size box wrenches and some metric stuff. I can get a lot of stuff on my Jeep with these, but every once in a while, I'll have to use a few of my dad's metric wrenches and sockets to get at some things.

One thing I'd like to do, once I get my hands on a table saw, is take some oak and make an organizer for all my sockets. My ratchet acts as a good divider for now, but I'd still like to have a neat way to keep them so they don't get mixed up. None of them are labeled either, so it's real easy to mix up the small ones when they get jumbled around in the tool box.

Buy or make you some wrench rolls. The store easily and keep the wrenches organized. When you are ready to use them just roll it out and the wrenches are in order. I use them in my truck box and wouldn't be without them.
