Mr HS, that is one fabulous piece of carpentry. My hat is off to you. I kept meaning to post on your original 'Woody' thread.
One ??, being in a chair, how do you see into the top compartment?
I know where stuff is at and I can pull myself up on my feet and stand for a few moments.

wow thats a lot more than i was hoping. Wonder if the 3/4" Birch that home dope sells would be sufficient. I'm guessing you went through 15-20 sheets?

I'd love to take on something like that though i'd probably leave out the top compartment to make it pull double duty as a work bench instead. Your finished product is definitely inspiring.
I went through about 8 sheets of 3/4 oak, 8 sheets of really nice pine 3/4 plywood, lots of pine 1X4, 1X6,1X8 and 1X12. The killers stuff was the hardware and related stuff not to mention all the sandpaper involved. Every board in the drawers had to be sanded round on the tops, every board had to be sanded smooth. Then finish materials, drawer liner, 5 boxes of screws, glue, casters, bolts, That stuff really adds up. I was looking to do it for about 800-1000 dollars.

I saw some really nice Birch plywood that was about 12 dollars cheaper per sheet. In the big picture it isn't that much more to do it in oak. It really surprized me it cost so much to build. I have no regrets as I love it

Might as well add mine, KRL722 & KRL791:

Yes, very nice collection. It's what I'm striving for without owing the SnapOn man my first born. How long have you been building that set?

On another note, Indy, it's kind of annoying when people quote a bunch of pics like that right after the original post.

Padding the post count can also be done without making me scroll through the exact same pics over and over again

I agree its incredibly annoying. Ecspecially when a long post is quoted and someone says "nice tools." Everyone in this thread has nice tools

Not that old, this toolbox, but I have had it for some 30 years now. I used it as my sole toolbox for many years. It held all the handtools I needed when I restored an old Lotus in 1981-82. Life was simpler then, or perhaps I just hadn't the time yet to collect all the tools I think so indisensable now!

Apparently, a large number of these Stahwille rollcabs were imported in the 60s. I am told the local Mercedes Benz dealer used them in its workshop. By the time I was looking for one, I could only find this one, NOS, in a gasoline station owned by a car enthusiast.

It originally had a medium green hammered-finish. I painted it Ferrari colors perhaps 20 years ago. The Ferrari chassis tag is a recent addition; I had the tag and had to rivet it to something.

It still rolls and works well. I use it more as a cart now, and its swinging drawers with compartments are handy for parts removed or to be installed.

CameraUploads247.jpg

i bought a set of kennedy's with the same roller cab, and a 10 or 12 drawer top, back around 1979. they were my working toolboxes for several years when i 1st got started pulling wrenches.

not too many people start with a $10,000 box.

Wow, Monte, that's exactly how my Rollmaster was painted, down to the red "Rollmaster" script (I should try to paint that too. perhaps in gold to match the trays). Do you know up to when Stahwille produced the Rollmaster?

I never thought anyone would remember the Rollmaster, so I was quite surprised to see your post. But, of course, you are from Germany. What makes Garage Journal even more amazing is that I just found a thread on "Stahwille Rollmaster":

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45377

I accumulated tools over the years, Monte. They are mostly American, though I have a very nice pair of large, black Dowidat adjustable wrenches that a plumber who needed money left with my mother! I had wanted to return them to the plumber but that was 30 years ago!

Yep... that how i started with small box from sears... when i started to get more serious and do more heavy lines, i had jump many boxes until i has my KRL1203 and KRL1003 which i am happy with it and stay with it!!!

i started with my kennedy boxes, added a small SO side box, then 2 :shocking: 3 drawer SO middle boxes,
i traded everything but the small side on my kr 550/555,
then added a matching SO side, then 2 more SO sides, another KR roller cab, a MAC side, and another 26" SO roller cab.

at least it was (fairly) easy to move. :lol_hitti

Can anybody recommend a tool box brand that doesn't have that initial 'pull' on the drawer. Hard to explain, but most people with a craftsman will know what I mean.

Like there is the locking handle that you compress and pull the draw, but its like there is something MORE locking the slides in place and require quite a significant pull to open the drawer.

All I want is a nice toolbox, ball bearing off course, that has the locking handle on each drawer. I should be able to press the handle in with 2 fingers and slide the drawer open. No tugging!

I just bought a snap on top box ($250) and matches with my husky bottom box, I wish I had a bottom snap on box.

There are some very impressive collections around here. Mines a lot more modest than most, but here it is;

Almost thiry years ago, this was my first jump up from a handbox;

Reminds me of the kitchen cabinets my wife was looking at before. I was amazed; my tool boxes paled in comparison with the new kitchen drawers she looked at. They pulled out easily and very smoothly, and some even had a feature that allowed you to push a drawer in, and the the drawer would softly slide closed by itself. "Like a Mercedes Benz self-closing door," the salesman said. One brand (Bulthaup) had an all-stainless, industrial-looking series that I said would be great for my workshop.

The problem is that they are hugely expensive compared to our tool boxes!

Took my grandfather's old craftsman toolbox that he had for many years and refurb'd it. It doesn't hold all my tools but I enjoy being able to keep it around. This thing was full of automotive tools from his Buick days: screws, nuts, fuses, keys, wrenches...it was crazy. Even some OLD oil, lol.

After emptying most of it:

Still a bit wet:

It took a bit of work to get the dirt out of the crevices, some sanding all around and the handles were filthy. I decided the best finish to use on it was spray-on bedliner, I wanted something durable that wouldn't chip and so far it has worked out nicely.
Nothing spectacular as far as most toolboxes on here are concerned, but I enjoy being able to have a use for it.
