Just picked up a new snap on rollcab and topbox combo for work after seeing it on this months deals flyer (my dealer had this one in his van so i didn't even have to wait)

IMG_0318.jpg

was going to hold out for a extreme green one, but there not often seen here (we don't seem to get the full snap on range?) glad i went for the blue now though

About time really, my old one was getting to small, i did have it a long time though, 10+ years isn't too bad i guess (mac economiser 2000 topbox, and a snap on rollcab, cant remember the part numbers offhand right now, was a pre roller bearing one though)

all the more space to fill with more tools....... :lol_hitti

would have kept my old one to replace the beat up freebie box i have at home, but £600 trade in is a really good deal, id never manage to sell it for that

Go easy on me, I just turned 21 and this is my first box. I just started collecting tools about a year or two ago. My Dad has $30k in Snap On stuff at his shop but it stays there for the most part, so I started my own set.

Craftsman Heavy Duty Ball Bearing box, paid under $300 for all three pieces. I started with a Craftsman 263 piece set. After using some Matco 88 tooth ratchets I had to upgrade, so I picked up a 3/8" and 1/2" Gearwrench for $39, and the stubby 3/8" Gearwrench for $14 shipped. I got the Duralast for free with my rewards points because I didn't have any flex handled ratchets, and the Snap On I got for free last week with a broken reverse lever (got a new one for $0.74 shipped). The Pittsburgh ones were just on a whim because I heard a few positive things and I had to make the shipping worth it on another purchase. I'm probably going to leave them at the shop where I help out just to see how they hold up under heavy use.
photobucket-4774-1331272003708.jpg

Just got my Harbor Freight socket rails today, I moved the extensions/swivels down a drawer, but they'll probably go back up with the ratchets when the Pittsburgh's are gone and my longer extensions get here. Might put deep sockets in there then. Probably going to pick up some swivel 1/4" sockets too. Impact sockets are going up top when they get here tomorrow.

photobucket-4868-1331271989807.jpg

Screwdrivers, $17 for all the Craftsman ones and $3 for the others
photobucket-2083-1331272016402.jpg

Wrenches, the Pittsburgh ones I paid $7 for the day I discovered Harbor Freight. I definitely want some 19-30mm wrenches soon.
photobucket-4663-1331272030705.jpg

Ratchet Wrenches, about $50 for the set and awesome. I really like Gearwrench stuff.
photobucket-4855-1331272044030.jpg

Pliers, paid $8 for all the orange handled HF ones just to get a start a while back, the rest are better quality that I got from a friend.
photobucket-4549-1331272057412.jpg

I also have a small Lincoln welder, vacuum pump, electrical odds and ends, IR impact, air chisel, air ratchet, air grinder, porter cable grinder, porter cable buffer, torque wrenches, pry bars, hammers, C clamps, drill, drill bits, picks, allen keys, etc in the other drawers but they're not organized as nicely

Looking at these pictures myself I'm a bit ashamed of the number of Harbor Freight tools. I would like to pick up more American made items, but for now they do the job. I'm pretty happy overall though, considering what I received as gifts and how many items I got on sale I have about $1k in everything combined, and it has paid for itself many times over already.

Finally picked up the top box.

Nice setup, Im looking at those same ones. Can I get the model number of both boxes and the exact measurements of them as well? The bottom one I need to know the height without the wheels to see if it fit under a bench I am planning.

On top are my speakers I bought from a DJ, I just plug my phone in them and I can bust eardrums in the shop if I want!:rocker:

Is it just me or does it appear that most of the big dollar Snap On boxes are filled with big dollar Snap on tools that look they have never been touched by human hands never mind been worked to earn their keep? My boxes and tools look well worn because I actually use mine rather than just polish them to show them off.

So, do you think these don't get used?

Some folks take care of (and take pride in) their tools and don't like beating them up just because they "use them".

No, they actually do look used. I'm not talking about beating up tools but even sparing use causes marking and alot of these collections dont appear to have any marks at all.

Everything looks better in photos. Just the way it is. Unless you get to see close-ups or high-res images of everything - they'll look to be in better shape than they actually are. Just like cars that are for sale online.

There are a few guys, mostly mechanics, that post pics of their work boxes and, yeah, their tools are dirty. That's to be expected when you're working and getting paid by book time.

The rest of us, you know, weekend warriors and homeowners, tend to keep our stuff clean.

I can't fault someone for clean tools. Can't fault them for dirty tools, either.

I recently put a new 1/2" MDF top on my roller when I built the hutch for it (my welder is clean, BTW ) and commented to my wife about how the top was now dirty. It's stained, has glue on it, and even became subject to a small fire when I welded the skins on the sides of the hutch.

Her reply? "Well, if it's getting dirty that means you're getting work done."

All of my tools are like that. I don't mind them getting dirty, but I won't let them stay dirty, either. The only difference is I can't simply wipe the grease/oil/glue off the MDF like I can the tools.

All of my tools that get dirty get wiped down before they get put away. Just how I do things. I don't think that a moment of laziness is a good excuse for getting dirty hands when I need a tool at a later time.

...and, to make matters worse, I organize them. To the point that everything is aligned (parallel) in the drawers.

I used to think the same way. But, seeing the posts here from people that like tools as much as I do has changed that. I have a lot of tools and boxes, I like seeing what others have for tools and boxes... I'm into tools. Doesn't matter if the guy collects them and doesn't use them - he can still have a set of badass tools and toolboxes.
If I could afford to have a badass box and virgin set of nice tools that I didn't have to use, but could just collect them, organize them and clean them, I would. Props to the guys that can.
But, I am a tool freak.

I'm referring to boxes like the one in post#6513.

Yup, that's clean.

Can't fault the guy, but I can say I'm a bit jealous. Some nice, well-organized tools there.

My stuff is on the same page as that one, in post 6516, and shows how I keep my stuff, but a more current pic of the way things are now is in 6592.

Those are by all means the biggest speakers I have ever seen on top of a box

I agree, I am not a pro tech but my company produces machinery and I wrench them occasionally if needed. Most of my wrenching is done at home though. I am one of those who clean and wipe tools before putting them back into storage. I try not to abuse my (or company) tools either as I am the one who has to pay to replace them. I rather get the right tools for the job if I can - better way to spend money IMHO.

Ps. I would never leave my car(s) to a shop that obviously don't care about their own expensive tools or equipment. They cannot be trusted to care about mine.

Some time back we had a member with 'the great wall of china' aka a wall of 13 drawer HF boxes like that... pehaps we can call the snapon wall "border partrol" :eyecrazy:

All owned by one guy - the shop owner. You can also see another SO box peeking out on the far right side the pic.

Let's not get this started again. I'd hate to see this thread get locked down.

Let's agree that some people on this thread have the time and feel the need to keep their tools very clean. Good for them. There are even probably a few that keep their tools as a museum and I enjoy seeing them. However the ones I enjoy the most are the shops and boxes that are obviously used.

Of course when I take pictures of something I usually clean it up first.

And some people earn their money by other ways than wrenching and they might buy their tools for some other reason (wrench on their own machines for fun and relaxation for example). Those people have no need for their tools "to earn their keep" or infact earn anything. So, their tools get used but obviously not so much as the pros. By keeping their tools in top condition they might last for a lifetime - and more. In the mean time they happen to look great clean, if somebody has a problem with that is only his problem.

That looks like a practical joke waiting to happen. I'd be tempted to switch box #2 with #4... #5 with #1, etc.
