Got to say I,m looking forward to the new 4c sports car, Always been a secret admirer of Alfa Romeo.

Do you get a cool uniform to wear at work?

They always seem to do things with a bit of style :D

We used to have grey trousers and a red short sleeved shirt with Italian badges on the sleeve. Wasn't keen on it, felt a bit silly! Just plain black trousers and a black Alfa polo shirt now thankfully.

Whiskey drawer? Is that the narrow/deep drawer in the center top? What do ya normally put in a drawer like that anyway (besides your whiskey)?

Yup thats the drawer. They story I always heard is that started as feature on machinist boxes for holding the machinist handbook. A lot of time the drawer can be lock byself for storing stuff like your wallet. I have a soft spot for those style and use my drawer for holding RTV and locktite.

Still trying to piece my whole set back together and some stuff like my Impact Swivels are being borrowed by a friend. Not having my KRL is a bit tough to get used to, but I realize now just how much space was taken up in my main drawer with Kits that I could have kept somewhere else.

You guys have great collections. This is my extremely modest toolbox:sad:It houses the primary tools I use to maintain my vehicles. Bottom pullout shelf has my cherished, coveted Dewalt impact with Craftsman sockets. They have saved me countless times:bowdown: I am transitioning towards Snap-on tools;) I love this forum-You guys are making the General toolbox look more and attractive with every post:D

That's my idea of a garage! Always liked the whiskey drawer on a top box.

Is that a brake pad hanging on the left side of the box?

Coach

Thanks for the compliment on my garage! :D

I like those drawers too. Yes it is what's left of a brake pad off a friends truck, NO friction material left on it at all and it's blued to boot! :scared:

I use the "whisky drawer" in the top box for RTV, Loctite, Never seize, graphite, etc. The one in the bottom box has some of my electrical stuff in it.

I havent posted on here in a while, but have spent some time looking for some organization ideas. I envy you guys that have the time and patience to organize everything perfectly....

I quickly filled up my Epiq and bought the little Cornwell box. That is now stuffed and I gotta change it up a little. I know I need to buy some side lockers to put some of the big items in but they are a little rich for my taste right now. Anyhow, this is what it looked like the last time I could see the top of my toolbox... I may take some drawer pics next time I organize it lol.

not too shabby for a DIY'r

many of the tools & boxes you see belong to "pro" wrenches, and have been accumulated over many years.
i started buying my own tools in '76 still in HS when i started my machinists apprenticeship, and started pulling wrenches at const eq dealerships in '84.

by the time you hav tools at work, in a service truck, at home, and some more stashed in my trail truck, it gets to be somewhat overwhelming at times.

That is such a good looking box, but when I looked at it the way it was built scared me for durability. How long have you had it? How have you liked it so far?

I couldn't walk away from the price I got on it. I have only had it since August and it has sat in my garage most of the time unused. I bought it for college next year and wanted some new tools so I needed something bigger. I like it except for the fact you have to have the top open to open any drawers on the top chest. A little annoying at times. It seems pretty solid and my only other complaint is the drawers and how they open and close. When it was first new they where hard to get open because of the style of latch(I guess you could call it). But they have worn in now so it is easier.

I was unaware of that. Thanks for letting me know.

If its a simple arrangement in the internals you can get around this by opening all drawers with the top open and then close the top before the drawers. This has worked for me in the past whatever way the mechanism was arranged in the back of the box. You just have to remember to close the top first if you know what I mean.

I have little to no experience with top dollar truck boxes, but I thought the Kobalt stainless boxes seemed very well built. You certainly get your monies worth out of the thick stainless they use compared to some other boxes in the same price range.

on my craftsman box I was thinking about pulling the pin out of the locking mechanisms. that way I wouldn't have the top open but then if I did that it would be hard to lock.

Didn't Snap On used to offer some top boxes with a lever that locked the drawers in place independent of the lid position? When the lid was closed it would cover the lever so it couldn't be accessed if you wanted it all locked up.

I have an old Mac top box that works like that.

KRL's are made like that and taking a guess I would think epiq are the same way. I have seen oler Macs like that too, but I don't know if they still do it that way.

Hey everyone.
I'm new to the site, and still new to the trade. 19 years old and I have 6 more months until I finish my course, followed by 3 years of apprenticeship...etc. You all know the drill. ;)

Anyways! I found myself a very nice KR537/557 combo bought in 1986 (It's 26 years old from what the guy told me!!!) for $275. I think it's a steal, the man is recently retired and moving onto carpentry as a pastime, so I got a great deal on it! (No tools included) :(

It's a little rusted underneath, as well as it having a few rust spots on the sides, and the casters are a tad bit seized, but hey, everything can be fixed, right? At the end of my school year, my father and I are going to completely restore it to its former glory. The whole sha-bang, and a new metallic paint job to go with it.

I'll make it last another 26 years at least. ;)

Welcome, slayer!

Great box and congrats to getting a solid box for little money. Much better to spend the money on tools than on the box ;)

Hate to say it on your first post, but for 275, you deserve a "You ****" LOL..
In all seriousness though, welcome to the forum and it is a good deal for a nice box.

This was the display model I looked at a few times, it's these welds that make me nervous. they look like they'd crack under weight/stress.

Wow.... those are some halfassed looking welds. Now i'm certainly no expert on toolbox manufacturing, but that looks realllly cheap and substandard.

This is my new setup. Snappy reposessed the top/bottom this summer, got a pretty good deal. 40th Anniversary Mustang KRL791/722. I traded in my KRA2104/2106 towards the side locker KRL712. Ive added quite a bit of Snap-on since my original post but I still have a long list of tools. So on to filling it up!

i've had one of those kobalts for 3-4 years and its pretty much topped off full and no issues yet. i will put a disclaimer that its just a weekender box and not slammed in and out of all day at a shop so results may vary
