never mind the cases, those are some of the most disgustingly dirty tools I've ever seen, to me it reflects on pride in one's work...

The man makes money by using those tools, not by cleaning them. He's obviously a working man.

Cleanliness (or lack thereof) of tools does not reflect on workmanship.

With that said, that guy has almost no sockets. I wonder what kind of work he does. From the diagnostic equipment in the top drawer, I'd say he's the electrical diag guru tech. Maybe works on heavy equipment, from looking at those big *** black wrenches.

The owner of that nice, new box and the greasy tools (funny) is obviously a professional mechanic and whatever you think about his plastic cases, greasy tools, lack of tools or anything else, it works for him.

And to the owner of that gorgeous blue box; thank you for taking the time to photograph each of the drawers, and upload them in order to share with us. Right on.

Some of you guys must not have ever learned that if you can't say something nice then you shouldn't say anything.

My tools are dirty and used daily every day, I don't always clean them spotless but wipe them down. Ill clean them good for interior work. It in no way reflects his professionalism or ability. A lot of us take pride in our tools and work but as I say this ain't a museum there for making money?

I'm a little hurt lol. I actually cleaned a bit before I snapped pictures

I take a LOT of pride in my work. More so then any other techs I have ever worked with. I wipe the tools off if they are dripping oil before I put them away, I don't get paid to clean them. I get paid for the job they perform. As for all the cases, I wish there was something I could do with them, but I find I can keep them a bit more organized when I can put them back in their place. I don't really care for the little socket stands for all the hex and torx bits. Also, I am constantly moving around in the shop and in the outside bay so I just grab a case and go. There isn't much room in the shop for a roll cart either. I sold one and brought 2 home when I started at my present job. Just my preference. As for the other boxes in there, there's nothing that can be done with them. I work on all types of vehicles, from 18 wheelers to mopeds and everything in between. I have a lot of specialty tools, pullers, pressure testers, etc. (I could name every item in every box if you would like).

The big *** wrenches, sometimes you need em ;) I do all the diagnostic work in the shop, more then most. Besides the verdict and the tech 2, there's also a VW vagcom, toyota techstream and a ford IDS. I stay pretty busy....

In closing, I'm not a "tool polisher". Sorry :D

I just built my garage last year, was lurking a long time to gather ideas. I started creeping this thread because once the concrete is down I am looking to by my first roll cab base.

While looking through the pages of this thread, someplace in the 340-350 page someone posted the exact same top box I have. Never thought I would see another one. My dad gave it to me when I was a kid and he bought a full SO box and outgrew the Craftsman back in the early 80's. The other guy said he got his in the 70's so I dont even know how old it is.

It is too bad they dont make them like this anymore, the stuff I look at in Sears now just doesn't feel the same as this when i open it.

the date code should be stamped on the LH side of the top compartment, at least thats where mine is

I'm not faulting for having all the plastic cases, but in my original post was stating that when you get that locker your box is going to be empty if you put all them in that locker.

soooo.
what what i understnd, if your tools are dirty, then you have no pride in your workmanship....

all it looks like to me is someone has a nice shiney box, (probably newish?) has used their tools, gotten dirty, and put all he tools away where they belong.

i keep a lot of my stuff in their cases, and the most used stuff from those cases where i can get to it fast and easy,
time is money

i'm thinking it's well organized, everything in it's place...
if you think thats bad,
you have no idea.....

yea,
i'm not a tool polisher either

HA! Thanks I never knew that, I just went and looked. I had some liners in there for a long time so I never noticed it. Sure enough stamped Made in the USA 5-74. That is pretty cool, thanks Crewchief.

My tools are dirty and well used. I do try and clean them but when your busy working on cars your tools can wait. Winter here is our slow time so instead of leaving work early or spending hours in the bathroom I spend my time cleaning and organizing my tools and toolbox when I can. More so now that I'm a member on GJ.

Inkncraig, What are the details behind that little red box to the left of the Mac toolbox in your second picture??

It's a snap on SM8211 from 1984 with friction slides.
It was given to me by fellow tech 10 years ago. I use to it store hardware, spark plugs, nik/naks, silicone and pens. You know, all the little things.

Nice box man! I' live not far from Travis, but have never met him. Street Bike Tommy came in our shop one time to get a bike inspected. That was pretty cool!

Now that's one bad *** tool box! I've been a fan of Pastrana since '99 when I watched the X Games and after winning the event he launched himself out of the arena into the San Francisco bay. He just kept raising the insanity bar since then. :rocker:

lol I just bought the bottom on CL the other day, date stamp is the year before the top but close enough. It isn't perfect, has two wrong casters and some dings but for 75 bucks I think I did good?

I need to clean it up and take some pics tomorrow.

I outgrew my MAC MB1000A and decided to upgrade to lista.
I bought one new HS1350 with 16 drawers. For handtool storage, I wanted the square inches versus cubic inches. I also bought three HS1350s from Joe (GJ user motohead extraordinaire). These had a mix of drawer sizes, but I didn't really get to pick since they were scratch-and-dent and were already configured. Ends up, the deeper drawers are very useful.

My old box was over full so everything was stuffed in to maximise storage. With the new boxes I figured I now had plenty of storage space. So I spread things out a little to make it easier to find a specific tool. About a quarter of the drawers I will do foam cutouts. Yeah, it's a big waste of space, but it's nice to easily find tools, and identify missing tools. The other drawers I've been making good use of the dividers. The foam is Walmart camping mat. One drawer uses a little less than half a mat. So that's less than $4 per drawer. Way better than buying "real" tool control foam.
