Over 10 feet of Matco Double and Triple Bay Top and Bottom combo's that set parked side by side for 8 years in the garage. 51 drawers, not counting space under the lids. All drawers 24-1/2" deep(?). Allows 24" extensions and Breaker bars to not have to be set in drawer diagonally.

It was with mixed emotions  I recently horse-traded the Triple Bay away. Just a car hobbiest, and couldn't justify at this point in life having several 1000's of $$$ setting in the garage, when I didn't use it but every couple of months. Spent a few hundred for shelving at Lowe's and loaded up some of the over 100 hand boxes I'd collected years ago during the flea markets/garage sales/pawn shop days. Took over 20 hours working evenings and weekends sorting and condensing the triple bay's stuff into the double bay and the hand boxes, unreal! :yikes:

Oh well, dream one day of having my own shop building, maybe buy another monster box then. :dreamer:

Sorry about the poor pic.

Closed the deal on this today. I had the guy deliver it for me (saving me having to rent a van with a lift). Pictures really don't do it justice. Snap On KRL7002 is about 4-5 years old, but the prior owner took meticulous care of it. Truly as advertised in "like new condition." Even has the handle in the top drawer still wrapped in plastic with the little Snap On nameplates and hardware still sealed in the original plastic bag. Unbelievable the feel and quality of this box compared to my Home Depot Husky box..although the Husky is about 10 years old with ball bearing slides and pretty good quality.

The 30-inch depth and 54-inch width of this box will be ample space for all my needs for many years to come. Not sure what I'll do with my old Husky..but for now I'll keep it. Probably do a good job of storing miscellaneous junk, particularly until I get some wall cabinets installed in the garage.

Like the black, sets off the shiny stuff, too cool.

Gotta love a box with some depth.

Come to think of it, the Matco double bay's handle is still in the plastic under the top cover.

Thats a dirty spray job for sure! Hey for $100 though...Did they just use a cheap spray paint on it? If they did a **** prep job it might just flake right off the better finish under it.

As for slides I had a name stamped on the side of the slides in my Matco box.. and right now it escapes me. However I'd do some searching.. there should be some cheaper alternatives out there.

You could easily remove all the drawer pulls, logo, sliders, lock/tumbler etc and remove the overspary with painter stripper, laquer thinner, etc and repaint the box to like new condition! You might email Waterloo for their paint code # they use if you want to paint it back to the original color and get your local auto painter jobber to mix the code in high quality automotive paint. Heck, $100 is so cheap.... its worth fixing or if you don't care about the paint, just replace sliders as needed (look on sliders see if there are OEM part #'s or brand names to see if you can get them cheaper, I seriously doubt it though) and remove the blue off of the drawer pulls/logo (order a new logo if its plastic). I've seen boxes redone that look new but just like painting a car, takes time, money and good prep/spray work... good luck/keep us posted on your restoration!

New guy here....

Harbor Freight special... Plus Kobalt.

toolbox002.jpg

Between Dad and I, we have too many tools for just the standard toolbox... Need to get a intermediate 4 or 5 drawer too.

Oh MAK, where did you get the magnet shelfs? Been looking for days and no one has them.

I always wondered how the Harbor freight special was, when I see the price, is it junk, or decent, not going to buy one, but was wondering:bounce:

I got this box for $600 from someone whom needed money BADLY and wanted to sell.

It needed a bunch of body work, but this was the only way that I could afford to get into a bigger box than what I had.

That was when I first started to prep it.

Then I shot it in Nissan Taupe:

And finally I made a Stainless Steel top for it out of 16 gauge Brushed.

Ohh, Man! Awesome job! A couple of guys at the body shop that I worked at did the same thing; I couldn't tell the difference from new and yours.... well, how cool is it to pick your own unique color? It looks awesome and looks even better because it is your own color of choice! Great Job! Did you get new door pulls to set it off nicely? I'm curios how you made the stainless steel top! Stock SS tops from Snap-On are insanely expensive; did you save allot of dough? :)

Very nice job. I would normally prefer an "original" color, but that looks very attractive.

why would a tool box need body work ? if the drawers and locks work no problem
my box has plenty of war wounds
Some of us are ****. I plan on stripping, epoxy priming, and doing bodywork on my old SO box. I'm also still considering retrofitting ball-bearing slides. It raises the value of your box and looks nice in your shop. I'm not very hard on my tools or box so "war wounds" aren't a huge attraction for me. After using tools frequently and keeping them in nice shape, "war wounds" usually means abuse to me. I can't say that I've never abused my tools, but I avoid it if possible.

Can anyone tell me what model of Matco box that I have? I know that when I got it, the box had a sticker on it that said "Predator" or "Raptor" or something like that.

And yes, I did all of the body work because I wanted a pristine tool box; I just could not afford one at like new prices or at new prices. A little hard work, patience...

You might as well ask why we paint the old pieces of junk we tinker on. Or why we don't crush that junky 62 corvair.

We do because we wanna! He now has a custom box, every one will know it is his box. Sometimes it is just fun to be different.

Adam McLaughlin - I think it looks awesome and say very well done. I'm sure you will inspire many.

If some one has to ask why I'm not sure there is any way to explain.

Thanks guys! My sister thinks that I have too much time on my hands, but I'm glad that you guys appreciate a weekend worth of work. It's completely filled with eBay truck brands too.

Now what to do about a matching top box... Hum...

Some people prefer to look "professional". If I went to a mechanic and their box was beat to ****, I would get back in my vehicle and go to the next shop (and have). If they can't even take care of their money maker, why in the hell would they take care of my vehicle? There's no reason for a box to get beat up, other than being careless.

Most people have seen pictures of my box, and I get complimented on it weekly by people that make more in a week than I will in a lifetime. Every one of them says it's nice to see a box that's taken care of in front of their plane, rather than some of the other beat up ones.

People at work have been told to get new boxes for this very reason.

I think that box looks great, and the work done on it is excellent. I'm a fan of original boxes. If I knew nothing of two mechanics and saw one with a box with "war wounds", and one like adam's, adam would have my business guaranteed. It's obvious he takes pride in what he does.
